KBG syndrome (KBGS, OMIM #148050) is a rare genetic disorder caused by heterozygous truncating or missense variants in the ANKRD11 gene or a deletion of 16q24.3 involving ANKRD11. While truncating variants clearly disrupt protein function, the interpretation of missense variants is more challenging, as many remain variants of uncertain significance (VUS). To address this, we evaluated PhenoScore, an open-source AI-based phenomics framework integrating facial recognition and medical data analysis, for predicting the pathogenicity of ANKRD11 missense variants and providing supporting evidence fo

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the use of 3 types of biodegradable, high molecular weight DL-lactic acid (PLA) membranes containing respectively 0%, 10%, and 30% low molecular weight oligomers for obtaining guided tissue regeneration following treatment of experimental buccal periodontal defects created surgically in 6 young adult beagle dogs. On the buccal aspects of test and control teeth, a mucoperiostal flap was raised and the buccal alveolar bone removed. The exposed root surfaces were scaled and a notch was prepared in the root surface at the level of the reduced crest. PLA

This paper describes a surgical technique to achieve root coverage in deep, wide gingival recessions using a root isolation procedure with ePTFE membrane, combined with tetracycline conditioning of the root surface and fibrin-fibronectin sealing system application. The technique was used on 15 patients with isolated mucogingival defects 4 to 6 mm deep. A large trapezium-shaped flap was raised 3 to 4 mm apical to the margin of the bone dehiscence. The root surface was thoroughly scaled by hand and rotating instruments. Tetracycline HCl solution (100 mg/ml) was topically applied for 4 minutes. E

OBJECTIVES: Transverse microradiography (TMR) remains the reference standard for assessment of enamel remineralisation, however it is destructive to the sample and precludes longitudinal analysis. X-ray microtomography (XMT) offers a non-destructive alternative, though its accuracy for remineralisation analysis relative to TMR has not been established. The objective of this study was to compare conventional Micro-CT (Cµ-CT), synchrotron radiation-computed tomography (SR-CT) and TMR for assessment of enamel subsurface lesion remineralisation by casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium fluoride p

OBJECTIVES: The effectiveness of hydroxyapatite (HAP) toothpastes in remineralizing initial caries and preventing caries development has been well-established. Calcium hypophosphite (CaP) is a calcium compound that readily dissolves in water providing calcium ions, and as such can promote remineralization. The present study investigated the potential of CaP to enhance the caries remineralizing capacity of HAP-containing toothpaste.
METHODS: 120 bovine tooth blocks were randomly assigned to four toothpaste groups (30/group) containing either 20% HAP, 20% HAP + 1% CaP, 1% CaP, or 1450 ppm fluor

Bacterial biofilms are one of the primary causes of pathogenic activity in the oral environment; they adhere to both natural and artificial oral surfaces, causing cariogenic processes that result in dental decay and significantly reducing the lifespan of dental restoratives and prostheses; they can also affect the tissues surrounding teeth, causing gingival inflammation; persistent biofilms can cause damage to the alveolar bone, which in extreme cases may result in tooth loss; our study aims to isolate clinical isolates that are resistant to multiple drugs, before disarming them by suppressing

BACKGROUND: Malocclusion affects oral health and aesthetics, traditionally classified using systems like Angle's, which depend on physical exams or casts. Digital dentistry has shifted towards intraoral photography for documentation and assessment, though interpretation requires clinical expertise. The application of artificial intelligence (AI), and specifically deep learning, in medical imaging has been successful but remains largely unexplored in occlusal classification from intraoral photos. This study introduces a deep learning model to automate the classification of occlusal types from i

BACKGROUND: In the past, dentistry heavily relied on manual image analysis and diagnostic procedures, which could be time-consuming and prone to human error. The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) has brought transformative potential to the field, promising enhanced accuracy and efficiency in various dental imaging tasks. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to comprehensively evaluate the applications of AI in dental imaging modalities, focusing on in-vitro studies.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted, in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. The following da

BACKGROUND: The need for whole mandibular bone reconstruction and bilateral joint replacement is fortunately rare, but it is an extremely challenging topic in maxillofacial surgery, due to its functional implications. CAD-CAM techniques development has opened new broad horizons in the surgical planning of complex maxillofacial reconstructions, in terms of accuracy, predictability, and functional cosmetic results. The review of the literature has revealed a small number of scientific reports on total mandibulectomy including the condyles, with only eleven cases from 1980. Most of the works desc

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to understand how artificial intelligence (AI) influences dentists by comparing their gaze behavior when using versus not using an AI software to detect primary proximal carious lesions on bitewing radiographs.
METHODS: 22 dentists assessed a median of 18 bitewing images resulting in 170 datasets from dentists without AI and 179 datasets from dentists with AI, after excluding data with poor gaze recording quality. We compared time to first fixation, fixation count, average fixation duration, and fixation frequency between both trial groups. Analyses were performed for the
