Nuptial gifts and sexual behavior in two species of spider (Araneae, Trechaleidae, Paratrechalea).

Male delivering of a prey packed in silk as a nuptial gift is rare in spiders and restricted until now to Pisauridae. Here, we describe this behavioral pattern found in two Trechaleidae species, Paratrechalea azul Carico 2005, and Paratrechalea ornata (Mello-Leitão 1943), mainly based on field observations. We observed the following steps of sexual behavior: sperm induction, nuptial gift construction, mate searching, pre-copulatory courtship, copulation, and copulatory ending. In this group, a nuptial gift consists of a prey wrapped in silk, which appears as a white rounded shape. The male car

How have new designs and new types of joint replacement influenced wear behavior?

As the principles of joint arthroplasty become increasingly refined and more widely established, new designs are being developed that require careful evaluation for their propensity to generate wear debris in vivo. In the past several years, new designs intended to improve clinical performance have emerged in both total knee replacement and total spinal disk replacement. Advances in these types of implants have the potential for major clinical impact in the coming decade, due to the large number of patients seeking treatment of knee arthritis as well as back pain, neck pain, and radiculopathy.

Restructuring mood in cyclothymia using cognitive behavior therapy: an intensive time-sampling study.

Hypotheses predicting how cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) would change the daily pattern of mood and sleep in a patient with cyclothymia were formulated based on circadian processes. Using a prospective single-case experimental design, the patient provided mood ratings every 4 hours and sleep reports daily for 49 weeks, including a 4-week baseline, a 20-session CBT intervention, and a follow-up period. Improvements in mood during and after therapy were accounted for by reduced daily mood variability and extended sleep. The patient's energy at different times of day was explained by adjustin

Gambling behavior of student-athletes and a student cohort: what are the odds?

This study investigated the prevalence of gambling, gambling related NCAA violations, and disordered gambling in student-athletes (n = 736) with a comparison cohort of students (n = 1,071) at four universities. Student-athletes reported similar rates of gambling frequency, use of a bookmaker, and disordered gambling as students. After accounting for demographic differences, student-athletes were less likely to engage in sports wagering than students. Several risk factors for disordered gambling were identified, including being male and reporting at least one parent with a history of gambling p

Two- or four-hour lying deprivation on the behavior of lactating dairy cows.

Cows are often temporarily deprived of the opportunity to lie down while waiting for veterinary or reproductive procedures. Sixty cows were deprived of the opportunity to lie down for 0, 2, or 4 h by confining them in pairs in a small indoor pen. Behavior was recorded during deprivation and for 40 h afterwards. In the first 2 and 4 h of the experiment, cows that were not deprived chose to lie down for 70 and 142 min, respectively. When cows were discouraged from lying, they regularly stomped their legs, repositioned themselves, but never lay down. In the 4-h treatment, both stomping and reposi

Depression and suicidal behavior in acne patients treated with isotretinoin: a systematic review.

Isotretinoin (13-cis retinoic acid) is an effective treatment for severe cystic or recalcitrant acne vulgaris; however, concerns have been raised regarding its potential association with depression and suicidal behavior. We sought to explore the proposed relationship between isotretinoin use and the risk of depression and attempted and completed suicide in patients with acne vulgaris by performing a systematic literature search for studies reporting primary data on depression and suicidal behavior in patients treated with isotretinoin for acne vulgaris. Nine studies met the qualifying criteria

Postnatal dietary choline supplementation alters behavior in a mouse model of Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome (RTT), a neurodevelopmental disorder primarily affecting females, is accompanied by behavioral and neuropathological abnormalities and decreases in brain cholinergic markers. Because the cholinergic system is associated with cognitive and motor functions, cholinergic deficits in RTT may underlie some of the behavioral abnormalities. In rodents, increased choline availability during development enhances transmission at cholinergic synapses and improves behavioral performance throughout life. We examined whether choline supplementation of nursing dams would attenuate deficits in Me

Dental caries and oral health behavior in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common developmental disorder. This study tested the hypothesis that children with ADHD exhibit a higher caries prevalence and poorer oral health behavior than children in a control group. Twenty-one children with ADHD and a control group of 79 children, all aged 13 yr, underwent a clinical dental examination and completed two questionnaires on dietary habits and dental hygiene habits. Differences between the groups regarding decayed, missed, or filled surfaces, decayed surfaces, initial caries lesions, and gingival inflammation were non-sig

Efficacy of group cognitive behavior therapy for the treatment of masticatory myofascial pain.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the reduction in perceived pain in patients with myofascial pain (MFP) using a group cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) course. Twenty-six participants diagnosed as having MFP were enrolled. Each CBT session had a small-group format, where participants received instruction in habit reversal, stress management, and progressive relaxation. Participants served as their own control subjects and were surveyed for pain intensity, duration, and frequency at study enrollment, before attending the CBT course, and 2 to 3 weeks after course completion. Further evaluation of emerging speech in children with developmental disabilities: training verbal behavior.

