Gender-based violence against female sex workers in Cameroon: prevalence and associations with sexual HIV risk and access to health services and justice.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Female sex workers (FSWs) are at risk for HIV and physical and sexual gender-based violence (GBV). We describe the prevalence of lifetime GBV and its associations with HIV risk behaviour, access to health services and barriers in accessing justice among FSWs in Cameroon. METHODS: FSWs (n=1817) were recruited for a cross-sectional study through snowball sampling in seven cities in Cameroon. We examined associations of lifetime GBV with key outcomes via adjusted logistic regression models. RESULTS: Overall, 60% (1098/1817) had experienced physical or sexual violence in t

Psychiatric patient violence adversely affects healthcare workers' quality of life and patient quality of care. In contrast to the common adult patient emphasis, the present study was designed to examine the relationship between healthcare staff-directed verbal and physical violence exhibited by children and adolescent psychiatric inpatients and post-traumatic stress (PTSD) symptoms, emotional labour, and physical and mental fatigue of staff. Our cross- sectional study recruited 113 multidisciplinary staff members working in child and adolescent psychiatric wards: 33 (29.2%) educational staff,

Scoping workplace aggression in nursing: findings from an Australian study.

AIM: This paper reports a study of workplace aggression among nurses in Tasmania, Australia. There is international concern about a perceived rise in occupational violence as a major worldwide public health problem, with associated financial costs. BACKGROUND: There is reason to suspect that aggression towards nurses is increasing. For example, increased illicit drug use puts nurses at the sharp end in managing patients admitted with drug-related problems. Such people are often resistant to healthcare intervention, and often have associated disorders, including mental illness. Despite this in

Development and psychometric validation of the media-influenced healthcare violence perception scale in Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: Violence against healthcare professionals is a growing public health concern with significant implications for workforce sustainability, work-life integration, quality of care, and patient safety. Although the prevalence and consequences of violence in healthcare are well documented, the ways in which media exposure shapes public perceptions, emotional responses, and the psychosocial well-being of healthcare workers remain insufficiently measured. This study aimed to develop and psychometrically validate the Media-Influenced Healthcare Violence Perception Scale (MHVPS). METHODS: An

Assessing formal service providers' readiness to address IPV among women with disabilities in Sweden: A mixed-methods analysis.

Women with disabilities face a heightened risk of intimate partner violence (IPV), yet formal support systems often remain ill-equipped to address their specific needs. This study assesses indicators of readiness among formal service providers in Sweden, including healthcare, social services, shelters, the police, and the Centre against Violence, to support women with disabilities who experience IPV. Employing a sequential exploratory mixed-methods design, the study combined qualitative interviews (N = 18) with a national survey (N = 1,151). Data analysis was guided by an adapted version of Co

Alcohol in fatal and nonfatal injuries: a comparison of coroner and emergency room data from the same county.

Although alcohol is thought to be associated with severity of injury, relatively little data are available that compares alcohol's involvement in injury cases treated in the emergency room (ER) with coroner cases of injury fatality, both coming from the same county. Data from a probability sample of casualty patients 18 years and older treated at the University of Mississippi Medical Center ER in Jackson during a 6-month period (n = 275) are compared with data from coroner reports of all fatalities from unnatural causes among those 18 and older in the same county during a 1-year period surroun

Nurse-endorsed strategies to repair nurse-employer relationships, alleviate burnout, boost retention, and rebuild trust in the post-pandemic era.

BACKGROUND: Burnout, turnover, and eroded trust between nurses and healthcare organizations worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to threaten workforce stability. Addressing these issues requires understanding both individual and system-level contributors to nurse distress. PURPOSE: This study sought to identify nurse-endorsed strategies for reducing burnout and improving organizational resilience through analysis of pandemic-era survey data. METHODS: A qualitative content analysis was conducted using responses from two organizational surveys completed during the pandemic. Traum

Why Are Workplace Social Support Programs Not Improving the Mental Health of Canadian Correctional Officers? An Examination of the Theoretical Concepts Underpinning Support.

In Canada, public safety personnel, including correctional officers, experience high rates of mental health problems. Correctional officers' occupational stress has been characterized as insidious and chronic due to multiple and unpredictable occupational risk factors such as violence, unsupportive colleagues and management, poor prison conditions, and shift work. Given the increased risk of adverse mental health outcomes associated with operational stressors, organizational programs have been developed to provide correctional officers with support to promote mental well-being and to provide m

METHODS: A total of 281 nurses were recruited in this cross-sectional study. The questionnaire consisted of sections on lateral violence, psychological resilience, coping styles and turnover intentions. Descriptive correlation studies examined the relationships among the research variables, while structural equation modeling tested the validity of the proposed theoretical framework. RESULTS: Lateral violence was positi

Risk factors and consequences of mental health problems in nurses: A scoping review of cohort studies.

Mental health problems in nurses are prevalent and impairing. To date, no literature has comprehensively synthesised cohort evidence on mental health among nurses. This scoping review aimed to synthesise the existing literature on the risk factors and consequences of mental health problems in nurses. A systematic search was conducted on PubMed, EMBASE, Epistemonikos database, Web of Science, CINAHL, and PsycINFO from inception to March 2023. We identified 171 cohort studies from 16 countries, mostly (95.3%) from high-income economies. This review indicated that nurses worldwide encountered sig

Opening the Door to Zero New HIV Infections in Closed Settings.

Prisons and other closed settings are high-risk environments for HIV and tuberculosis (TB) transmission. Prisoners often experience overcrowded living conditions and violence-including sexual assault-increasing their vulnerability to HIV and TB. However, high infection rates in prisons affect both prisoners and prison employees. Both groups, in interacting with their families and their communities, represent a potential risk of HIV transmission outside the prison setting. National HIV and TB strategies should therefore include measures to prevent transmission and increase access to HIV-related

Medication Use and Physical Assaults in the Psychiatric Emergency Department.

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between medications used to treat acute agitation (antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and benzodiazepines) and subsequent assault incidence in the psychiatric emergency department. Methods: Medication orders and assault incident reports were obtained from electronic health records for 17,056 visits to an urban psychiatric emergency department from 2014 to 2019. Assault risk was modeled longitudinally using Poisson mixed-effects regression. Results: Assaults were reported during 0.5% of visits. Intramuscular (IM) medications were ordered in 23.3% of visits
