Sentence Composition Instruction With Language Supports for a Fifth Grader With a Learning Disability: A Pilot Study.

PURPOSE: Writing interventions for elementary-grade students with learning disabilities have traditionally focused on paragraph-level strategies (McMaster et al., 2018). Students who struggle to compose a complete sentence need more explicit instruction and may benefit from additional language and self-regulation supports (Kim & Graham, 2022). The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the effect of a sentence writing intervention on the writing of a fifth-grade student with a learning disability. METHOD: This pilot study used an exploratory AB single-case design to measure the effect

Grid to glide: A simple visual cue that alleviates upper-limb freezing.

Freezing of the upper limb (FoUL) is a poorly explored manifestation of Parkinson's disease. This report describes a case of a 54-year-old woman with FoUL predominantly affecting handwriting. Writing on grid paper with small squares (0.5 × 0.5 cm) markedly reduced FoUL frequency. A subsequent daily home-based writing and calligraphic training program led to sustained improvements in handwriting legibility, drawing ability, and transfer to writing on blank paper without the grid, without any change in medication. The immediate response to grid paper suggests that simple visual cueing-possibly b

The relationship of agraphia to the severity of dementia in Alzheimer's disease.

Impairment of writing ability was studied in 20 patients with mild to moderate dementia caused by early-onset Alzheimer's disease. A multicomponent analysis was made of a brief narrative writing sample obtained from each patient, and this writing proficiency score was compared with results of standard tests of cognitive function as well as ratings of the degree of dementia. In these patients, significant correlations were observed between this brief test of narrative writing ability and the severity of dementia. An analysis of writing proficiency appears to be a simple means of assessing the s

How do technologies meet the needs of the writer with dyslexia? An examination of functions scaffolding the transcription and proofreading in text production aimed towards researchers and practitioners in education.

Technological reading and writing tools can help students with dyslexia improve their writing, but students do not use reading and writing functions as much as expected. However, research addressing relevant technological functions is scarce. This study explored the needs of writers with dyslexia and how technological writing tools developed for three Nordic languages meet these needs. Snowball sampling was used to identify different technological features, spellchecker, word prediction, auto-correction, text-to-speech and speech-to-text functions available in nine widely used programmes were

Intermediate-Grade Teachers' Adaptations for Weaker Writers: A National Survey in Urban Schools in Chile.

Two hundred fifty-four intermediate-grade teachers (88% female) in urban public schools in Chile indicated how frequently they made writing instructional adaptations for their weakest writers, which included students with learning and other disabilities. A majority of teachers reported making the following adaptations for their weakest writers at least once a week: individual tutoring, assistance from a peer when writing, and extra instruction in grammar/spelling, planning/revising, handwriting, sentence construction, and text structure. On a monthly basis or more often, a majority of teachers

The agraphia of Alzheimer's disease.

Hypothesizing that agraphia in Alzheimer's disease (AD) reflects disturbances in multiple cognitive domains, we evaluated writing samples from 33 patients meeting strict criteria for probable AD. We found agraphia to be common on a standard narrative writing task. When compared with 41 education- and age-matched normal control subjects, AD patients had significantly lower writing scores, wrote significantly fewer words, mentioned significantly fewer categories of information, and were significantly more likely to make writing errors. On stepwise regression procedures, neuropsychological measur

Dysexecutive agraphia: a major executive dysfunction sign.

Different types of writing disorders associated with brain pathology have been described. Limited mention the writing disturbances associated with prefrontal pathology, however, is found. Clinical observations of patients not only with focal prefrontal pathology but also with other conditions affecting the frontal system (e.g., traumatic head injury, dementia) confirm the assumption that these patients present an overt decrease in the ability to express ideas in writing. It is proposed that complex aspects of writing, such as planning, narrative coherence, and maintained attention, are signifi

Study on death certificates and postmortem examination certificates written by Korean emergency physicians.

INTRODUCTION: Statistics on death are the basis of a country's health, safety, and welfare policies. Emergency physicians issue a postmortem examination certificate (PEC) for death outside the hospital as well as a death certificate (DC) for death in the hospital. This study investigated the actual conditions and criteria for writing a DC and PEC, writing environment, and doctor's experience. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The physicians' DC and PEC writing experience and demographic data were analyzed. The questions focused on CPR, patient's medical certificate, time and place of death, difficulty in

The Modularity of Dysgraphia.

