[Anaphylaxis secondary to prick-to-prick tests to foods and its risk factors].

The diagnosis of food allergy requires a proper anamnesis and diagnostic testing with skin prick tests with fresh foods and/or standardized allergen, or specific IgE tests. The risk of systemic reactions is of 15-23 per 100,000 skin tests performed by prick method, specifically anaphylaxis at 0.02%. This paper reports the case of four patients, who while performing prick to prick test with fresh food presented anaphylactic reaction. Implicated foods were fruits of the Rosaceae, Anacardiaceae and Caricaceae families. The severity of anaphylaxis was: two patients with grade 4, one patient grade

Drug allergy in mast cell disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Mastocytosis in adults is associated with a history of anaphylaxis in 22-49%. In addition, monoclonal mast cell activation syndrome has been described presenting with anaphylaxis, especially in patients with hymenoptera venom anaphylaxis. Data on patients with drug hypersensitivity and mast cell diseases are scarce. RECENT FINDINGS: Drugs are elicitors of anaphylaxis in patients with mastocytosis. Drug hypersensitivity is only seldom described as associated with undetected mast cell disease in the literature. Together with a single-centred retrospective study, this data sug

Symbiotic bacteria protect wasp larvae from fungal infestation.

Symbiotic associations between different organisms are of great importance for evolutionary and ecological processes [1-4]. Bacteria are particularly valuable symbiotic partners owing to their huge diversity of biochemical pathways that may open entirely new ecological niches for higher organisms [1-3]. Here, we report on a unique association between a new Streptomyces species and a solitary hunting wasp, the European beewolf (Philanthus triangulum, Hymenoptera, Crabronidae). Beewolf females cultivate the Streptomyces bacteria in specialized antennal glands and apply them to the brood cell pri

A patient with severe black fly (Simuliidae) hypersensitivity referred for evaluation of suspected immunodeficiency.

BACKGROUND: Biting flies of the Diptera order and specifically the black fly (Simuliidae family) can be rare causes of severe hypersensitivity reactions. OBJECTIVE: To describe a patient referred for evaluation of immunodeficiency whose clinical course is explained by severe Simuliidae hypersensitivity. METHODS: The patient's immune system was investigated using standard laboratory evaluations. Hypersensitivity to Simuliidae was pursued because of historical features of her presentation and was specifically examined by skin prick and intradermal testing with whole body extract. RESULTS: The

Cytotoxicity of pilosulin 1, a peptide from the venom of the jumper ant Myrmecia pilosula.

The synthetic peptide pilosulin 1, corresponding to the largest defined allergenic polypeptide found in the venom of the jumper ant Myrmecia pilosula, inhibited the incorporation of [methyl-3H]thymidine into proliferating Epstein-Barr transformed (EBV) B-cells. The LD50 was four-fold lower in concentration than melittin, a cytotoxic peptide found in honey bee venom. Loss of cell viability was assessed by flow cytometry by measuring the proportion of cells that fluoresced in the presence of the fluorescent dye 7-aminoactinomycin D. Examination of proliferating EBV B-cells indicated that the cel

[The so-called "idiopathic" anaphylaxis: allergic and pseudo-allergic reactions].

The anaphylaxis that is called idiopathic (A.I.) forms less than 1% of the publications that are concerned with anaphylaxis. The clinical picture associates all the symptoms of anaphylaxis, with particular frequency of Quincke's laryngeal oedema. A vital risk is supposed. No abnormal biological factor can be found. There is an associated, variable pathology in 20% of subjects, 58% are atopic. A.I. effects women more--69%. Quincke's hereditary angioneurotic oedema, the carcinoid syndrome, and the capillary hyperpermeability syndrome, paroxysm with monoclonal gammopathy, systemic mastocytosis mu

Triploid bumblebees indicate a direct cost of inbreeding in fragmented populations.

Hymenopteran species with single-locus complimentary sex-determination (sl-CSD) face an additional cost of inbreeding because of a loss of diversity at the sex-determining locus. Laboratory studies of a range of Hymenoptera have found that a small percentage of diploid males produce viable diploid sperm, and that if these males mate, then the resultant females produce triploid offspring that are sterile. Here, we use microsatellite markers to determine the frequency of triploid individuals of Bombus muscorum and B. jonellus in a model island system. Triploids were found in populations of both

Allergic myocardial infarction.

In the literature there are very few well-documented cases of myocardial ischemia with pathomechanism accompanying allergic reaction. It is defined as Kounis syndrome, i.e. angina pectoris or infarction with allergic etiology. It is suggested, that few few cases of myocardial ischemia after a Hymenoptera sting reported thus far represent only a minute percentage of the total number of allergic reactions which occur in the circulatory system. It is difficult to make a credible decision whether allergic mechanisms are responsible for a greater number of deaths than we suspect. In the light of th

Allergy to bumblebees.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Field stings by bumblebees are uncommon because of the habitat and nonaggressiveness of these insects. More stings have been reported in the Netherlands because of the increasing use of bumblebees in flowering industries such as tomato growing. The purpose of this review is to summarize the recent literature concerning bumblebee anaphylaxis and describe our own experience with immunotherapy in an occupational group of bumblebee-venom-allergic workers. RECENT FINDINGS: Two distinct categories of patients are sensitized to bumblebee venom. First are patients with IgE highly c

Shallot aphids, Myzus ascalonicus, in strawberry: biocontrol potential of three predators and three parasitoids.

