Pubic lice: an endangered species?

UNLABELLED: The incidence of pubic lice infestations is estimated to be between 1.3% and 4.6%, with an average incidence of 2% worldwide. It is also estimated that 70% to 80% of adults now remove pubic hair in part or entirety, using a variety of methods. It is hypothesized that the destruction of this pubic hair habitat may account for the falling incidence of pubic lice and may possibly lead to its eradication or atypical presentation. AIM: To report the changing incidence of pubic lice infestation from our unit over the last 10 years and assess its association, if any, with pubic hair remo

Efficacy of a 1% lambdacyhalothrin cattle Pour-on (Saber) against sucking and biting lice infesting beef cattle.

Four studies were conducted to determine the efficacy of a 1% lambdacyhalothrin pour-on (Saber Pour-on, Schering-Plough Animal Health) for control of sucking lice (Linognathus vituli, Haematopinus eurysternus, Solenopotes capillatus) and biting lice (Damalinia bovis) on beef cattle. Seventy-four mixed-breed cattle naturally infested with one or more species of lice at locations in Wisconsin, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and North Dakota were included in the study. Pretreatment lice samples were taken and identified by genus with the exception that sucking lice were not identified by genus at the North

The neglected saliva: medically important toxins in the saliva of human lice.

Although there has been a great deal of research effort within the last two decades on identifying the active components of the saliva of blood-sucking ticks, mosquitoes, biting flies, fleas and bugs, essentially neglected have been the human lice. Despite initial reports in the early part of this century suggestive of vasodilatory, anticoagulant and immunosuppressive properties of the saliva, for the next 50 years there were no biochemical studies on the active principles. Very recently, anatomical and biochemical studies have begun to characterize the bioactive molecules in lice saliva. The

Ectoparasitic community of the Mahali mole-rat, Cryptomys hottentotus mahali: potential host for vectors of medical importance in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The endemic rodent family of Bathyergidae in Africa, particularly South Africa, are understudied as reservoirs of diseases of significant medical importance. Considering the diversity and wide distribution of African mole-rats in South Africa, many of these bathyergids could act as carriers of zoonoses. METHODS: The present study assessed the ectoparasite community of the Mahali mole-rat (Cryptomys hottentotus mahali). We aimed to identify possible parasitic arthropods that may infest this mole-rat species and explore host preference, contributions of seasonality, host sex and bod

Development of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry for the identification of lice isolated from farm animals.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) is now routinely used for the rapid identification of microorganisms isolated from clinical samples and has been recently successfully applied to the identification of arthropods. In the present study, this proteomics tool was used to identify lice collected from livestock and poultry in Algeria. The MALDI-TOF MS spectra of 408 adult specimens were measured for 14 species, including Bovicola bovis, B. ovis, B. caprae, Haematopinus eurysternus, Linognathus africanus, L. vituli, Solenopotes capillatus, Me

Bartonella Species Identified in Rodent and Feline Hosts from Island and Mainland Western Australia.

Bacteria of the genus Bartonella have been described in multiple mammalian hosts with many species capable of causing disease in humans. Cats and various species of rats have been reported to play a role as vertebrate hosts to a number of Bartonella spp. This study aimed to identify Bartonella spp. in Western Australia, Dirk Hartog Island (DHI), and Christmas Island (CI) and to investigate the presence of potential arthropod vectors. Feral cats were collected from CI (n = 35), DHI (n = 23) and southwest Western Australia (swWA; n = 58), and black rats were collected from CI (n = 48). Individua

Experimental infection of human erythrocytes from alcoholic patients with Bartonella quintana.

Bartonella spp. are found in the erythrocytes of their specific natural hosts and B. quintana bacteremia is associated epidemiologically with lice, alcoholism, and homelessness. The aim of our study was to compare the growth and the number of bacteria per erythrocyte in vitro in laboratory-infected red blood cells from alcoholic patients versus normal blood donor erythrocytes. Enumeration of bacteria was performed either with plate counting or with a real-time PCR quantitative assay. Number of bacteria per cell was determined using immunofluorescence assay and laser confocal microscopy. Althou

Development of a paw paw herbal shampoo for the removal of head lice.

