Pullorum disease caused by Salmonella Pullorum remains an important disease for the poultry industry due to high morbidity and mortality in many countries. Phage therapy is becoming an alternative strategy to control multidrug-resistant Salmonella infections in young chicks. However, how bacteriophages affect the growth performance of chicks infected with S. Pullorum remains poorly understood. Herein, we assessed the therapeutic efficacy of Salmonella phage CKT1 against hypervirulent arthritis-causing S. Pullorum. The results showed that single phage treatment after hypervirulent S. Pullorum i

Berberine (BBR) is an isoquinoline alkaloid, which has been used in the treatment of intestinal mucositis. However, BBR on chemotherapy-induced mucositis in cancer patients remains largely unknown. Here, we investigated the effect of BBR on intestinal mucositis induced by 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu) using rat model. We detected the degree of intestinal mucosal damage and inflammatory response in 5-Fu treated rats with or without BBR administration, and investigated the changes of fecal metabolites and gut microbiota using 1H NMR spectroscopy and 16S rRNA. The mechanism was further explored by fecal

BACKGROUND: Gut parasites exert an important influence on the gut microbiome, with many studies focusing on the human gut microbiome. It has, however, undergone severe richness depletion. Hygienic lifestyle, antimicrobial treatments and altered gut homeostasis (e.g., chronic inflammation) reduce gut microbiome richness and also parasite prevalence; which may confound results. Studying species closely related to humans could help overcome this problem by providing insights into the ancestral relationship between humans, their gut microbiome and their gut parasites. Chimpanzees are a particularl

Early administration of Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 (LR) prevents necrotizing enterocolitis and inhibits regulatory T-cell (Treg)-deficiency-associated autoimmunity in mice. In humans, LR reduces crying time in breastfed infants with colic, modifies severity in infants with acute diarrheal illnesses, and improves pain in children with functional bowel disorders. In healthy breastfed newborns with evolving microbial colonization, it is unclear if early administration of LR can modulate gut microbiota and their metabolites in such a way as to promote homeostasis. We gavaged LR (107 colony-fo

Contact-dependent growth inhibition (CDI) is a widespread mechanism of bacterial competition. CDI(+) bacteria deliver the toxic C-terminal region of contact-dependent inhibition A proteins (CdiA-CT) into neighboring target bacteria and produce CDI immunity proteins (CdiI) to protect against self-inhibition. The CdiA-CT(EC536) deployed by uropathogenic Escherichia coli 536 (EC536) is a bacterial toxin 28 (Ntox28) domain that only exhibits ribonuclease activity when bound to the cysteine biosynthetic enzyme O-acetylserine sulfhydrylase A (CysK). Here, we present crystal structures of the CysK/Cd

Metastatic prostate cancer (MPCa) remains an aggressive disease despite the introduction of androgen receptor pathway inhibitors (ARPIs), and biomarkers predicting progression are still lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate gut microbiota (GM) composition and functional potential associated with advanced disease and progression under ARPI therapy. The GM of 15 patients with metastatic PCa receiving ARPIs, including 5 patients with disease progression, was compared with that of 39 patients with untreated (UT) PCa using shallow shotgun metagenomic sequencing. The metastatic PCa cohor

BACKGROUND: Sibling factors are linked not only to disease development but also to gut environmental factors (e.g., microbiota, short-chain fatty acids [SCFA]). However, these associations among preschoolers and their underlying mechanisms remain unclear.
METHODS: In a sub-cohort study of a nationwide birth-cohort study, using fecal microbiome and SCFA data from 903 children at age 2 or 4 years, we examined associations of sibling factors with gut environmental factors. We also determined enterotypes by clustering and sibling-enterotype associations with potential mediation pathways.

Beef cattle transport commonly induces stress, which may disrupt physiological homeostasis and alter the gut microbiota, thereby affecting animal welfare and production performance. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of melatonin and dexmedetomidine on transport-induced stress. A total of 15 healthy Simmental bulls were enrolled and administered melatonin, dexmedetomidine, or physiological saline prior to a 6 h transport period (n = 5 per group). Blood and fecal samples were collected before transport and on days 1, 4, and 7 post-transport. Hematological parameters, biochemical in

INTRODUCTION: Laterally spreading tumors (LSTs) are pathologically classified into adenomas, including low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (LGIN) and high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (HGIN), and sessile serrated lesions (SSL). HGIN has a higher risk of progressing to colorectal cancer.
METHODS: This study compared the gut microbiome across these three pathological subtypes using fecal shotgun metagenomic sequencing and non-targeted metabolomics in 53 patients.
RESULTS: Overall community structure was similar among groups by Bray-Curtis NMDS and ANOSIM, although HGIN exhibited higher alph

Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is a chronic illness that commonly demands the use of medication, sometimes for long term. In a DSS mouse model, we examined 5-aminosalicylic acid (5ASA) in comparison to a defined polyphenol-rich herbal mixture CSPG: Cirsium japonicum, Scutellaria baicalensis, Paeonia japonica, and Glycyrrhizae radix, using a two-phase approach. In phase 1 (days 1-14, without DSS stimulation), the herbal formula CSPG produced a more gut-friendly preventive profile compared to 5ASA in non-inflammatory condition:Unlike 5-ASA, which decreases microbial diversity as previously reported, CS

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) involves epithelial barrier disruption, immune dysregulation, and microbial imbalance. The present study investigated the protective mechanisms of Laetiporus sulphureus polysaccharides (LSP) in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis, focusing on intestinal barrier restoration, immunomodulation, and gut microbiota remodeling.
METHODS: LSP was structurally characterized using HPLC, FTIR, and SEM analyses, revealing a heteropolysaccharide primarily composed of glucose (55.16%), galactose (16.55%), and mannose (13.52%). Experimental colitis was i

OBJECTIVES: Dietary fiber, particularly resistant starch (RS), has been proposed to modulate the gut microbiota and immune microenvironment; however, individual intervention studies yield inconsistent results due to inter-study heterogeneity. This study aimed to identify reproducible gut microbiota responses to RS across multiple independent cohorts and explore the ecological basis by which RS shapes microbial community structure.
METHODS: Gut microbiota composition was analyzed in 586 paired fecal samples collected from healthy adults in multiple independent cohorts undergoing RS dietary int

INTRODUCTION: Slow transit constipation (STC) is a prevalent gastrointestinal disorder characterized by impaired intestinal motility, metabolic dysregulation, and gut microbial dysbiosis. Zingiber mioga (Thunb.) Rosc. (RH), a traditional medicinal-edible plant, is empirically used to alleviate gastrointestinal dysfunction, but its therapeutic mechanisms in STC remain unclear. Herein, we investigated the laxative efficacy and mechanism of RH in a rat STC model via integrated untargeted metabolomic and metagenomic analyses, providing experimental evidence for its clinical use.
METHODS: A rat ST

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence suggests that cold environment is a potential risk factor for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and is associated with poor prognosis, however, its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Since gut dysbiosis and AIS are causally related and cold environment can induce changes in the gut microbiota, we wondered whether cold-season-related gut dysbiosis aggravates stroke progression. METHODS: In total, 101 patients with AIS were enrolled and divided into two groups: cold-season onset ischemic stroke (CIS) and non-cold-season onset ischemic stroke (NCIS). Gut microbiota co

BACKGROUND: Early intestinal development plays a significant role in determining long-term broiler health and performance; however, information on the effects of new buffer salt-protected sodium butyrate (NBSB) during this stage remains limited. The present study evaluated the early stage effects of NBSB on growth performance, intestinal health, and cecal microbiota, building on our previous 42-day study using ELISA, RT-qPCR, gas chromatography, and 16S rRNA sequencing. In total, 192 day-old male broiler chicks were allocated to three groups using a completely randomized design with eight repl

BACKGROUND: The human microbiome, particularly the gut microbiome, plays a critical role in host immunity, metabolism, and barrier function. Emerging evidence suggests that persistent alterations in microbiome composition-termed dysbiosis-may contribute to the development and symptom persistence of Long COVID.
AIMS: To map the available literature on microbiome dysbiosis in relation to Long COVID, identify key microbial alterations, associated symptoms, and evaluate potential microbiome-targeted interventions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The scoping review followed Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) m

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver disease worldwide with complex pathogenesis and no approved specific therapy. Siraitia grosvenorii is a widely used medicinal and edible herb, yet its efficacy and underlying mechanisms against MAFLD remain poorly defined. This study explored the protective effects and potential mechanisms of aqueous extract of Siraitia grosvenorii (AESG) on MAFLD. Based on ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-linear trap quadrupole orbitrap mass spectrometry (UHPLC-LTQ-Orbitrap-MS) analysis, 38 components

BACKGROUND: Post-infectious cough (PIC) is a leading cause of chronic cough in children, often persisting after respiratory infections and significantly impairing quality of life. Current therapies, such as montelukast sodium (MAS), offer only partial symptom relief and do not target the underlying inflammatory and microbiota-driven mechanisms. Emerging evidence suggests that the lung-gut axis, ERK pathway activation, and cytokine-microbiota interactions are central to PIC pathogenesis. Morusin, a prenylated flavonoid from Morus alba, possesses anti-inflammatory and barrier-protective activiti
