BACKGROUND: Metalworkers are exposed to a variety of contact allergens by handling tools, metals, metalworking fluids (MWFs), oils and greases, rubber materials, and so on. Most large-scale reports on contact allergy due to MWFs are more than 10-years-old, and there are only few studies on contact allergy in mechanics and other metal workers not exposed to MWFs.

OBJECTIVES: This prospective study aimed to investigate the quality of life of workers in a steel factory.
METHODS: The study group was composed of 16 male workers with tinnitus and 30 ears. Fifteen male workers without tinnitus and 30 ears were included into the control group. Workers were evaluated by questionnaire, pure-tone audiometry, and the SF-36 Health Survey. In the study group, tinnitus loudness levels (TLLs) were found.
RESULTS: In the study group, the domains general mental health and role limitations owing to emotional problems were significantly lower than in the control group.

AIM: To investigate the incidences and trends of occupational skin diseases (OSDs) and allergic respiratory diseases (ARDs) in machinists working in the fabrication of metal products.

A retrospective study of the epidemiology of occupational skin disease among metal workers showed that irritant contact dermatitis (75%) prevailed over allergic contact dermatitis. Most workers belonged to the age group 20 to 29 years. There was a slight preponderance of Malays and Indians compared to the working population of Singapore. Most presented for treatment within 10 days of their dermatitis. Ninety-five percent presented with dermatitis on the hands and arms. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of atopy between workers with irritant and allergic contact dermatitis.

The mineral-based sorbents Filtra P, Polonite, natural wollastonite and water-cooled blast furnace slag (WCBFS) were studied in terms of their PO(4) removal performance.
