New insights into the ear region anatomy and cranial blood supply of advanced stem Strepsirhini: evidence from three primate petrosals from the Eocene of Chambi, Tunisia.

We report the discovery of three isolated primate petrosal fragments from the fossiliferous locality of Chambi (Tunisia), a primate-bearing locality dating from the late early to the early middle Eocene. These fossils display a suite of anatomical characteristics otherwise found only in strepsirhines, and as such might be attributed either to Djebelemur or/and cf. Algeripithecus, the two diminutive stem strepsirhine primates recorded from this locality. Although damaged, the petrosals provide substantial information regarding the ear anatomy of these advanced stem strepsirhines (or pre-tooth-c

Two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiography alone can adequately define preoperative anatomy and hemodynamic status before repair of complete atrioventricular septal defect in infants < 1 year old.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess the ability of two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiography alone, without cardiac catheterization, to evaluate infants < 1 year of age for complete open heart repair of complete balanced atrioventricular (AV) septal defect. BACKGROUND: Two-dimensional echocardiographic-Doppler examinations provide accurate anatomic detail in patients with AV septal defect. Lung biopsy data have shown that patients rarely develop significant inoperable pulmonary vascular disease before 7 months of age. Although calculated pulmonary arteriolar resistance is often elevated in you

New Terminologia Anatomica: cranium and extracranial bones of the head.

In 2019, the updated and extended version of Terminologia Anatomica was published by the Federative International Programme for Anatomical Terminology (FIPAT). This new edition uses more precise and adequate anatomical names compared to its predecessors. Nevertheless, numerous terms have been modified, which poses a challenge to those who prefer traditional anatomical names, i.e. medical students, teachers, clinicians and their instructors. Therefore, there is a need to popularise this new edition of terminology and explain these recent changes. The anatomy of the head, including the cranium,

[The anatomical and histological investigation of the pancreas in the 19th century and till the discovery of insulin (1921). 2. The pancreas research from the discovery of islets (1869) till the discovery of pancreas-diabetes (1889) (author's transl)].

In this study is the period of the morphological exploration of the pancreas from the discovery of islets of LANGERHANS (1869) to the discovery of pancreas-diabetes through von MERING and MINKOWSKI (1889) investigated. In his thesis has PAUL LANGERHANS the islets of pancreas and the centro-acinar cells described. In the period from 1869 to 1889 has the majority of investigators the opinion that the islets are parts of the lymphatic system. In the other hand investigators have the opinion that islets are parts of pancreatic ducts or residues of the embryonic period. RENAUT (1879) makes it possi

Departing from standard practices: Strategic application of value engineering in the anatomy laboratory to enhance formaldehyde extraction using high-impact, low-cost, and low-maintenance solutions.

This study describes the process of developing a high-impact, low-cost, and low-maintenance air ventilation system for anatomy facilities. It employed the strategic application of Value Engineering (VE), assuring that the air ventilation system meets contemporary threshold limit values (TLVs) for formaldehyde in the working zone of dissection tables. A creative-innovative construction methodology was used, combining the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ/TIPS) and VE for an anatomy laboratory air ventilation concept. The TRIZ/TIPS aimed to resolve conflicts that impeded progress toward

Anatomy of soft body of Pugilina cochlidium (Linnaeus, 1758) and P. erecta (Vermeij & Raben, 2009) (Neogastropoda: Melongenidae) from Thondi Coast-Palk Bay in Tamil Nadu, India.

The species of Pugilina cochlidium (Linnaeus, 1758) and P. erecta (Vermeij & Raben, 2009) has been studied in the present study. The female can be differentiated from the male by the absence of the cephalic penis and a complicated genital aparatus visible through the mantle skirt in both the sexes. In other aspects of the external features of female are quite to males. In both species the digestive system was similar with few differences in structure between each other. It consists of buccal mass, proboscis, salivary glands, accessory salivary glands, oesophagus, stomach, intestine, rectum and

Re-interpreting mesenteric vascular anatomy on 3D virtual and/or physical models: positioning the middle colic artery bifurcation and its relevance to surgeons operating colon cancer.

BACKGROUND: The impact of the position of the middle colic artery (MCA) bifurcation and the trajectory of the accessory MCA (aMCA) on adequate lymphadenectomy when operating colon cancer have as of yet not been described and/or analysed in the literature. The aim of this study was to determine the MCA bifurcation position to anatomical landmarks and to assess the trajectory of aMCA. METHODS: The colonic vascular anatomy was manually reconstructed in 3D from high-resolution CT datasets using Osirix MD and 3-matic Medical and analysed. CT datasets were exported as STL files and supplemented wit

Comparative anatomy of dissected optic lobes, optic ventricles, midbrain tectum, collicular ventricles, and aqueduct: evolutionary modifications as potential explanation for non-tumoral aqueductal anomalies in humans.