The parasitization capacity of 3 parasitoids and the predation capacity of 3 predators towards the shallot aphid, Myzus ascalonicus Doncaster (Homoptera: Aphididae), on strawberry, Fragaria x ananassa Duchesne (Rosales: Rosaceae) cv. Honeoye, were examined in laboratory experiments. In Petri dish assays, both Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) and A. ervi Haliday readily stung shallot aphids, with no significant difference in stinging frequency between the two species. A. ervi induced a significantly higher mortality (79.0 ± 7.2%) in terms of stung aphids compared with A. cole

Genetic variability among native and introduced strains of the parasitic nematode Deladenus siricidicola.

Sirex noctilio is an invasive Eurasian woodwasp that can kill pine (Pinus spp.) trees and has been introduced to areas of the Southern Hemisphere where plantations of introduced pines are grown. The main method of control of this invasive pest has been introduction and augmentation of a parasitic nematode, Deladenus siricidicola. The strain of D. siricidicola used for biological control of S. noctilio in the Southern Hemisphere originated in Sopron, Hungary. The genotype of D. siricidicola used for biological control sterilizes females of the strain of S. noctilio present in Australia. However

Pollination and floral ecology of Arundina graminifolia (Orchidaceae) at the northern border of the species' natural distribution.

Arundina graminifolia is an early successional plant on Iriomote Island, the Ryukyus, Japan, where it is endangered. Populations flower for more than half a year, and many inflorescences bloom for one to several months. The nectarless gullet flowers, which open for up to six days, are self-compatible but cannot self-pollinate spontaneously; thus they rely on pollinating agents for capsule production. Field observations at two habitats identified at least six species of bees and wasps, primarily mate-seeking males of Megachile yaeyamaensis and Thyreus takaonis, as legitimate pollinators. Thus,

Manipulation of the phenolic chemistry of willows by gall-inducing sawflies.

The ability to induce galls on plants has evolved independently in many insect orders, but the adaptive significance and evolutionary consequences of gall induction are still largely unknown. We studied these questions by analyzing the concentrations of various plant defense compounds in willow leaves and sawfly galls. We found that the galls are probably nutritionally beneficial for the sawfly larvae, because the concentrations of most defensive phenolics are substantially lower in gall interiors than in leaves. More importantly, changes in chemistry occur in a similar coordinated pattern in

Multiple hornet stings with features of Reye's syndrome.

Hornet's venom is known to possess a variety of toxic effects. A 19-mo-old girl who developed a Reye-like syndrome following multiple stings by the Oriental hornet (Vespa orientalis) is described. She presented with encephalopathy associated with hepatomegaly, elevated transaminase levels, low prothrombin time, and hyperammonemia. Liver biopsy demonstrated microvesicular fatty infiltration and diffuse mitochondrial changes. Additional features were acute renal tubular necrosis and massive hemolysis.

Anaphylaxis and insect allergy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Anaphylaxis is an acute-onset and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that can be caused by numerous allergic triggers including stinging insects. This review focuses on recent advances, natural history, risk factors and therapeutic considerations. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent work suggests that concerns over insect allergy diagnosis continue to exist. This is especially true with individuals who have a convincing history of a serious life-threatening anaphylactic event, but lack the necessary diagnostic criteria of venom-specific IgE by skin test or in-vitro diagnost

Definition of Competencies for Allergology Specialty/Subspecialty Training in Mast Cell Disorders in Europe: An EAACI Position Paper.

Mast cell disorders (MCD), including mastocytosis and mast cell (MC) activation syndrome (MCAS), encompass a heterogeneous spectrum of diseases often presenting with debilitating manifestations. Variable clinical manifestations, ranging from otherwise asymptomatic cutaneous forms to recurrent anaphylaxis, pose significant challenges for timely diagnosis and effective management. Despite increasing recognition of MCD in Europe, diagnosis is frequently delayed, and therapeutic approaches remain inconsistent, potentially due to gaps and disparities in training. An European Academy of Allergy and

A postmeiotically bifurcated roadmap of honeybee spermatogenesis marked by phylogenetically restricted genes.

Haploid males of hymenopteran species produce gametes through an abortive meiosis I followed by meiosis II that can either be symmetric or asymmetric in different species. Thus, one spermatocyte could give rise to two spermatids with either equal or unequal amounts of cytoplasm. It is currently unknown what molecular features accompany these postmeiotic sperm cells especially in species with asymmetric meiosis II such as bees. Here we present testis single-cell RNA sequencing datasets from the honeybee (Apis mellifera) drones of 3 and 14 days after emergence (3d and 14d). We show that, while 3

Rare and Hungry: Feeding Ecology of the Golden Alpine Salamander, an Endangered Amphibian in the Alps.

Amphibians are considered critical species in the nutrient flow within and across ecosystems, and knowledge on their trophic ecology and niches is crucial for their conservation. For the first time we studied the trophic ecology of the rare and endemic Salamandra atra aurorae in a mixed temperate forest in northern Italy. We aimed to define the realized trophic niche, investigate the prey selectivity and explore possible levels of individual specialization. In summer 2022 we obtained stomach contents from 53 salamanders by stomach flushing and prey availability using pitfall traps. We used the
