Duration of the unconditioned stimulus in appetitive conditioning of honeybees differentially impacts learning, long-term memory strength, and the underlying protein synthesis.

This study examines the role of stimulus duration in learning and memory formation of honeybees (Apis mellifera). In classical appetitive conditioning honeybees learn the association between an initially neutral, conditioned stimulus (CS) and the occurrence of a meaningful stimulus, the unconditioned stimulus (US). Thereby the CS becomes a predictor for the US eliciting a conditioned response (CR). Here we study the role of US duration in classical conditioning by examining honeybees conditioned with different US durations. We quantify the CR during acquisition, memory retention, and extinctio

Small effects of olfactory identification and discrimination on global cognitive and executive performance over 1 year in aging people without a history of age-related cognitive impairment.

Olfactory and cognitive performance share neural correlates profoundly affected by physiological aging. However, whether odor identification and discrimination scores predict global cognitive status and executive function in healthy older people with intact cognition is unclear. Therefore, in the present study, we set out to elucidate these links in a convenience sample of 204 independently living, cognitively intact healthy Czech adults aged 77.4 ± 8.7 (61-97 years) over two waves of data collection (one-year interval). We used the Czech versions of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) to

Impact of recurrent head trauma on olfactory function in boxers: a matched pairs analysis.

Recently, interest in the health of boxers has been raised by a petition of the British Medical Association to restrict boxing. However, scientific data on permanent damage are rare and typical localisations of injuries were yet to be defined. The aim of this study was to determine whether there are changes in the sense of smell in people undergoing recurrent head traumas. The hypothesis to be tested was if boxers had a reduced olfactory function. We used a matched pairs analysis design. Fifty healthy, male athletes underwent subjective olfactometry using Sniffin'Sticks testing (including thre

Natural extracts from grape seed and stem by-products in combination with colloidal silver as alternative preservatives to SO2 for white wines: Effects on chemical composition and sensorial properties.

The search for alternative additives to sulfur dioxide, with antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, in the production of wines is one of the current objectives of the enological industry. In the present study, aqueous extracts obtained from winery byproducts (grape seeds and stems), alone or in combination with colloidal silver complex, have been used in white vinification. The antimicrobial effect of the extracts was similar to that of sulfur dioxide, being more effective on lactic and acetic bacteria in those wines to which colloidal silver was added. The effect on the color, the phenolic c

Discrimination of Pairs of Chemosensory Stimuli in Relation to Respiration.

OBJECTIVE: Are paired chemosensory stimuli with very short interstimulus-intervals (ISIs) more often perceived as distinct events when delivered synchronously with inspiration than when delivered asynchronously? METHODS: Twin stimuli (H2S, phenylethyl alcohol [PEA], CO2) were repeatedly administered intranasally to 40 participants using a constant-flow olfactometer, synchronized with inspiration, at varying ISIs. In the first part of the study, participants indicated whether they perceived one or two stimuli. In the second part, event-related potentials (CSERP) were recorded from 20 participa

Phthalate exposure to adult mice alters non-coding RNAs in cauda epididymosomes.

We have previously reported associations between urinary biomarkers of anti-androgenic phthalates and small non-coding RNA (sncRNA) compositions of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in seminal plasma of men undergoing fertility treatment. To complement these findings, we assessed sncRNAs of cauda epididymosomes in mice after exposure to the anti-androgenic phthalates, Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), and their mixture. Male mice were exposed to 2.5 mg/kg/day of DBP or DEHP and their mixture (2.5 mg/kg/day each of DBP and DEHP) for six weeks. Cauda epididymosomal RNA w

Olfaction Recovery following Dupilumab Is Independent of Nasal Polyp Reduction in CRSwNP.

Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a chronic type 2 inflammatory disease characterized by olfactory impairment (OI) as one of the most troublesome symptoms. Currently, biologics represent a new option in the treatment of uncontrolled type 2 CRSwNP. This is a retrospective real-life observational study involving adult patients affected by severe uncontrolled CRSwNP. At baseline, and 3 and 6 months after Dupilumab add on to intranasal steroids (INS), patients underwent the 22-item Sinonasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22), nasal endoscopy, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scale for OI, and S

Mapping GPR88-Venus illuminates a novel role for GPR88 in sensory processing.

GPR88 is an orphan G-protein coupled receptor originally characterized as a striatal-enriched transcript and is a potential target for neuropsychiatric disorders. At present, gene knockout studies in the mouse have essentially focused on striatal-related functions and a comprehensive knowledge of GPR88 protein distribution and function in the brain is still lacking. Here, we first created Gpr88-Venus knock-in mice expressing a functional fluorescent receptor to fine-map GPR88 localization in the brain. The receptor protein was detected in neuronal soma, fibers and primary cilia depending on th

Capgras' syndrome in first-episode psychotic disorders.