PURPOSE: An extensive literature has postulated multiple etiologies for aqueductal stenosis. No publications were found, discussing that evolutionary modifications might explain aqueductal anomalies. This study's objectives were to review the evolutionary modifications of vertebrates' tectum structures that might explain human aqueduct anomalies. Undertaking vertebrate comparative study is currently not feasible in view of limitations in obtaining vertebrate material. Thus, vertebrate material collected, injected, dissected, and radiographed in the early 1970s was analyzed, focusing on the aqu

Editorial Commentary: Why We Have To Respect The Anatomy In Acromioclavicular Joint Surgery And Why Clinical Shoulder Scores Might Not Give Us The Information We Need!

Over the past decade, the interest in acromioclavicular (AC) joint research has experienced a revolutionary increase. Biomechanical and anatomic studies have been carried out to investigate and obtain a better understanding of the function of this joint. The reason for this huge investigational effort is the fact that we do not have any gold standard for the treatment, diagnosis, or follow-up of patients with acute or chronic AC joint injuries. This is reflected by the huge number of over 160 different surgical techniques described in the literature. So far, we have a variety of anatomic proce

New records of the dolphin Albertocetus meffordorum (Odontoceti: Xenorophidae) from the lower Oligocene of South Carolina: Encephalization, sensory anatomy, postcranial morphology, and ontogeny of early odontocetes.

We report five new specimens of xenorophid dolphins from North and South Carolina. Four of the specimens represent the xenorophid Albertocetus meffordorum, previously only known from the holotype skull. The other is a fragmentary petrosal from the upper Oligocene Belgrade Formation that we refer to Echovenator sp, indicating at least two xenorophids from that unit. Two of the Albertocetus meffordorum specimens are from the lower Oligocene Ashley Formation: 1) a partial skeleton with neurocranium, fragmentary mandible, ribs, vertebrae, and chevrons, and 2) an isolated braincase. The partial ver

Anatomy of Shoulder Girdle Muscle Modifications and Walking Adaptation in the Scaly Chinese Pangolin (Manis Pentadactyla Pentadactyla: Pholidota) Compared with the Partially Osteoderm-Clad Armadillos (Dasypodidae).

Because pangolins are unique mammals with a body and limbs almost entirely sheathed in hard keratinous overlapping scales and with digging and climbing abilities, the shoulder girdle muscles may differ significantly from those of other mammals including the partially osteoderm-clad armadillos. Therefore, we conducted a functional anatomical study of the shoulder girdle muscles in Chinese pangolins (Manis pentadactyla pentadactyla, Pholidota) and some armadillo species (Dasypodidae). Our CT scans revealed that the pangolin's overlapping scales are hard structures completely encasing the limbs.

Gadolinium-enhanced three-dimensional magnetic resonance angiographic assessment of the pulmonary artery anatomy in cyanotic congenital heart disease with pulmonary stenosis or atresia: comparison with cineangiography.

Pulmonary stenosis (PS) or pulmonary atresia (PA) is an important component of complex cyanotic congenital heart disease, especially in tetralogy of Fallot or lesions with ventricular septal defect (VSD)-PS physiology. Management strategy in these patients depends on accurate assessment of PAs and identification of all sources of pulmonary blood flow. X-ray cineangiography is the "gold standard" for this purpose, but it has the inherent risks of an invasive procedure. Gadolinium-enhanced three-dimensional magnetic resonance angiography (Gd-MRA) has been shown to noninvasively and accurately ev

Correlative anatomy for thoracic inlet; glottis and subglottis; trachea, carina, and main bronchi; lobes, fissures, and segments; hilum and pulmonary vascular system; bronchial arteries and lymphatics.

Because it is relatively inexpensive and universally available, standard radiographs of the thorax should still be viewed as the primary screening technique to look at the anatomy of intrathoracic structures and to investigate airway or pulmonary disorders. Modern trained thoracic surgeons must be able to correlate surgical anatomy with what is seen on more advanced imaging techniques, however, such as CT or MRI. More importantly, they must be able to recognize the indications, capabilities, limitations, and pitfalls of these imaging methods.

Successful extraction of a large airway foreign body using flexible bronchoscopy and electrocautery snare in a post-COVID-19 patient with difficult airway anatomy: a case report.

A 64-year-old man presented with a 10-cm metal spoon handle retained in his airway for 40 years-a rare case of chronic foreign body aspiration in an adult. The condition was further complicated by post-COVID-19 respiratory symptoms and challenging airway anatomy, including a short thyromental distance and Mallampati Class IV classification. The patient complained of persistent chest tightness, shortness of breath, and recurrent respiratory issues that persisted after recovering from COVID-19. Initial attempts at removal using rigid bronchoscopy (RB) failed due to anatomical limitations. Howeve

The clinical value of spectral computed tomography reconstruction technology for the anatomy of the superior mesenteric artery in laparoscopic radical right hemicolectomy for colon cancer: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The superior mesenteric artery (SMA) has numerous branches and a high rate of anatomical variation, making it challenging to manage during surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of dual energy computed tomography (CT) three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction combined with arteriovenous image fusion technology for assessing SMA variations. The goal is to aid in surgical planning for laparoscopic radical resection of right colon cancer, using the SMA as the primary surgical approach. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of clinical and imaging data from pa
