[Significance of hereditary thrombophilia for risk of thrombosis with oral contraceptives].

Oral contraceptives increase the natural incidence of venous thromboses of 1-2/10,000 women per year 3-to 4fold. Recent investigations have shown that during intake of desogestrel or gestodene containing formulations the risk is twice that with older low-dose ovulation inhibitors. This difference is larger in first time users than in women who had previously used an oral contraceptive. During pregnancy, the incidence of thromboses rises up to 10/10,000 women-years and post partum up to 40/10,000 women-years. In about 60 % of thromboses no causal explanation can be found. It is suggested that i

Added benefits of drospirenone for compliance.

Drospirenone is a novel progestogen that possesses antimineralocorticoid activity. This activity is seen clinically in its effects on physiological parameters, body weight, general well-being and fluid-related symptoms. Clinical studies with an oral contraceptive containing 30 microg ethinylestradiol and 3 mg drospirenone (Yasmin, Schering AG, Berlin, Germany) and a new continuous combined oral hormone replacement therapy (HRT) containing 1 mg 17beta-estradiol and 2 mg drospirenone (Angeliq, Schering AG) were all designed specifically to evaluate treatment effects on body weight and cardiovasc

Effects of low-dose oral contraceptives on female whole saliva.

The composition and flow rate of paraffin-stimulated whole saliva were analysed in 22 women, of whom 11 used oral contraceptives and 11 did not. Ten men served as the controls. The salivary samples were collected during one month (oral contraceptive users and men), or during one menstrual cycle (non-users). The saliva analyses included flow rate, pH, buffer effect, sialic acid, thiocyanate, peroxidase, lysozyme, amylase, immunoglobulins A, G and M, total protein, mutans streptococci, lactobacilli, yeasts and total numbers of aerobic bacteria. The salivary buffer effect of oral contraceptive us

Prolonged use of the etonogestrel implant and levonorgestrel intrauterine device: 2 years beyond Food and Drug Administration-approved duration.

BACKGROUND: The subdermal contraceptive implant and the 52-mg levonorgestrel intrauterine device are currently Food and Drug Administration approved for 3 and 5 years of use, respectively. Limited available data suggested both of these methods are effective beyond that time. Demonstration of prolonged effectiveness will improve the cost-effectiveness of the device, and potentially patient continuation and satisfaction. OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the effectiveness of the contraceptive implant and the 52-mg hormonal intrauterine device in women using the method for 2 years beyond the curr

Weight change at 12 months in users of three progestin-only contraceptive methods.

BACKGROUND: Concerns about weight gain may influence contraceptive use. We compared the change in body weight over the first 12 months of use between women using the etonogestrel (ENG) implant, the levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) or depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) with women using the copper intrauterine device (IUD). STUDY DESIGN: This was a substudy of the Contraceptive CHOICE Project, a prospective cohort study of 9256 women provided no-cost contraception. Women who had been using the ENG implant, LNG-IUS, DMPA or copper IUD continuously for at least 11 months were el

Can extracorporeal magnetic innervation be a treatment modality for primary dysmenorrhea?

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To evaluate the efficacy of extracorporeal magnetic innervation (ExMI) as a treatment for primary dysmenorrhea compared with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and combined oral contraceptives (COCs). METHODS: The cases were randomized into three groups (NSAID = 51, ExMI = 53, COC = 54). ExMI was applied for a total of 10 sessions. Women in the NSAID group used an oral NSAID at the start of each menstruation. Women in the COC group were given combined pills. Of the treatment options, ExMI was applied for only a single period, whereas NSAID and COC use continued for

Recent combined hormonal contraceptives (CHCs) and the risk of thromboembolism and other cardiovascular events in new users.

BACKGROUND: Combined hormonal contraceptives (CHCs) place women at increased risk of venous thromboembolic events (VTEs) and arterial thrombotic events (ATEs), including acute myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke. There is concern that three recent CHC preparations [drospirenone-containing pills (DRSPs), the norelgestromin-containing transdermal patch (NGMN) and the etonogestrel vaginal ring (ETON)] may place women at even higher risk of thrombosis than other older low-dose CHCs with a known safety profile. STUDY DESIGN: All VTEs and all hospitalized ATEs were identified in women, ages 1

Metabolic effects of the contraceptive skin patch and subdermal contraceptive implant in Mexican women: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: The contraceptive skin patch (CSP) accepted by the U.S. FDA in 2001 includes ethinylestradiol and norelgestromine, whereas the subdermal contraceptive implant (SCI) has etonogestrel and is also approved by the FDA. In Mexico, both are now widely used for contraception but their effects on Mexican population are unknown. The objective of the study was to evaluate if these treatments induce metabolic changes in a sample of indigenous and mestizo Mexican women. METHODS: An observational, prospective, longitudinal, non-randomized study of women between 18 and 35 years of age assigned
