Intoxication During Physical Sexual Victimization of Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent substance use significantly increases the risk of sexual victimization, as intoxication often renders young people, particularly girls, more vulnerable to sexual assault. However, the relationship between substance use and sexual victimization may also stem from broader lifestyle patterns and behaviors. For instance, adolescents who consume alcohol may be more inclined to seek excitement and engage in activities that increase their susceptibility to victimization, even when not intoxicated. METHODS: A nationally representative survey sample of Finnish ninth graders was

Dual use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes is associated with higher diastolic blood pressure in adolescents: The School*Vape*Science study.

BACKGROUND: E-cigarette use is increasing significantly worldwide, particularly among young people. However, the cardiovascular impact of nicotine exposure during adolescence remains unclear. Although cigarette and e-cigarette use are known to increase arterial stiffness in adults, data from younger populations are lacking. Early vascular alterations may indicate a premature cardiovascular risk. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, we assessed arterial stiffness and central hemodynamics using the Mobil-O-Graph device (IEM GmbH). Smoking and vaping behaviors were evaluated using standardized q

Cognitive training via mobile app for addressing eating disorder-related cognitions in the general adolescent population: Randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, are complex, distressing and debilitating disorders that affect a significant proportion of adolescents. Maladaptive beliefs about eating and body image are well-established cognitive risk factors for the development and maintenance of EDs; therefore, targeting these beliefs is an important component of prevention programs. This randomized trial evaluated the effects of a cognitive behavioral framework-based mobile application designed to reduce vulnerability to EDs by targeting associated maladaptive beliefs.

Parental Monitoring and Parent-Adolescent Relationship Quality in New Delhi, India.

INTRODUCTION: Parental monitoring processes, including parents' efforts to gather information about adolescents' activities, peers, and whereabouts, along with adolescents' disclosure of this information, are critical mechanisms through which parents socialize youth. Yet, existing work primarily examines parental monitoring in Western contexts. We know less about how parental monitoring unfolds in India, limiting our understanding of how familial, cultural, and societal factors shape parents' regulation of their youth's activities, peers, and whereabouts. Finally, extant research has largely f

Functional connectivity patterns of the fronto-parietal and cingulo-opercular networks demonstrate distinct associations with individual differences in cognitive control during early adolescence.

Cognitive control refers to a set of mental processes that enable individuals to flexibly and adaptively engage in goal-directed behavior. Adolescence is characterized by the emergence and subsequent rapid development of adult-like cognitive control abilities, and as such, there is great interest in understanding the neural basis of this maturational process. The goal of the present study was to investigate how the resting-state and task-based functional connectivity (FC) patterns of two brain networks implicated in control processes, the fronto-parietal network (FPN) and the cingulo-opercular

Alterations of telomere length and mitochondrial DNA copy number in depressive adolescents with non-suicidal self-injury.

BACKGROUND: NSSI among adolescents is highly prevalent and serves as a significant indicator of subsequent suicidal ideation and behaviors. Recent studies have demonstrated a connection between accelerated cellular aging and a range of psychiatric conditions. The present study explored whether depressive adolescents with NSSI exhibited alterations in telomere length (TL) and mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn), both critical markers of cellular aging. METHODS: The study comprised 70 depressive adolescents with NSSI (84.3 % female) and 34 depressive adolescents without NSSI (61.8 % female)

Body, image, and digital technology in adolescence and contemporary youth culture.

The physical, psychological and social changes that occur during adolescence constitute a physiological crisis that is necessary for development and growth. The establishment of a suitable "self-image" is important for facilitating harmonious psychophysical development during this time. In the current era, digital technology (DT) serves as an extraordinary means of communication for young people, who make significant use of images as a mode of expression. Accordingly, there is growing interest in the relationship between physical development, self-image and use of DT. A review of the published

The Relationship Between Loneliness and Internet or Smartphone Addiction Among Adolescents: A Systematic Review and meta-Analysis.

Background: Loneliness is a common public health problem that influences people's physical and mental health. There is a high incidence of loneliness in adolescents. Some research suggested that smartphone or Internet addiction (SA or IA) may be a factor. But the relationship between loneliness and SA or IA is not completely clear among adolescents. We aim to estimate the correlation coefficient r between them. Methods: Databases, consisting of PubMed and Web of Science, were retrieved systematically for studies of the association between adolescents' loneliness and SA or IA. The Newcastle-Ott

Adolescent sleep defects and dopaminergic hyperactivity in mice with a schizophrenia-linked Shank3 mutation.

Shank3 is a shared risk gene for autism spectrum disorders and schizophrenia. Sleep defects have been characterized for autism models with Shank3 mutations; however, evidence has been lacking for the potential sleep defects caused by Shank3 mutation associated with schizophrenia and how early in development these defects may occur. Here we characterized the sleep architecture of adolescent mice carrying a schizophrenia-linked, R1117X mutation in Shank3. We further employed GRABDA dopamine sensor and fiber photometry to record dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens during sleep/wake states.

Inpatient Treatment Outcome in a Large Sample of Adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa is an illness affecting primarily adolescent girls and young women. Clinical guidelines recommend early intervention, with inpatient treatment for more severe cases. We present an evaluation of a multi-modal cognitive-behavioral inpatient treatment (CBT-E) involving carers in specialized units for adolescents. Routine data of 962 adolescent inpatients (26 boys) (mean age 15.48 [1.26]; range 12-17 years) were analyzed. Predictors of good body weight outcome (achieving a discharge BMI of at least 18.5 kg/m2) were identified by logistic regression analysis. Mean inpatient treatme

Exercise in Adolescence Enhances Callosal White Matter Refinement in the Female Brain in a Rat Model of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

A total of 1 in 20 infants born annually are exposed to alcohol prenatally, which disrupts neurodevelopment and results in several disorders categorized under the umbrella term Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). Children and adolescents affected by FASD exhibit delayed maturation of cerebral white matter, which contributes to deficits in executive function, visuospatial processing, sensory integration, and interhemispheric communication. Research using animal models of FASD have uncovered that oligoglia proliferation, differentiation, and survival are vulnerable to alcohol teratogenesis

Isolation driven changes in Iba1-positive microglial morphology are associated with social recognition memory in adults and adolescents.

Microglia are critical for regulation of neuronal circuits that mature from adolescence to adulthood. The morphological complexity and process length of microglia can indicate different activation states. These states are sensitive to a variety of environmental and stress conditions. Microglia are sensitive to many factors that also regulate social behavior, and in turn, microglial manipulations can impact social function. Brief social isolation is one factor that can lead to robust social changes. Here, we explored the role of microglia in the effects of brief social isolation on social recog

Longitudinal maturation of resting state networks: Relevance to sustained attention and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

The transition from childhood to adolescence involves important neural function, cognition, and behavior changes. However, the links between maturing brain function and sustained attention over this period could be better understood. This study examined typical changes in network functional connectivity over childhood to adolescence, developmental differences in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and how functional connectivity might underpin variability in sustained attention development in a longitudinal sample. A total of 398 resting state scans were collected from 173 childre
