Linking L2 proficiency and patterns of functional connectivity during L1 word retrieval.

Second language (L2) learners differ greatly in language proficiency, which is partially explained by variability in native language (L1) skills. The present fMRI study explored the neural underpinnings of the L1-L2 link. Twenty L2 learners completed a tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) task that required retrieving words in L1. Low-proficiency L2 learners showed greater functional connectivity for correct and TOT responses between the left inferior frontal gyrus and right-sided homologues of the temporoparietal regions that support phonological processing (e.g., supramarginal gyrus), possibly reflecting

Functional coupling between CA3 and laterobasal amygdala supports schema dependent memory formation.

The medial temporal lobe drives semantic congruence dependent memory formation. However, the exact roles of hippocampal subfields and surrounding brain regions remain unclear. Here, we used an established paradigm and high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging of the medial temporal lobe together with cytoarchitectonic probability estimates in healthy humans. Behaviorally, robust congruence effects emerged in young and older adults, indicating that schema dependent learning is unimpaired during healthy aging. Within the medial temporal lobe, semantic congruence was associated with h

Encoding of contextual fear memory in hippocampal-amygdala circuit.

In contextual fear conditioning, experimental subjects learn to associate a neutral context with an aversive stimulus and display fear responses to a context that predicts danger. Although the hippocampal-amygdala pathway has been implicated in the retrieval of contextual fear memory, the mechanism by which fear memory is encoded in this circuit has not been investigated. Here, we show that activity in the ventral CA1 (vCA1) hippocampal projections to the basal amygdala (BA), paired with aversive stimuli, contributes to encoding conditioned fear memory. Contextual fear conditioning induced sel

Student Practice Opportunities in Core Mathematics Instruction: Exploring for a Goldilocks Effect for Kindergartners With Mathematics Difficulties.

Opportunities for practice play a critical role in learning complex behaviors. In the context of explicit mathematics instruction, practice facilitates systematic opportunities for students with mathematics difficulties (MD) to learn new mathematics content and apply such knowledge and skills to novel mathematics problems. This study explored whether there is an optimal amount of student practice that teachers should provide in core mathematics instruction to maximize the mathematics achievement of kindergarten students with MD, a so called "Goldilocks effect," as opposed to simply "more is be

Addressing Disease-Related Stigma During Infectious Disease Outbreaks.

Outbreaks of emerging infectious disease are a constant threat. In the last 10 years, there have been outbreaks of 2009 influenza A (H1N1), Ebola virus disease, and Zika virus. Stigma associated with infectious disease can be a barrier to adopting healthy behaviors, leading to more severe health problems, ongoing disease transmission, and difficulty controlling infectious disease outbreaks. Much has been learned about infectious disease and stigma in the context of nearly 4 decades of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome pandemic. In this paper, we define s

Apoptosis of mouse hippocampal cells induced by Taenia crassiceps metacestode factor.

Seizures, headache, depression and neurological deficits are the signs and symptoms most frequently reported in human neurocysticercosis. However, the cause of the associated learning and memory deficits is unknown. Here, we used Taenia crassiceps infection in mice as a model of human cysticercosis. The effects of T. crassiceps metacestode infection or T. crassiceps metacestode factor (MF) treatment on mouse hippocampal cells were studied; control mice were included. At 45 days after infection or treatment of the mice with MF, all mice were anaesthetized and perfused transcardially with saline

Depressive rumination and the C957T polymorphism of the DRD2 gene.

Depressed individuals who ruminate have difficulties learning from punishment and suppressing task-irrelevant information. The C957T polymorphism of the DRD2 gene, which affects functioning of D2 dopamine receptors (DRD2) that are expressed predominantly in the indirect pathway of the basal ganglia, has been found to influence suppression and punishment learning. Given these associations, we examined in the present study whether depressive rumination is related to the C957T polymorphism in 317 clinically depressed individuals and 317 never-depressed control individuals. A 2 × 2 (diagnostic gro

Best clinical and research practice in pediatric neurology.

Many children with epilepsy experience it as part of a broader disability. The cause is often a developmental, genetic, or early acquired abnormality associated with learning difficulties and impairments in other systems. In addition, it has become increasingly recognized in recent years that even children with so-called idiopathic generalized epilepsies may have specific language or cognitive impairments. The combination of seizures and these factors can form a significant barrier to the child and family in social and emotional terms as well. A child's brain must mature and learn new skills;

Decision-making and risk aversion among depressive adults.

Depression is associated with behavioral avoidance of potentially rewarding environmental contexts. The present study examined the performance of depressive individuals and controls on a neuropsychological measure of decision-making that favors risk avoidance. Depressive (n=41) and control (n=44) participants were administered the Iowa Gambling Task, which measures the ability of participants to maximize earnings by choosing low-risk, low-reward responses over high-risk, high-reward responses. Results provided partial support for the hypothesis that depressive participants would learn to avoid

The psychophysiology of generalized anxiety disorder: 2. Effects of applied relaxation.