BACKGROUND: Misidentification phenomena, including the delusion of 'imposters' named after Joseph Capgras, occur in various major psychiatric and neurological disorders but have rarely been studied systematically in broad samples of modern patients. This study investigated the prevalence and correlated clinical factors of Capgras' phenomenon in a broad sample of patient-subjects with first-lifetime episodes of psychotic affective and nonaffective disorders. METHODS: We evaluated 517 initially hospitalized, first-episode psychotic-disorder patients for the prevalence of Capgras' phenomenon and

Genome analysis and signature discovery for diving and sensory properties of the endangered Chinese alligator.

Crocodilians are diving reptiles that can hold their breath under water for long periods of time and are crepuscular animals with excellent sensory abilities. They comprise a sister lineage of birds and have no sex chromosome. Here we report the genome sequence of the endangered Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis) and describe its unique features. The next-generation sequencing generated 314 Gb of raw sequence, yielding a genome size of 2.3 Gb. A total of 22 200 genes were predicted in Alligator sinensis using a de novo, homology- and RNA-based combined model. The genetic basis of long-divi

[Context influence on the perception of dysphonia: when the knowledge of the patient's clinical state can modify the results of perceptual voice quality assessment].

Two experiments were conducted to examine how knowledge of the patient's clinical state affects the results of perceptual voice quality assessment performed by specialists in voice therapy. This study involved 53 patients with a dysphonia. For each speaker, we selected a pair of recordings made in different circumstances. These pairs of voices were presented to seven listeners (ENT surgeons or speech therapists). The task was to perceptually compare the severity of the dysphonia between the 2 recordings of the pair. Stimuli were presented first in a blind test, then several weeks later with ac

Subjective assessment of sensory function and oral function decline in older adults.

Sensory decline in older adults significantly affects quality of life and contributes to cognitive decline, depression, falls, and injuries. Although several studies exist in this area, most were focused on individual senses, with few being conducted on comprehensive assessments of all five senses. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between subjective sensory assessment and oral function, to developing health strategies. This study was conducted as part of the Mima-SONGS Study for examining relationships between oral, cognitive, and physical functions, social factors, nu

Does the Prefrontal Cortex Play an Essential Role in Consciousness? Insights from Intracranial Electrical Stimulation of the Human Brain.

A central debate in philosophy and neuroscience pertains to whether PFC activity plays an essential role in the neural basis of consciousness. Neuroimaging and electrophysiology studies have revealed that the contents of conscious perceptual experience can be successfully decoded from PFC activity, but these findings might be confounded by postperceptual cognitive processes, such as thinking, reasoning, and decision-making, that are not necessary for consciousness. To clarify the involvement of the PFC in consciousness, we present a synthesis of research that has used intracranial electrical s

A semi-quantitative sport-specific assessment of recurrent traumatic brain injury: the TraQ questionnaire and its application in American football.

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is very frequent and studied among contact sport players, above all American Football. Now, the defined diagnosis is only post-mortem and, consequently, more detailed diagnostic in-vivo instruments are needed to facilitate diagnosis and to allow a follow up. This clinical questionnaire (Trauma Questionnaire-TraQ) has been designed to investigate in parallel the traumatic load and clinical and cognitive subjective symptoms. It evaluates 4 anamnestic fields (specific sport activity, all previous pathological events, clinical manifestations compatible with T

Olfactory deficits decrease the time resolution for trigeminal lateralization.

OBJECTIVES: To date the temporal resolution of the detection of almost simultaneously applied intranasal trigeminal stimuli is unknown. The aim of our study was to examine this temporal resolution in an/hyposmic subjects, who are known to have reduced trigeminal sensitivity and compare it with healthy controls. METHODS: Participants were 20 posttraumatic an/hyposmic patients, and 23 healthy controls (matched with regard to sex and age). Olfactory function was tested psychophysically using the Sniffin´ Sticks test battery. Bilateral trigeminal stimulation was carried out using a birhinal high-

Monogenic heritable autism gene neuroligin impacts Drosophila social behaviour.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterized by deficits in social interactions, language development and repetitive behaviours. Multiple genes involved in the formation, specification and maintenance of synapses have been identified as risk factors for ASDs development. Among these are the neuroligin genes which code for postsynaptic cell adhesion molecules that induce the formation of presynapses, promote their maturation and modulate synaptic functions in both vertebrates and invertebrates. Neuroligin-deficient mice display abnormal social and vocal behaviours that resemble ASDs sympt

The fiber connections of the temporal lobe with emphasis on the rhesus monkey.

The temporal lobe has three functionally distinct areas which have minimal interconnections within the lobe, but extensive connections with other parts of the brain. The superior temporal gyrus contains primary and association auditory areas. Inferotemporal cortex is exclusively a visual association area. The temporal pole is involved in social behavior. In addition, the superior temporal sulcus functions as a sensory integration area. From a review of the literature, a schema is proposed for organizing the reciprocal connections of the three functional areas into a series of loops which follo