Research regarding dysgraphia, an impairment in writing, is attaining more attention in recent times. The existing studies on dysgraphia draw insights from cognitive, behavioural, neurological, and genetic fields of knowledge. However, these multiple studies on dysgraphia fail to illustrate how these cognitive, behavioural, neurological, and genetic systems interact and intersect in dysgraphia. Therefore, the studies could not offer a comprehensive understanding of dysgraphia. In order to fill this gap, the review attempts to study dysgraphia using the notion of modularity by accommodating ins

Intransigent vowel-consonant position in Korean dysgraphia: evidence of spatial-constructive representation.

Dysgraphia due to a focal brain lesion can be characterized by substitution, transposition, deletion and/or addition errors of graphemes or strokes. However, those linguistic errors can be language-specific because the writing system of a given language may influence error patterns. We investigated a Korean stroke patient, a 57-year-old English teacher with dysgraphia both in Korean Han-geul [see text] and in English alphabet writings. The results of an experimental testing revealed transposition errors between a consonant and a vowel only in English but not in Korean writings. This austerity

A qualitative thematic comparative analysis of independent and AI-supported clinical reflections among medical interns.

BACKGROUND: Reflection is fundamental to medical education, supporting clinical reasoning, professional identity formation, and lifelong learning. Although generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots have emerged as tools to facilitate reflection, little is known about how AI-supported reflection differs from independent reflective writing. This study compared the characteristics and educational contributions of independent reflective writing and AI-supported reflection among medical interns. METHODS: A comparative qualitative quasi-experimental study was conducted with medical interns d

The longitudinal influence of the level of executive function development on children's transcriptional skills: a modern view of A. Luria's ideas.

In the realm of Cultural-Historical Theory, A. Luria suggested writing as a model of a complex system of higher mental function, since that function is based on various psycho-physiological mechanisms, including processing of audial and visual information; and as a complex system of the frontal lobe functions of overcoming perseveration, and creation and control of the writing program. Subsequent research on these topics has shown a close association between the level of development of executive functions (EF) and writing skills. Nevertheless, the question of which parts of EF influence which

Adolescents with learning disorders have atypical EEG correlation indices. II. Correlation indices during reading.

OBJECTIVE: To find out whether 14-16 year old reading and writing impaired pupils have atypical EEG activation patterns during reading. METHODS: EEG correlation indices (EEGCIs), based on the waveform characteristics of two EEG signals, were used as measurers of slow joint activation of cortical regions during reading in pupils with reading and writing impairment. RESULTS: Reading was associated with high EEGCIs within the right hemisphere in reading and writing impaired pupils. The finding is analogous to the results of an earlier study [Byring, Electroencephalogr. Clin. Neurophysiol. 63 (1

Acquired dysgraphia in alphabetic and stenographic handwriting.

We report the unusual case of AZO, who professionally used handwritten shorthand writing, and became dysgraphic after a stroke. AZO suffered from a complex cognitive impairment, and part of her spelling errors resulted from damage to auditory input processing, to phonology-orthography conversion procedures and to the ortographic output lexicon. However, analysis of her writing performance showed that the same variables affected response accuracy in alphabetic and shorthand writing; and, that the same error types, including transpositions, were observed in all tasks in the two types of writing.

Cognitive-linguistic performances of multilingual university students suspected of dyslexia.

High-performing adults with compensated dyslexia pose particular challenges to dyslexia diagnostics. We compared the performance of 20 multilingual Finnish university students with suspected dyslexia with 20 age-matched and education-matched controls on an extensive test battery. The battery tapped various aspects of reading, writing, word retrieval, phonological processing and other cognitive functions relevant for dyslexia. Reading and writing were examined in the two domestic languages, Swedish and Finnish. The most prominent group differences in reading and writing emerged on accuracy meas

Transcranial direct current stimulation enhances motor learning in Parkinson's disease: a randomized controlled trial.

Writing training has shown clinical benefits in Parkinson's disease (PD), albeit with limited retention and insufficient transfer effects. It is still unknown whether anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (atDCS) can boost consolidation in PD and how this interacts with medication. To investigate the effects of training + atDCS versus training + sham stimulation on consolidation of writing skills when ON and OFF medication. Second, to examine the intervention effects on cortical excitability. In this randomized sham-controlled double-blind study, patients underwent writing training (o

Developmental change of prefrontal cortex activity during handwriting tasks in children and adults.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between handwriting and executive function has been explored in numerous studies. However, limited research has focused on the relationship between handwriting and prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity, which underpins executive function and writing processes. Additionally, differences in frontal lobe activity during writing between adults and children remain inadequately understood. This study aimed to investigate developmental changes in the prefrontal cortex and their neural basis during writing activities in children and adults. METHODS: In this study, a pen tablet