Muscle relaxation therapy assumes that generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) patients lack the ability to relax but can learn this in therapy. We tested this by randomizing 49 GAD patients to 12 weeks of Applied Relaxation (AR) or waiting. Before, during, and after treatment participants underwent relaxation tests. Before treatment, GAD patients were more worried than healthy controls (n=21) and had higher heart rates and lower end-tidal pCO2, but not higher muscle tension (A. Conrad, L. Isaac, & W.T. Roth, 2008). AR resulted in greater symptomatic improvement than waiting. However, 28% of the AR

Cognitive-behavioral profiles of neurodegenerative dementias: beyond Alzheimer's disease.

The neurocognitive and behavioral profiles of vascular dementia and vascular cognitive impairment, dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson's disease with dementia, and dementia syndromes associated with frontotemporal lobar degenerations are compared and contrasted with Alzheimer's dementia (AD). Vascular dementia/vascular cognitive impairment is characterized by better verbal memory performance, worse quantitative executive functioning, and prominent depressed mood. Dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson's disease with dementia are equally contrasted with AD by defective processing of visual

Teaching patients to self-inject: pilot study of a treatment for injection anxiety and phobia in multiple sclerosis patients prescribed injectable medications.

Medications are increasingly being developed for chronic illnesses that require regular injection. Usually it is recommended that, if possible, patients learn to inject themselves. Self-injection is associated with better adherence than injection by family or clinics. Yet large numbers of people have difficulty learning to self-inject due to injection anxiety or phobia. We present data from eight patients who went through a manualized 6-week cognitive behavioral treatment designed to increase self-efficacy and reduce anxiety. These patients were diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, were prescrib

Pharmacological enhancement of synaptic efficacy, spatial learning, and memory through carbonic anhydrase activation in rats.

CA1 pyramidal cells were recorded in rat hippocampal slices. In the presence of carbonic anhydrase activators, comicrostimulation of cholinergic inputs from stratum oriens and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic inputs from stratum pyramidale at low intensities switched the hyperpolarizing GABA-mediated inhibitory postsynaptic potentials to depolarizing responses. In the absence of the activators, however, the same stimuli were insufficient to trigger the synaptic switch. This synaptic switch changed the function of the GABAergic synapses from excitation filter to amplifier and was prevented b

[Neurovegetative diseases in dementia].

Dementia is the result of the dysfunction and death of cells in the central and peripheral nervous system. Of diverse etiology, these processes are insidious in their onset and are characterized by a progressive neural depletion resulting in a range of cognitive deficits, including a deterioration in the capacity to learn and a tendency to forget what has been learned. Neurodegenerative diseases resulting in dementia include: Alzheimer, Parkinson, Huntington, Pick, and Creutzfeld Jakob, as well as dementias with multiple etiologies. The population with the highest probability of suffering from

The effect of abnormal intrauterine thyroid hormone economies on infant cognitive abilities.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate how intrauterine and neonatal thyroid hormone deficiencies affect infant cognitive abilities. METHOD: 26 infants with intrauterine or neonatal thyroid hormone deficiency and 20 full-term infants with normal thyroid economies were studied at 6 months of age or corrected age. Reasons for thyroid hormone deficiency were maternal hypothyroidism, maternal hyperthyroidism treated with antithyroid medication, congenital hypothyroidism, and low-risk prematurity. A computer-generated task during which infants' eye-movements were videotaped was used to assess attention, memory, a

Reading and spelling disorders: clinical features and causes.

Developmental dyslexia (specific reading and specific spelling disorder) is thought to stem from specific features in cognitive processing strongly related to biological maturation of the central nervous system which interact with non-biological learning conditions. The specific learning disorder should not be accounted for by mental age, gross neurological deficits, emotional disturbances or inadequate schooling. As a clinical guideline, the child's level in reading and spelling must be significantly below that expected for the population of children of the same mental age. The persistence ra

The use of topographical landmarks to improve the outcome of Agee endoscopic carpal tunnel release.

A modified approach to endoscopic carpal tunnel release has been developed and tested in 60 cadaveric specimens by three surgeons using the Agee endoscopic carpal tunnel release system. The modified approach, which includes specific localization of the hook of the hamate, flexor retinaculum, and the superficial palmar arch utilizing topographical landmarks, avoids entry into Guyon's canal and injury to the ulnar artery and nerve, median nerve, and common digital nerves. Use of the anatomic approach resulted in significantly superior results. There were fewer incomplete releases, and fewer surg

[Cardiac arrest at induction of a patient with thyrotoxicosis. Have you thought of anaphylaxis?].

We report the occurrence of cardiac arrest shortly after the anaesthetic induction for thyroidectomy in a patient with decompensated thyrotoxicosis associated with taking amiodarone. After investigation, it was revealed that the cardiac arrest was linked to an anaphylactic reaction to suxamethonium. This accident, unrelated to hyperthyroidism, reminds us of the relative frequency and severity of anaphylactic reactions related to curare. This event, in the context of severe cardiac insufficiency, due to an amiodarone-associated thyrotoxicosis, is described here for the first time. Its diagnosis