The conceptual basis for many effective language-training programs are based on Skinner's (1957) analysis of verbal behavior. Skinner described several elementary verbal operants including mands, tacts, intraverbals, and echoics. According to Skinner, responses that are the same topography may actually be functionally independent. Previous research has supported Skinner's assertion of functional independence (e.g., Hall & Sundberg, 1987; Lamarre & Holland, 1985), and some research has suggested that specific programming must be incorporated to achieve generalization across verbal operants (e.g

[Similarities and differences between the behavior of Asperger's syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder].

Asperger's syndrome (AS) is one of subcategories of pervasive developmental disorder defined by behavioral symptoms. These symptoms include repetitive and stereotyped patterns similar to the behavior of obsessive-compulsive disorder(OCD). These are included by a broader concept newly named as obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. While there may be biological bases common to the repetitive behaviors of PDD and OCD, differential diagnosis is important from the clinical point of view. Most of the obsession-like and compulsion-like behaviors of the former lack ego-dystonic features. Moreover,

Peripheral multidendritic sensory neurons are necessary for rhythmic locomotion behavior in Drosophila larvae.

From breathing to walking, rhythmic movements encompass physiological processes important across the entire animal kingdom. It is thought by many that the generation of rhythmic behavior is operated by a central pattern generator (CPG) and does not require peripheral sensory input. Sensory feedback is, however, required to modify or coordinate the motor activity in response to the circumstances of actual movement. In contrast to this notion, we report here that sensory input is necessary for the generation of Drosophila larval locomotion, a form of rhythmic behavior. Blockage of all peripheral

Electrochemical behavior of nitrogen gas species adsorbed onto boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes.

The adsorption of nitrogen species, in neutral electrolyte solutions, onto boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode surfaces from dissolved NO2, NO, and N2O gases was induced at 0 V/SCE. Modified BDD electrode surfaces showed a different electrochemical response toward the hydrogen evolution reaction than did a nonmodified electrode surface in electrolyte base solution. The formation of molecular hydrogen and nitrogen gaseous species was confirmed by the online differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) technique. Among the three nitrogen oxides gases, NO2 substantially modifies the elec

Prepartum behavior and dry matter intake identify dairy cows at risk for metritis.

Metritis is a disease of particular concern after calving because of its profound negative effects on the reproductive performance of dairy cows. Cows at risk for metritis have shorter feeding times in the days before calving but prepartum dry matter intake (DMI) and water intake may also be useful in identifying cows at risk for this disease. Feeding, drinking, and intake measures may also be affected by social interactions among group-housed cows. The objective of this study, therefore, was to measure intake, feeding, drinking, and social behavior to determine which measures could identify c

Bone marrow stromal cells induce changes in pain behavior after sciatic nerve constriction.

Peripheral nerve injury, i.e. a single ligature nerve constriction (SLNC), triggers neuropathic pain. Bone marrow stromal cells (MSCs) have been observed to migrate to the injured tissues and mediate functional recovery following brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerve lesions. We have recently shown MSC selective migration to the ipsilateral lumbar (L3-6) dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) after a sciatic nerve SLNC. In this study, we have analyzed the thermal and mechanical sensitivities of animals subjected to a SLNC of the sciatic nerve and an ipsilateral intraganglionic MSC injection, using the v

A model for the behavior of beta-hCG after evacuation of hydatidiform moles.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to develop a physical model of the behavior of beta-hCG following the complete evacuation of a hydatidiform mole. Because hCG is an excellent marker for continued trophoblastic activity, the model can be used for early detection of persistent sites. METHOD: The model was developed from analysis of the post surgical hCG decrease in a patient with Stage III gestational trophoblastic neoplasia. As found in previous molar pregnancy studies, hCG follows a log-linear decrease after resolution. In contrast to those studies, however, we assume that the decre

The reliability and validity of the Test of Adaptive Behavior in Schizophrenia (TABS).

Performance-based tests of functional capacity are important to utilize in schizophrenia where global measures may underestimate community functioning in the context of impoverished environments and disincentives to return to work. The Test of Adaptive Behavior in Schizophrenia (TABS) is a performance-based measure of adaptive functioning designed to address limitations of other available measures including limited assessment of the ability to initiate and of the ability to identify problems that occur in the course of performing functional activities. The TABS and a variety of symptom, functi

GnRH mediates estrous behavior induced by ring A reduced progestins and vaginocervical stimulation.

The present study was designed to assess the participation of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) in the display of estrous behavior induced by application of vaginal-cervical stimulation (VCS) and by the intracerebroventricular (icv) administration of progesterone and its ring A-reduced metabolites to ovariectomized (ovx), estradiol benzoate (E2B) primed rats. Icv injection of Antide, a GnRH-1 receptor antagonist, significantly depressed lordosis behavior in ovx, E2B-primed rats treated with icv GnRH. Application of VCS to ovx, E2B-primed rats facilitated both lordosis and proceptivity. The
