Common celiaco-mesenterico-phrenic trunk and renal vascular variations.

The knowledge of vascular variations like other anatomical variations, is important during the operative, diagnostic, and endovascular procedures in abdomen. This report describes multiple variations in the upper abdominal vessels as found during the routine dissection in a 60-year-old male cadaver. The variations found were; presence of a celiaco-mesenterico-phrenic trunk, a common inferior phrenic trunk, 2 right renal arteries originating from abdominal aorta, 2 suprarenal arteries originating from the lower right renal artery, 3 right renal veins opening separately into inferior vena cava,

[Surgical treatment of hand deformities in multiple enchondromatosis: a case report].

Multiple enchondromatosis (Ollier's disease) is a rare disease characterized by widespread enchondromas. In general, the short tubular bones of the hand are involved, with progressive lesions resulting in cosmetic problems and functional deformities. Diaphysectomy and reconstruction with structural autografts or allografts are usually recommended in the treatment of extensive enchondromas involving the fingers. Curettage and grafting and ray amputation are other surgical procedures that can be applied depending on the severity of involvement. A 25-year-old woman with enchondromatosis presented

Colostomy in anorectal malformations: a procedure with serious but preventable complications.

PURPOSE: Colostomy for patients with anorectal malformations decompresses an obstructed colon, avoids fecal contamination of the urinary tract, and protects a future perineal operation. The procedure is associated with several significant complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of 1700 cases of anorectal malformations were retrospectively reviewed. A total of 230 patients underwent reconstruction without a colostomy. Of the remaining 1470 patients, 1420 had their colostomy performed at another institution (group A) and 50 did at our institution (group B) using a specific tec

Burkitt lymphoma in a child with Joubert syndrome.

Joubert syndrome is a rare disorder, characterized by hypoplasia, or aplasia of the cerebellar vermis, hypotonia, ataxia, and psychomotor retardation. The molecular basis underlying the disease is still unknown. There are various syndromes, which are associated with malignancies. Previously known associations between Joubert syndrome and tumors, are benign soft tissue tumors of the tongue and laryngeal lymphangioma. This report describes a 17-year-old boy known with Joubert syndrome, who was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma. The boy received chemotherapy, which successfully induced complete rem

A case of mitochondrial myopathy and cleft palate.

OBJECTIVE: To present a child born with both mitochondrial myopathy and cleft palate, outlining medical complications of this dual diagnosis-the first reported case in English literature. METHODS: A preterm Caucasian boy presented to the cleft palate clinic at birth for evaluation of a secondary cleft palate. Multiple anomalies were also identified, including rib fusions, ventricular septal dyskinesis, and mild hypotonia. Initial chromosome studies were unremarkable. RESULTS: After a multidisciplinary preoperative clearance at 11 months old, the infant underwent palatoplasty and muscle biops

An unusual cause of lower back pain: uterus didelphys and unilateral cervical atresia.

Backache among adolescents and young women is an unusual presenting feature to the Accident and Emergency Department as well as orthopaedic clinics. Here, we present a challenging case of a mullerian duct abnormality, which collectively has an incidence of 0.0001% of the population, and how its consideration and investigation will ensure optimum management in both acute and long-term.

The genetics of Fraser syndrome and the blebs mouse mutants.

Fraser syndrome is a recessive multisystem disorder characterized by embryonic epidermal blistering, cryptophthalmos, syndactyly, renal defects and a range of other developmental abnormalities. More than 17 years ago, the family of four mapped mouse blebs mutants was proposed as models of this disorder, given their striking phenotypic overlaps. In the last few years, these loci have been cloned, uncovering a family of three large extracellular matrix proteins and an intracellular adapter protein which are required for normal epidermal adhesion early in development. The proteins have also been

Hemihyperplasia with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome like skin changes.

Hemihyperplasia is a condition characterized by asymmetric overgrowth of one or more body parts. It may be an isolated finding or may be associated with various syndromes like Beckwith-Weidemann syndrome, Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome, Proteus syndrome etc. Pigmentary skin lesions and capillary malformations are commonly seen in cases of hemihyperplasia. We report a case of hemihyperplasia with associated skin hyperextensibility, varicose veins, skin fragility, easy bruising and papery scars, on the side of hyperplasia. This is the first report of association of isolated hemihyperplasia wit

Hemihypertrophy, renal dysplasia and benign nephromegaly.

Hemihypertrophy is associated with malignant visceral abdominal neoplasms in childhood. Benign nephromegaly and nephroblastomas are both known to occur with hemihypertrophy; however, association with renal dysplasia has not previously reported. We describe an infant presenting with recurrent haematuria who had segmental hemihypertrophy, ipsilateral renal dysplasia and contralateral benign nephromegaly. Although debated, renal dysplasia may predispose to and predate malignant change. Rational management and optimal surveillance of renal dysplasia and benign nephromegaly in hemihypertrophy is di

Acrofacial dysostosis type Rodríguez.

The acrofacial dysostoses (AFD) are a clinically and causally heterogeneous group of conditions characterized by mandibulofacial dysostosis and a variety of limb anomalies. Several abnormalities affecting different internal organs and the central nervous system (CNS) have been described. Depending on the type of limb defects, two major groups have been delineated: (1) with predominantly pre-axial anomalies, Nager type AFD, and (2) with predominantly post-axial involvement, Genee-Wiedemann form of AFD, also known as POADS, respectively. Other forms of "true AFD" have been described as Kelly, Re

Segmentation anomalies of vertebrae and ribs with other abnormalities of blastogenesis: syndromes or associations?

On the basis of two recently studied human fetuses and the historical records and remnant 19th century skeletons in the Museum Vrolik in Amsterdam, we have begun an analysis of an unusual form of somite dysgenesis. This disorder includes vertebral and costal segmentation defects with or without (distal) limb malformation and deformities, anogenital anomalies, unusual colonic atresia, abdominal wall and diaphragmatic defect, Central nervous system abnormality with large head, and severe neurohypotrophic lower limb deformities. This study suggests the existence of an axial vertebral/costal dysge

Isolated cervical esophageal duplication: a rarity.

Duplication of alimentary canal is a well-known entity seen commonly in the abdomen and the thorax. Esophageal duplications are the second most common ones after the ideal duplications, but those in the neck are rarer-only 8 cases have been seen earlier. Cervical esophageal duplication in its isolated form causing torticollis and other chronic pressure symptoms has not been reported previously. Here, the authors present a 3-year-old male patient who had cystic duplication of the esophagus in the neck associated with the cervical vertebral defect and Horner syndrome. The authors hereby discuss

Endobronchial stenting in a two-month-old infant with bronchial compression secondary to tetralogy of Fallot and absent pulmonary valve.

Bronchial compression due to pulmonary artery dilation is an important problem in infants with congenital heart disease, and can complicate the postoperative course. In recent years, airway stenting has become a popular treatment for these cases. We achieved success with endobronchial stenting in a two-month-old infant with bronchial compression caused by a dilated pulmonary artery.

Coronary artery obstruction due to membranous ridge of the right sinus valsalva associated with Tetralogy of Fallot: syncope mimics anoxic spell.

We report an infant with Tetralogy of Fallot who had suffered from repetitive attacks of syncope without obvious cyanosis. Careful observation by means of echocardiography and angiography revealed that the attacks resulted from acute coronary artery obstruction due to membranous ridge covering the sinus Valsalva. Surgical resection of the abnormal ridge and repair of Tetralogy of Fallot successfully improved the patient's symptoms. Syncope in children should be extensively investigated to exclude obstruction of the coronary arteries.
