Minimally invasive and inexpensive percutaneous abscess drainage using an indwelling needle cannula.

PURPOSE: Abscess is still a formidable disease and requires adequate drainage. Moreover, drainage in the head and neck area needs cosmetic care, especially in the pediatric population. In this report, we introduce our method of percutaneous abscess drainage using an indwelling needle cannula. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ten pediatric and five adult patients with cervical and/or facial abscess treated with this drainage method were retrospectively reviewed. Using an indwelling needle cannula (18-14 G Surflow®, Terumo, Tokyo, Japan), abscesses were penetrated under ultrasonic examination. Once purule

Evaluation and management of perianal abscess and anal fistula: SICCR position statement.

Perianal sepsis is a common condition ranging from acute abscess to chronic anal fistula. In most cases, the source is considered to be a non-specific cryptoglandular infection starting from the intersphincteric space. Surgery is the main treatment and several procedures have been developed, but the risks of recurrence and of impairment of continence still seem to be an unresolved issue. This statement reviews the pertinent literature and provides evidence-based recommendations to improve individualized management of patients.

Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma of the Anterior Maxilla Mimicking a Chronic Apical Abscess.

Non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) are malignant neoplasms of the lymphatic system, typically occurring in the fifth through seventh decades of life. Tumors develop from abnormal lymphocyte proliferation and accumulation. Although a majority of NHLs occur in nodal regions, 40% of cases appear in extranodal sites involving the stomach, spleen, Waldeyer's ring, central nervous system, lung, skin, and bone. Extranodal NHL presents a diagnostic challenge because it may mimic endodontic disease when occurring in intraosseous and soft tissue sites. This case report presents misdiagnosis of a diffuse large

Full-endoscopic debridement and drainage treating spine infection and psoas muscle abscess.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, full-endoscopic debridement and drainage (FEDD) is gaining popularity treating spondylodiscitis. Comparing to tradition open surgery, FEDD possess many advantages including lower anesthesia risk and minimally invasiveness. In this study, we report our surgical technique of FEDD and preliminary clinical outcome in 34 consecutive patients with minimum 12 months follow-up. METHODS: In our institute, "early intervention and minimally invasive surgery" is our primary strategy to treat spine infection. Surgical approaches of FEDD include transforaminal and interlaminar

Aortic Root Dilatation With Healed Aortic Root Abscess, Asymptomatic for 41 Years.

A 61-year-old patient presented to us with complaints of mild fever, rhinorrhea, sneezing, and dry cough. On auscultation, there was harsh vesicular breath sound with bilateral audible wheezing but no crackles. Also, a soft high-pitched early diastolic decrescendo murmur in third intercostal space on the left side, typical of aortic regurgitation (AR) was heard. History revealed that in 1976 he was diagnosed with AR and later in 1990 he was diagnosed with aortic root dilatation (AoD) with healed aortic root abscess (ARA). He had no history of infective endocarditis and has remained asymptomati

[Aortic Valve Translocation for Severe Prosthetic Valve Endocarditis with Aortic Annular Abscess].

We report a case of successful aortic valve translocation in a 71-year-old man with severe prosthetic valve endocarditis and an aortic annular abscess. Six years earlier, the patient had undergone aortic valve replacement for aortic regurgitation and coronary artery bypass grafting to the left anterior descending artery with a saphenous vein. Moreover, 4 years earlier, he had undergone total arch replacement for chronic aortic dissection. He was admitted to our hospital with suspected urinary tract infection. Despite antibiotic therapy, the patient developed a high fever. Transthoracic echocar

Mechanical Prosthetic Valve Sparing for Aortic Root Abscess Complicated by Infective Endocarditis.

Aortic root abscess complicated by infective endocarditis of a mechanical prosthetic valve is associated with morbidity and death. We retrospectively report our experience with a valve-sparing technique for managing this condition. From October 2014 through November 2017, 41 patients at our center underwent surgery for aortic root abscess complicated by infective endocarditis of a mechanical prosthetic valve. Twenty (48.7%) met prespecified criteria for use of our valve-sparing technique after careful assessment of the mechanical valve and surrounding tissues. Our technique involved draining t

Sub-galeal abscess: A rare sequel of an infected scalp sebaceous cyst.

