A dynamical systems model of emotional contagion: Oscillatory coupling in the circumplex of affect.

BACKGROUND: Emotional contagion plays a crucial role in shaping group dynamics, interpersonal relationships, and affective regulation. Mathematical models of affect and agent-based models of emotional contagion are well established, but fewer formulations combine a continuous valence-arousal representation, explicit multi-agent coupling, time-continuous interaction dynamics, and mechanically interpretable dynamical parameters within a single framework. OBJECTIVE: This study develops a mathematical and computational model of emotional contagion that integrates intra-individual affective dynami

Excess weight gain prevention in adolescents: Three-year outcome following a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) prevents weight gain in adults with obesity and binge-eating-disorder, and is especially effective among those with increased psychosocial problems. However, IPT was not superior to health education (HE) to prevent excess weight gain at 1-year follow-up in 113 adolescent girls at high-risk for excess weight gain because of loss-of-control eating and high body mass index (BMI; kg/m2; Tanofsky-Kraff et al., 2014). METHOD: Participants from the original trial were recontacted 3 years later for assessment. At baseline, adolescent- and parent-reported s

[Crime prevention in high-functioning pervasive developmental disorders with paraphilia].

Paraphilia refers to occasional concomitant disorders of pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). When a restricted interest of PDD is focused on a sexual object, paraphilia may be develop as a problematic symptom. However, having this concomitant disorder does not always result in criminal behavior. When the social interactivity of a particular patient with PDD is severely impaired, paraphilia could lead to a sex crime. Because pedophilia targets sacrifice innocent and defenseless children, it is critical to prevent such sex crimes by understanding the psychopathology of PDD with paraphilia, e

Group therapy as a social context for aphasia recovery: a pilot, observational study in an acute rehabilitation hospital.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with aphasia often receive therapy from a speech-language pathologist during acute rehabilitation. The literature demonstrates that group-based therapy provides a natural, social environment for language rehabilitation in mild-moderate and/or chronic aphasia; however, the communication of persons with acute, severe non-fluent aphasia during group treatment has not been fully explored. OBJECTIVE: This observational study investigated patient communication during acute rehabilitation. The primary objective was to determine whether participants initiate more communication

Group training in interpersonal problem-solving skills for workplace adaptation of adolescents and adults with Asperger syndrome: a preliminary study.

Adults with Asperger syndrome show persistent difficulties in social situations which psychosocial treatments may address. Despite the multiple studies focusing on social skills interventions, only some have focused specifically on problem-solving skills and have not targeted workplace adaptation training in the adult population. This study describes preliminary data from a group format manual-based intervention, the Interpersonal Problem-Solving for Workplace Adaptation Programme, aimed at improving the cognitive and metacognitive process of social problem-solving skills focusing on typical s

Negotiation of identity in group therapy for aphasia: the Aphasia Café.

BACKGROUND: There has been increasing interest in ensuring that aphasia intervention includes attention to the negotiation of a robust identity after the life-altering changes that often accompany the onset of aphasia. But how does one go about simultaneously improving communication and positive identity development within aphasia therapy? Socially oriented group therapy for aphasia has been touted as one means of addressing both psychosocial and communicative goals in aphasia. AIMS: This article describes the results of a sociolinguistic analysis of group therapy for aphasia in which positiv

Change in interpersonal problems after cognitive agoraphobia and schema-focused therapy versus psychodynamic treatment as usual of inpatients with agoraphobia and Cluster C personality disorders.

The aim was to study whether patients with panic disorder with agoraphobia and co-occurring Cluster C traits would respond differently regarding change in interpersonal problems as part of their personality functioning when receiving two different treatment modalities. Two cohorts of patients were followed through three months' in-patient treatment programs and assessed at follow-up one year after end of treatment. The one cohort comprised 18 patients treated with "treatment as usual" according to psychodynamic principles, the second comprised 24 patients treated in a cognitive agoraphobia and

When the present visits the past: updating traumatic memories in social phobia.

Research suggests that distorted images of the self are common in social phobia and play a role in maintaining the disorder. The images are often linked in thematic and sensory detail to distressing memories that are clustered around the onset or worsening of the disorder. This has led to speculation about the likely benefit of working directly with these memories to improve symptoms of social phobia. In this exploratory study, we describe a process of cognitive restructuring followed by imagery rescripting to update the meanings of distressing memories and images in social phobia. We first pr

The Social Behavior Inventory for children in a child abuse treatment program: development of a tool to measure interpersonal behavior.

This article presents information about a tool that can be completed in a few minutes to measure the interpersonal behavior of childen particpating in a child abuse treatment program. One sample of children came from the community and had no reported history of abuse or mental health services. A second sample was children obtaining therapy services through a child abuse treatment program. Factor analysis of scores provided by parents for their children obtaining therapy services led to the development of three scales to assess aversive interpersonal behavior, two to measure prosocial interpers

Fluctuation of symptoms and social functioning in panic disorder with or without concomitant depression. A 5-year prospective follow-up.

After controlled treatment with either imipramine or doxepin with additional psychotherapy, 30 patients with pure panic disorder and 20 with concomitant depression were followed under ordinary treatment conditions over a 5-year period. While the overall level of illness severity was mild in both groups (slightly worse in the group with comorbidity), social impairment as well as fluctuation of symptoms were similar in both groups. Therefore, comorbidity of panic disorder and depression does not necessarily imply a poorer outcome in a self-referred patient sample initially treated with psychotro

Infusion of Life: patient perceptions of expressive therapy during chemotherapy sessions.

Through a quanti-qualitative study, we observed the effects of group expressive therapy (ET) sessions on patients' feelings and sense of well-being, as part of the Infusion of Life project. This project is part of a broader programme to improve integral care, developed by an interdisciplinary team headed by a medical doctor who is also an artist and expert in ET. We offered 48 group ET sessions to a total of 253 outpatients with cancer or autoimmune disorders receiving venous infusions in the chemotherapy room of University Hospital Antonio Pedro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. An exploratory study of group therapy for sexually abused adolescents and nonoffending guardians.

Adolescent survivors of sexual abuse frequently report severe trauma, depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. While cognitive-behavioral group interventions show promise, interpreting efficacy is problematic due to commonly high attrition. This article reports promising exploratory study findings relating to a 12-week multimodal abuse-specific group intervention with a nonoffending parent/caregiver component. Participants (aged 11 16 years) consisted of six adolescents with severe abuse histories, and their caregivers. Participants completed pre-, post-, and 1-month follow-up measures. The r

Early maladaptive schemas and adult attachment in a UK clinical population.

OBJECTIVES: Both insecure attachment style and early maladaptive schemas have been associated with mental health difficulties. This study aimed to investigate how schemas relate to attachment style classification in mental health service users. A further aim was to investigate the nature of the relationship between psychological distress, common psychological difficulties, and attachment style. METHOD: Participants were 72 people in contact with mental health services who completed the short form of Young's schema questionnaire, a measure identifying their attachment style (experience of clos
