Onset of action of various migraine prophylactics.

Four studies were pooled to study the onset of action of three pharmacologically different migraine prophylactics: flunarizine, pizotifen and propranolol. Inter-drug differences in reduction of baseline attack frequency were subjected to analysis of variance. At months 1, 2, and 3 the inter-drug differences in number of patients showing a first 50% decrease in attack rate were subjected to the Chi-square test. Both tests showed that there were no significant differences in onset of action between the three drugs. It is concluded that migraine responds to flunarizine and to other commonly used

Measuring determinants of occupational health related behavior in Flemish farmers: an application of the Theory of Planned Behavior.

PROBLEM: Preventive interventions to reduce occupational injuries and health problems in farmers require the identification of factors that contribute to unsafe and health damaging behavior. This paper describes the development and validation of a self-report questionnaire, which measures the determinants of occupational health-related behaviors in farmers. METHOD: A representative sample of 283 Flemish farmers completed a provisional 135 item questionnaire based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, measuring four behaviors related to occupational health (machinery use, animal handling, prevent

Association between circulating leukocytes and arrhythmias: Mendelian randomization analysis in immuno-cardiac electrophysiology.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac arrhythmia is a common disease associated with high mortality and morbidity. Circulating leukocyte counts, which serve as a biomarker for assessing systemic immune status, have been linked to arrhythmias in observational studies. However, observational studies are plagued by confounding factors and reverse causality, whether alterations in circulating leukocyte components are causally associated with arrhythmias remains uncertain. The present study explored this question based on genetic evidence. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We performed Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to

Subsyndromes and symptom clusters: Multilevel factor analysis of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia with intensive longitudinal data.

INTRODUCTION: Behavioral and psychological symptoms in dementia (BPSD) are dynamic phenomena with a high amount of intraindividual variability. We applied a multilevel framework to identify subsyndromes (between-person factors) that represent clinically relevant profiles of BPSD and identify symptom clusters (within-person factors) that represent contextually driven daily symptom experiences. METHODS: This study used an intensive longitudinal design in which 68 co-residing family caregivers to persons living with dementia were recruited to proxy report on their care recipient's daily symptom

A comparative study of mandibular changes induced by rapid maxillary expansion vs sagittal-guided Twin-block therapy during the mixed dentition period.

INTRODUCTION: It is generally accepted that the optimal timing for functional orthodontic treatment in patients with Class II malocclusion and mandibular retrusion is during the circumpubertal growth period (cervical vertebral maturation stage [CS] 3-CS4). However, these patients often present with excessive overjet and a retrusive facial profile, which compromises esthetics and increases the risk of dental trauma. Early intervention during the mixed dentition period may reduce the risk of dental trauma and help safeguard children's psychological well-being. This study aimed to evaluate the th

Causal impact of human blood metabolites and metabolic pathways on serum uric acid and gout: a mendelian randomization study.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperuricaemia and gout are common metabolic disorders. However, the causal relationships between blood metabolites and serum urate levels, as well as gout, remain unclear. A systematic evaluation of the causal connections between blood metabolites, hyperuricemia, and gout could enhance early screening and prevention of hyperuricemia and gout in clinical settings, providing novel insights and approaches for clinical treatment. METHODS: In this study, we employed a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis utilizing data from a genome-wide association study involving

Attribution of responsibility for alcohol-related offenses.

The present study examined how individuals attribute responsibility for alcohol-related offenses. Subjects were classified into 4 groups based on the type of consequences they received for their alcohol use and were asked to complete 2 measures of causal attributions following each of 2 scenarios which depicted different severities of outcome of alcohol-related offenses. Using a 2-way multiple analysis of variance the 2 x 4 repeated-measures design indicated no significant difference between groups based on consequences. A significant difference was found for severity of outcome suggesting ind

Immune cell phenotype in endometrial cancer: from biological significance to clinical utility using Mendelian randomisation analysis.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the relationship between immune cells and endometrial cancer by conducting a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomisation (MR) analysis. METHODS: MR uses genetic variation as an instrumental variable to study the causal effects of exposure on observed data outcomes. We conducted a dual-sample MR analysis to investigate the causal relationship between 731 immune cell phenotypes and endometrial cancer (EC). The weighted-median method and inverse variance weighted method MR were mainly used, and the p-value was corrected with the Benjamini-Hochberg procedure. RES

Bidirectional Mendelian randomization to explore the causal relationships between schizophrenia and narcolepsy.

INTRODUCTION: This study employs the Mendelian Randomization (MR) approach to explore the potential causal relationship between schizophrenia and the risk of developing narcolepsy. METHODS: Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) data from European populations were used to identify independent genetic variants associated with schizophrenia and narcolepsy, which were then used as instrumental variables in the analysis. The inverse variance weighting (IVW) method was performed to validate the findings. Effect sizes were presented as odds ratios (OR) and beta coefficients (β). RESULTS: The IVW a

Prevalence and correlates of subjective cognitive decline in older United States military Veterans: Results from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study.

Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) has been associated with increased risk for mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Using data from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study (NHVRS), we examined the prevalence and sociodemographic, health, and psychosocial correlates of SCD among 3001 older US Veterans. Results of a relative importance analysis of statistically significant correlates of SCD revealed that greater severity of insomnia, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and loneliness, as well as lower grit and resilience, accounted for >75% of the explained variance in SCD. Results pr

The prediction of outcome in chronic schizophrenia. IV. The Chestnut Lodge follow-up study.

Predictors of long-term outcome were identified among a sample (n = 163) of largely chronic DSM-III schizophrenic patients (80% ill for more than two years) from the Chestnut Lodge follow-up study using three methods of analysis (correlation, multiple regression, and discriminant function). Predictors accounted for approximately one third of the outcome variance across six outcome dimensions. The following variables regularly (ie, individually and as components in multivariate equations) predicted better global outcome: less family history of schizophrenia, better premorbid instrumental functi

Sonographic classification of idiopathic clubfoot according to severity.

Our purpose was to develop a sonographic technique for clubfoot examination using measured angles to establish a classification system according to severity. Ultrasonography of 24 newborns with 32 clubfeet and 13 newborns with 22 normal feet was performed and measurements obtained. Analysis of components of variance was conducted. Patients with clubfeet showed higher dispersion in 95% confidence intervals for all angles than did patients with normal feet. A sonographic classification system was established: IIa, slight clubfoot; IIb, moderate clubfoot; IIc, severe clubfoot; IId, very severe cl

Discriminant validity of the Wender Utah Rating Scale for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in adults.

The authors examined the factor structure and discriminant validity of the Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS) in adults seeking evaluation for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Three factors (Dysthymia, Oppositional/Defiant Behavior, and School Problems) accounted for 59.4% of the variance. In a stepwise discriminant function analysis, age and childhood school problems emerged as significant variables. The classification procedure correctly classified 64.5% of patients. Among those who did not have ADHD, only 57.5% were correctly classified compared with 72.1% among those with ADHD

Complete blood count-derived myeloid-lymphoid inflammatory phenotype in rheumatoid arthritis complicated by acute myocardial infarction: an age- and sex-balanced retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with excess cardiovascular morbidity, including acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Routine complete blood count (CBC)-derived inflammatory indices are clinically accessible, but their value for characterizing cardiovascular comorbidity in RA remains incompletely defined. We examined whether CBC-derived markers form a coordinated myeloid-lymphoid inflammatory phenotype associated with AMI in patients with RA. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 110 healthy controls, 246 consecutive patients with RA without AMI, and 90 consecutive patients wi