INTRODUCTION: Subgaleal abscess is a rare condition in which suppuration under the galea aponeurotica (epicranial aponeurosis) occurs. Diagnosis of subgaleal abscess is guided by high index of suspicion, imaging of the head by computed topography will confirm the diagnosis and detect osteomyelitis or intracranial extension. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We describe a case of extensive subgaleal abscess that presented as an infected scalp sebaceous cyst, in male diabetic patient, its management and the role of vaccum assisted closure (V.A.C.) dressing which was never described in such atypical present

False vocal cord perforation with abscess treated by negative pressure wound therapy.

Perforation of the larynx is very rare but may result in severe airway complications that include pneumothorax, pneumonia, mediastinitis, and retropharyngeal abscess. If conservative treatment fails, aggressive treatments including reconstructive surgery with pedicle flap are considered. Negative pressure wound therapy has been used for large skin defects, necrotizing fasciitis, pharyngocutaneous fistula, stoma dehiscence, osteoradionecrosis of the mandible, chyle fistula, flap failure, and lymphangioma in the field of head and neck surgery. We report a case of false vocal cord perforation wit

Xpert MTB/RIF for diagnosis of tubercular liver abscess. A case series.

Hepatic involvement is an infrequent manifestation of abdominal tuberculosis and could occur in form of granulomatous hepatitis, nodular involvement or abscess formation. Tubercular liver abscess (TLA) is uncommon, and diagnosing this entity is a challenge. Xpert MTB/RIF (Cepheid, Sunnyvale, CA, USA) assay has been widely used for diagnosing pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and lymph nodal tuberculosis. Its utility in some forms of other extrapulmonary TB has also been studied. The role of Xpert MTB/RIF for diagnosis of tubercular liver abscess is not known. Here we present a series of four 4 cases

Rare aetiology of abdominal pain: contained abscess secondary to perforated jejunal diverticulitis.

A patient with a history of multiple jejunal diverticulosis (JD) presented with a non-peritonitic abdominal pain and leucocytosis. CT scan showed a thick-walled interloop collection within the left mid-abdomen with dilated bowels and mild diffuse air-fluid levels. Exploratory laparotomy revealed multiple diverticular outpouchings in the mid-jejunum, one of which was perforated, contained within the mesentery. Resection of the contained abscess and primary anastomosis were performed subsequently.

A unique case of Rhizopus oryzae brain abscess treated with intracavitary amphotericin.

Here we present a case of a poorly controlled diabetic who developed extensive rhinocerebral mucormycosis. Systemic and intrathecal amphotericin were not able to improve his life threatening infection. Therefore, salvage therapy with intracavitary amphotericin B deoxycholate was used to instill antifungal therapy directly into the patient's brain abscess. For proper dosing of intracavitary amphotericin B deoxycholate, we devised a formula which can be theoretically applied for all intracavitary therapies. Unfortunately, the patient's family withdrew care 6 days after starting intracavitary amp

Paraglottic and Pre-epiglottic Space Abscess in Adults: Report of Two Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Acute epiglottitis or supraglottitis is a rapidly progressing upper respiratory tract infection that can often threaten the airway patency. Epiglottic abscess that expands to the paraglottic (PGS) or preepiglottic (PES) space and acute airway obstruction constitute rare complications, exclusively presented in adults. CASE REPORT: We report two cases. In the first case flexible fiberoptic Rhino-Pharyngo-Laryngoscopy showed epiglottitis that was obstructing the airway and abscesses on the lingual surface of the epiglottis. Abscesses were opened using laser CO2. In the following da

Worm-like appearance of Listeria monocytogenes brain abscess: presentation of three cases.

Brain abscess caused by Listeria monocytogenes (LM) is a rare, yet serious condition with high mortality if not recognized and treated timely. We present a series of three cases of LM brain abscesses and describe their characteristic radiological appearances which can be considered very typical. LM abscesses frequently present as markedly irregular formations, revealing characteristic worm-like tubular pattern of chaotic curvilinear arrangement. Knowledge of this imaging pattern can be very helpful in early recognition of LM abscesses whose initial differential diagnosis can often be misleadin
