Concept, study design, and baseline nighttime blood pressure control status of the WISDOM-Night Study using a wrist-type oscillometric home blood pressure monitoring device.

There is growing evidence that nocturnal hypertension is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure. However, brachial blood pressure (BP) measurements during sleep might themselves disturb sleep quality. We initiated a nationwide, multicenter observational prospective study using a wrist-type oscillometric nighttime BP monitoring device with new algorithms to measure supine BP accurately without sleep disturbance. This study, named the Wrist ICT-based Sleep and Circadian Blood Pressure Monitoring Program-Night BP Study (WISDOM-Night Study), was designed to

Dynamical behaviors of an Echinococcosis epidemic model with distributed delays.

In this paper, a novel spreading dynamical model for Echinococcosis with distributed time delays is proposed. For the model, we firstly give the basic reproduction number R0 and the existence of a unique endemic equilibrium when R0>1. Furthermore, we analyze the dynamical behaviors of the model. The results show that the dynamical properties of the model is completely determined by R0. That is, if R0< 1, the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable, and if R0>1, the model is permanent and the endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. According to human Echinococc

Coupling of shear-circumferential stress pulses investigation through stress phase angle in FSI models of stenotic artery using experimental data.

Many cardiovascular diseases are closely associated with hemodynamic parameters. The main purpose of this study is mimicking a physiological blood flow in stenotic arteries to provide an understanding of hemodynamic parameters. An experimental setup was designed to produce original pulsatile flow and measure pressure pulse waves through a compliant tube. Moreover, a numerical model considering fluid-solid interaction was developed to investigate wall shear stress and circumferential stress waves, based on the results of the experiments. Results described elevated mean pressure by increasing st

Non-invasive 24 hour ambulatory monitoring of aortic wave reflection and arterial stiffness by a novel oscillometric device: the first feasibility and reproducibility study.

BACKGROUND: Surrogates of aortic wave reflection and arterial stiffness, such as augmentation index (AIx), augmentation pressure, pulse wave velocity (PWV) and pulse pressure amplification (PPampl) are independent predictors of cardiovascular risk. A novel ambulatory, brachial cuff-based oscillometric device has been recently developed and validated, yielding 24-h assessment of the aforementioned parameters (Mobilo-O-Graph). Aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility and reproducibility of wave reflection and arterial stiffness estimation by pulse wave analysis using this device. ME

Analysis of damped oscillations during reentry: a new approach to evaluate cardiac restitution.

Reentry is a mechanism underlying numerous cardiac arrhythmias. During reentry, head-tail interactions of the action potential can cause cycle length (CL) oscillations and affect the stability of reentry. We developed a method based on a difference-delay equation to determine the slopes of the action potential duration and conduction velocity restitution functions, known to be major determinants of reentrant arrhythmogenesis, from the spatial period P and the decay length D of damped CL oscillations. Using this approach, we analyzed CL oscillations after the induction of reentry and the resett

A network of (autonomic) clock outputs.

The circadian clock in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) is composed of thousands of oscillator neurons, each of which is dependent on the cell-autonomous action of a defined set of circadian clock genes. A major question is still how these individual oscillators are organized into a biological clock producing a coherent output that is able to time all the different daily changes in behavior and physiology. We investigated which anatomical connections and neurotransmitters are used by the biological clock to control the daily release pattern of a number of hormones. The picture that emerged sho

Comparison of Dinamap PRO-100 and mercury sphygmomanometer blood pressure measurements in a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: The accuracy of automated oscillometric devices has been questioned. In addition the acceptability of these devices for research under the field conditions is unclear. METHODS: We compared blood pressure (BP) readings obtained using the Dinamap PRO-100 with readings obtained using a standard mercury sphygmomanometer in 305 participants aged 48 to 86 years who were enrolled in the ongoing Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis. The BP was measured three times by each device in random order in each participant. RESULTS: Approximately one half of the participants were male and 46.6%

The origin of the 900 Hz spectral peak in spontaneous and sound-evoked round-window electrical activity.

We have monitored the spectrum of the (spontaneous) neural noise at the round window (RW) and on the surface of the antero-ventral cochlear nucleus (CN) and the dorsal CN (DCN) of anaesthetised guinea pigs. We have also obtained the average gross extracellular waveform evoked by 20 kHz tone-bursts (0.25 ms and 25 ms) at each of these recording sites, and calculated the spectrum of the average waveforms (SAW). With these tone-bursts, only a small population of neurones in the extreme basal turn of the cochlea near the RW electrode responds, presumably with only a single action potential for eac

The mechanism of propagation of intracellular calcium waves in cultured human uterine myocytes.

OBJECTIVE: The primary goal of this work was to determine the relative importance of sarcoplasmic reticulum inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate receptors and ryanodine receptors in the mechanism of intracellular calcium wave propagation in human uterine myocytes. A secondary goal was to identify the rate-determining step of calcium wave propagation. STUDY DESIGN: Pregnant human myometrium was obtained at the time of cesarean delivery, enzymatically dispersed, and cultured through several passages. Intracellular calcium wave velocities were measured with video fluorescence microscopy and the calcium-d

Sensitivity of a simplified forced oscillation technique for detection of upper airway obstruction.

The sensitivity of a simplified variant of forced oscillation technique (FOT) was studied for assessment of dynamic upper airway obstruction during nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) therapy for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). The airway impedance P[FOT] was measured by FOT and the oesophageal pressure (P(oes)) was recorded during stable stage II sleep in 11 patients with OSA. The CPAP level was initially set high enough to completely abolish upper airway obstruction. To induce gradually increasing upper airway re-obstruction, the CPAP pressure was then lowered stepwise. Rapid oscillometric blood pressure measurement compared to conventional oscillometric measurement.

BACKGROUND: There have been few reports studying the necessary interval between blood pressure measurements, after the initial rest period. METHODS: Blood pressure was measured in 50 patients using the conventional oscillometric technique (COT) and the rapid oscillometric technique (ROT). RESULTS: The difference between COT and ROT was -1.1 / -0.1 mmHg, which was not significantly different (p = 0.8 / 1.0) and the pulse difference was -0.8 beats per minute (p = 0.8). CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that a 15-second interval between blood pressure readings is as accurate as a one-minute interva

Muscarinic modulation of a pattern-generating network: control of neuronal properties.

The aim of this article is to investigate the cellular mechanisms underlying cholinergic modulation of the pyloric network in the stomatogastric ganglion (STG) of the Cape lobster Jasus Ialandii. Bath application of the muscarinic agonists muscarine, oxotremorine, and pilocarpine on the STG activates a rhythmic pattern from a quiescent pyloric network. The mechanisms of this modulation were investigated on individual pyloric neurons isolated both from synaptic interactions within the network (by photoinactivation of most of the presynaptic neurons and pharmacological blockade of the remaining

Blood Pressure Estimation Based on the Timing of the Arterial Reflected Waves by Oscillometric Pulse Wave Decomposition.

Recent innovations in oscillometric blood pressure (BP) estimation leveraging pulse transit time (PTT) show promise even when pulse amplitude is compromised. However, current PTT methods often require multiple sensors. This study introduces a novel approach for oscillometric BP estimation utilizing only a single sensor. Our method simplifies PTT measurement through decomposing oscillometric pulses into forward and reflected wave components. Notably, we found that the time interval between the forward and first reflected wave is shortest when cuff pressure is at the systolic level, while the in