The development and clinical testing of an herbal lice removal shampoo, containing a standardized extract of paw paw, thymol, and tea tree oil, are described. All of these ingredients were selected for their ability to deplete adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels and, thus, prevent ATP-dependent pesticide resistance. Optimum concentrations of the ingredients, treatment times, and dosing schedules were established through in vitro tests with head lice. In addition to pilot studies involving 21 participants, a final clinical trial, using the optimum shampoo formulation in 16 participants, demonst

Polyplax spinulosa infestation and antibody response in various strains of laboratory rats.

The degree and duration of Polyplax spinulosa Burm. infestation depend on the sex, age and genetic factors of the host. Various rat strains differ in the severity of lousiness. Host grooming is an important factor in the rat-louse relationship. After longlasting infestations rats become partially resistant. Serum antibody level depends mainly on the severity and the duration of the infestation, and follows the dynamics of louse population. Serum antibodies have no direct negative effect on lice.

Experimental louse-borne relapsing fever in the grivet monkey, Cercopithecus aethiops. II. Pathology.

Nineteen grivet monkeys, Cercopithecus aethiops, were infected with the spirochete of louse-borne relapsing fever, Borrelia recurrentis, and killed at various intervals following inoculation: 4 during the initial spirochetemia; 4 during remission; 3 during relapse; 2 that were dying following severe relapses; and 6 during convalescence. The histologic changes of histiocytic myocarditis, multiple microabscesses replacing the nodular white pulp of the spleen, and hepatitis with foci of midzonal necrosis were similar to those seen in humans. These changes are rarely seen in other infectious disea

Diversity of obligate ectoparasites and parasitism patterns in wild birds of the Balearic Islands: new chewing lice records for Spain.

Ectoparasites are commonly found on wild birds and might play an important role as vectors of pathogens. The Balearic Islands archipelago (Spain) is an ecological hotspot for wild birds due to its geographical location and habitat diversity. Although the avian fauna of the archipelago is well studied, little information is available regarding the ectoparasites infesting its wild bird populations. This study aimed to identify the diversity of ectoparasites (chewing lice, louse flies and ticks) and feather mites on wild birds in several locations on Menorca Island, as well as to assess the preva

The role of host traits, season and group size on parasite burdens in a cooperative mammal.

The distribution of parasites among hosts is often characterised by a high degree of heterogeneity with a small number of hosts harbouring the majority of parasites. Such patterns of aggregation have been linked to variation in host exposure and susceptibility as well as parasite traits and environmental factors. Host exposure and susceptibility may differ with sexes, reproductive effort and group size. Furthermore, environmental factors may affect both the host and parasite directly and contribute to temporal heterogeneities in parasite loads. We investigated the contributions of host and par

Parasite-specific variation and the extent of male-biased parasitism; an example with a South African rodent and ectoparasitic arthropods.

We asked whether the occurrence and the extent of host gender-biased parasitism vary among higher parasite taxa, among individual species within these taxa and within parasite species among localities. To answer this question, we studied prevalence, abundance, species richness and the level of aggregation of ectoparasites (ticks, mites, lice and fleas) collected from male and female striped mice (Rhabdomys pumilio) in 9 localities of the Western Cape Province of South Africa. We used meta-analyses to compare parasitological variables between male and female hosts across localities for individu

Determinants of population biology of the chewing louse Brueelia apiastri (Mallophaga, Philopteridae) on the European bee-eater (Merops apiaster).

In this study we examine the population biology of Brueelia apiastri, a chewing louse living on the European bee-eater (Merops apiaster). We investigate the relationships between parasite intensity of infestation, sex ratio, reproductive output, parasite size and their environment i.e. the morphology, condition, age and sex of the host. Chewing lice were collected, their sex and age (developmental stage) identified and parasite body size determined as a measure of parasite condition (larger individuals consume larger meals and larger females may produce larger clutches). The data show that the

Development of Rickettsia prowazekii DNA vaccine: cloning strategies.

Rickettsia prowazekii, the etiologic agent of louse-borne typhus, is listed as a category B agent under the select agent list of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. R. prowazekii was placed on the select agent list due to its potential to cause epidemic, high mortality in untreated and/or misdiagnosed cases, and ease of spread in vulnerable populations. Historically, R. prowazekii vaccines using crude antigen and/or inactivated rickettsia were partially protective but have been accompanied with undesirable toxic reactions and difficulties in standardization. The avail
