BACKGROUND: Vegetables and fruits are essential parts of a healthy diet; however, the consumption of unclean, uncooked, and improperly prepared vegetables and fruits is a major cause of parasitic and bacterial infections. These vegetables and fruits are contaminated during pre- and post-harvest stages. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis provides evidence-based scientific information about the level of both parasitic and bacterial contamination of vegetables and fruits and its associated factors in Ethiopia. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, Web

This study aimed to investigate the role of interleukin (IL)-25 in the pathogenesis of angiostrongylosis. We used ICR mice as non-permissive hosts, divided them into groups and experimentally infected them with infective larvae of the Angiostrongylus cantonensis. Two groups of infected mice were injected intraperitoneally with either mouse IL-25 or an anti-IL-25 monoclonal antibody (mAb) at 3 days post-infection (dpi), followed by booster injections at the same dose every 5 days. Serum samples and brain tissues were collected weekly from each group for immunological and pathological examinatio

Angiostrongyliasis, the primary cause of eosinophilic meningitis, represents an emerging disease caused by Angiostrongylus cantonensis larvae, inadvertently transmitted to humans. The diagnosis of human angiostrongyliasis relies on epidemiological features, clinical symptoms, medical history, and laboratory findings, notably hyper eosinophilia in blood and cerebrospinal fluid. Consequently, accurate diagnosis is challenging and prone to confusion with other parasitic diseases. The quest for an early, rapid, and specific diagnostic test for angiostrongyliasis persists, driven by the imperative

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a food-borne parasite that can infect mammals, including humans, causing angiostrongyliasis. The nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a transcription factor that plays a crucial role in the host's antioxidant defense and inflammation mechanisms. Herein, this study investigates the anti-inflammatory effects of Nrf2 in A. cantonensis-induced parasitic meningitis in mice.
METHODS: We used animal infection and treatment, larvae collection, western blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stain, blood-brain

Tuft cells are an epithelial cell type critical for initiating type 2 immune responses to parasites and protozoa in the small intestine. To respond to these stimuli, intestinal tuft cells use taste chemosensory signaling pathways, but the role of taste receptors in type 2 immunity is poorly understood. In this study, we show that the taste receptor TAS1R3, which detects sweet and umami in the tongue, also regulates tuft cell responses in the distal small intestine. BALB/c mice, which have an inactive form of TAS1R3, as well as Tas1r3-deficient C57BL6/J mice both have severely impaired response

The 14-3-3 proteins are cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) markers of neuronal damage during infectious meningitis and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Little is known about dynamic changes in the individual isoforms in response to parasitic eosinophilic meningitis. The purposes of this study were to determine the 14-3-3 protein isoform patterns, examine the kinetics and correlate the severity of blood brain barrier (BBB) damage with the expressions of these markers in mice with eosinophilic meningitis. Mice were orally infected with 50 A. cantonensis L3 via an oro-gastric tube and sacrificed every week for

INTRODUCTION: Human angiostrongyliasis (HA) is a neurological helminthic disease caused by the lung worm Angiostrongylus cantonensis. It is suspected in the combination of travel or a residence in an endemic area and eosinophilic meningitis. In Mayotte, an island in the Indian Ocean, cases are rare but regular. The main objective of our study was to describe the epidemiological and diagnosis clues of HA in Mayotte. The secondary objectives were to evaluate the contribution of Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT- PCR) for the diagnosis of HA, delineate the characteristics of the local trans

Angistrongylus cantonensis is a zoonotic nematode parasite and causative agent of human angiostrongyliasis, which clinically presents as eosinophilic meningitis or meningoencephalitis. Diagnosis of the disease is problematic since parasitologic findings are infrequent, and infection determinations must be based on the clinical symptoms and serological tests with limited specificities and sensitivities. The aim of the present study was to identify and generate a novel recombinant protein from A. cantonensis and evaluate its efficacy in the diagnosis of human angiostrongyliasis when incorporated

Angiostrongyliasis has been frequently reported from the People's Republic of China during the last decade. An outbreak of angiostrongyliasis among migrant laborers in Guangning, Guangdong Province is described here. A questionnaire was developed to collect epidemiological and clinical information about 17 migrant laborers from the Bai ethnic group in Dali, Yunnan Province. Serum samples were collected and tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Rats and mollusks from the same area where patients had collected Pomacea canaliculata were examined for presence of Angiostrongylus cantonensis.

