Antibodies to arthropod-borne encephalitis viruses in small mammals from southern Florida.

From 1987 through 1991, blood samples were collected from 10 species of small mammals in Indian River Country, Florida (USA). Sera from 1,347 animals were analyzed for hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) antibody to St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) and eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) viruses. Of these, 75 (5.6%) were positive for HI antibody to SLE virus and 121 (9.0%) were positive for EEE antibody. Sera from five mammalian species were tested for neutralizing (NT) antibody to SLE, EEE, Highlands J (HJ a member of the western equine encephalitis virus complex), or Everglades (EVE, a member of the

Pneumonic pasteurellosis associated with Pasteurella haemolytica in chipmunks (Tamias sibiricus).

A laboratory study was performed in order to identify the possible cause of death in chipmunks (Tamias sibiricus) imported from China with respiratory disease. Severe congestion, alveolar oedema and fibrinous pleuritis were observed. Biochemical analyses identified the causative organism as Pasteurella haemolytica. An in vitro susceptibility test using various antimicrobial agents revealed sensitivity to beta-lactams (ampicillin and amoxicillin) and streptomycin.

Prevention of cholesterol-induced gallstones by hyodeoxycholic acid in the prairie dog.

Prairie dogs of both sexes were fed a semisynthetic diet containing 0.35% cholesterol for a period of 8 weeks. This lithogenic diet induced cholesterol gallstones in ten "lithogenic control animals", five males and five females. Three animals maintained with a high glucose, fat-free diet did not develop gallstones although the cholesterol saturation of their bile approached unity. The formation of gallstones was prevented in four out of five males and all five females fed the lithogenic diet plus 0.1% hyodeoxycholic acid (30 mg per kg body weight per day). The biles of the prairie dogs receivi

Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms Reveal Spatial Diversity Among Clones of Yersinia pestis During Plague Outbreaks in Colorado and the Western United States.

BACKGROUND: In western North America, plague epizootics caused by Yersinia pestis appear to sweep across landscapes, primarily infecting and killing rodents, especially ground squirrels and prairie dogs. During these epizootics, the risk of Y. pestis transmission to humans is highest. While empirical models that include climatic conditions and densities of rodent hosts and fleas can predict when epizootics are triggered, bacterial transmission patterns across landscapes, and the scale at which Y. pestis is maintained in nature during inter-epizootic periods, are poorly defined. Elucidating the

Enzootic plague reduces black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) survival in Montana.

Black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) require extensive prairie dog colonies (Cynomys spp.) to provide habitat and prey. Epizootic plague kills both prairie dogs and ferrets and is a major factor limiting recovery of the highly endangered ferret. In addition to epizootics, we hypothesized that enzootic plague, that is, presence of disease-causing Yersinia pestis without any noticeable prairie dog die off, may also affect ferret survival. We reduced risk of plague on portions of two ferret reintroduction areas by conducting flea control for 3 years. Beginning in 2004, about half of the ferret

Occupational risks during a monkeypox outbreak, Wisconsin, 2003.

We determined factors associated with occupational transmission in Wisconsin during the 2003 outbreak of prairie dog--associated monkeypox virus infections. Our investigation included active contact surveillance, exposure-related interviews, and a veterinary facility cohort study. We identified 19 confirmed, 5 probable, and 3 suspected cases. Rash, headache, sweats, and fever were reported by > 80% of patients. Occupationally transmitted infections occurred in 12 veterinary staff, 2 pet store employees, and 2 animal distributors. The following were associated with illness: working directly wit

Spotted fever group rickettsiae in immature and adult ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) from a focus of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in Connecticut.

Immature and adult ixodid ticks were collected during 1983 and 1984 in Newtown, Connecticut, an area endemic for Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), to determine prevalence of infection by spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae. Direct fluorescent-antibody (FA) staining revealed SFG organisms in 6 (1.8%) of 332 Dermacentor variabilis larvae, 5 (7.8%) of 64 D. variabilis nymphs, and in 2 (40%) of 5 Ixodes cookei nymphs removed from small- and medium-sized mammals. Hemolymph tests detected rickettsia-like organisms in 15 (8.8%) of 170 D. variabilis adults; 8 specimens retested by direct FA were

Introduced Siberian chipmunks (Tamias sibiricus barberi) harbor more-diverse Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato genospecies than native bank voles (Myodes glareolus).

Little attention has been given in scientific literature to how introduced species may act as a new host for native infectious agents and modify the epidemiology of a disease. In this study, we investigated whether an introduced species, the Siberian chipmunk (Tamias sibiricus barberi), was a potentially new reservoir host for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the causative agent of Lyme disease. First, we ascertained whether chipmunks were infected by all of the B. burgdorferi sensu lato genospecies associated with rodents and available in their source of infection, questing nymphs. Second, we

Transmission of monkeypox among persons exposed to infected prairie dogs in Indiana in 2003.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a cluster of human monkeypox cases associated with exposure to ill prairie dogs in a home child care. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS: We identified all persons exposed to 2 pet prairie dogs in County A, Indiana; performed active surveillance for symptomatic monkeypox infection; and evaluated the types of exposure that may have resulted in infection. For children who attended the child care where the animals were housed, we also measured the rate of seroconversion to monkeypox virus. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Nine (13%) of 70 persons exposed to the prairie dogs reported sig