Developmentally arrested infective larvae of strongylid nematodes are activated to resume growth by host-derived cues encountered during invasion of the mammalian host. Exposure of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infective larvae to elevated temperature (37°C) is sufficient to activate signalling pathways which result in resumption of feeding and protein secretion. This occurs independently of exposure to serum or glutathione, in contrast to the hookworm Ancylostoma caninum, and is not initiated by chemical exsheathment. No qualitative differences in protein secretion were induced by host serum a

Parasitic nematodes of the group Cyathostominae are an important cause of disease in horses. This group consists of approximately 50 species, all of which have similar life cycles that involve encystment of larval stages in the large intestinal wall. Encysted larvae can persist for months to years and, occasionally, large numbers can accumulate and emerge synchronously to cause severe pathology, resulting in diarrhoea, weight loss, colic and/or oedema. This syndrome, known as larval cyathostominosis, can be fatal in up to 50% of cases, despite treatment. There is no diagnostic method that enab

Intestinal parasitic infection is still a major problem in humans and animals, yet host immunity against gut parasitic infection remains partially understood. Eosinophilia and mastocytosis are features of such infection that have been shown to be genetically controlled. The expression of IL-6 is detected in eosinophils, mast cells and neutrophils and may be responsible for the regulation of leucocytes at infective sites. The relationships between IL-6 expression, eosinophilia, mastocytosis and host immunity remain unclear. In the present report, a close correlation between IL-6 mRNA+ cells, eo

Expression of mast cell granule protease is regulated in a tissue-specific fashion in the rat. The granule chymases rat mast cell proteases I and II (RMCP I and II) predominate in non-mucosal and mucosal sites, respectively. Intestinal mastocytosis, a T cell-mediated phenomenon associated with enteric nematodiasis, is accompanied by massive local expression of RMCP II and by release of this protease systemically into blood. The present observations, where both RMCP I and II have been quantified by ELISA and immunolocalized by paired fluorescence, show that the expression of both proteases in p

The resistance of inbred mice to nematode infections varies depending on the extent of protective Th2 responses. Here, we compared two mouse lines differing in resistance to infection with the enteric nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus bakeri despite the similar instruction of GATA-3+ T effector cells. Resistant BALB/c mice rapidly recruited high numbers of Th2 cells to the gut within the 1-week time frame required for larval development in the intestinal submucosa. C57BL/6 mice failed in the optimal control of early nematode fitness, with mucosal Th2 response peaking after 2 weeks when the la

"Taste-like" tuft cells in the intestine trigger type 2 immunity in response to worm infection. The secretion of interleukin-13 (IL-13) from type 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2) represents a key step in the tuft cell-ILC2 cell-intestinal epithelial cell circuit that drives the clearance of worms from the gut via type 2 immune responses. Hallmark features of type 2 responses include tissue remodeling, such as tuft and goblet cell expansion, and villus atrophy, yet it remains unclear if additional molecular changes in the gut epithelium facilitate the clearance of worms from the gut. Using gut or

Intestinal helminth infections are highly prevalent in the developing world, often resulting in chronic infection and inflicting high host morbidity. With the emergence of drug-resistant parasites, a limited number of chemotherapeutic drugs available and stalling vaccine efforts, an increased understanding of antihelminth immunity is essential to provide new avenues to therapeutic intervention. MicroRNAs are a class of small, nonprotein coding RNAs which negatively regulate mRNA translation, thus providing finite control over gene expression in a plethora of biological settings. The miRNA-medi

Helminth infections are typically chronic in nature; however, the exact molecular mechanisms by which these parasites promote or thwart host immunity remain unclear. Worm expulsion requires the differentiation of CD4(+) T cells into Th2 cells, while regulatory T cells (Tregs) act to dampen the extent of the Th2 response. Priming of T cells requires drainage or capture of antigens within lymphoid tissues, and in the case of intestinal helminths, such sites include the mucosa-associated Peyer's patches (PPs) and the draining mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN). To gain insight into when and where the a

The anti-inflammatory properties of parasitic helminths have been largely linked to their excretory-secretory (ES) products. Some studies have noted a lack of TNF-alpha production and limited recruitment of neutrophils into the lungs after Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection. We previously reported that instillation of ES from L3 larvae of N. brasiliensis to the lungs could inhibit the recruitment of neutrophils on a background of LPS-induced inflammation. A similar reduction in neutrophil recruitment was observed in this study. This reduction was associated with the significant inhibition

Nematode parasitism is a worldwide health problem resulting in malnutrition and morbidity in over 1 billion people. The molecular mechanisms governing infection are poorly understood. Here, we report that an evolutionarily conserved nuclear hormone receptor signaling pathway governs development of the stage 3 infective larvae (iL3) in several nematode parasites, including Strongyloides stercoralis, Ancylostoma spp., and Necator americanus. As in the free-living Caenorhabditis elegans, steroid hormone-like dafachronic acids induced recovery of the dauer-like iL3 in parasitic nematodes by activa
