Cross-sensitization between footshock stress and apomorphine on self-injurious behavior and neostriatal catecholamines in a rat model of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome.

The effects of footshock sensitization (priming), apomorphine (APO) priming and their combination on behavior and neostriatal and cortical catecholamines were examined in adult rats which had neonatally received bilateral intracerebroventricular injections with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA; a model of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS)) or vehicle (unlesioned rats). Lesioned (6-OHDA-treated) rats displayed self-biting (SB; 7/20 rats) and self-injurious behavior (SIB; 1/20 rats) during APO priming, but not during footshock priming. During subsequent acute cumulative APO dosing, 20-30% of lesioned rats pri

Genetics of alcoholism: role of the endogenous opioid system.

At the present time alcoholism is recognized as a metabolic disease exhibiting the clinical features of craving for alcohol, loss of control over drinking, tolerance and physical dependence on alcohol, while both epidemiological and experimental studies have demonstrated that genetic factors may be important in determining whether an individual has a high or low vulnerability to develop alcoholism. Evidence also indicates that alcoholism is not characterized by a single gene single allele inheritance. Instead it seems that multiple genes and environmental factors interact to increase or decrea

Estradiol and progesterone influence the response of ventromedial hypothalamic neurons to tactile stimuli associated with female reproduction.

Stimulation of the vagina and cervix, provided by the male during copulation or manually with a probe, causes many behavioral and endocrine changes associated with female reproduction in rats. Previously, we found that vaginal-cervical stimulation (VCS), by mating or manual probing, increases the expression of Fos-immunoreactivity (Fos-IR) in discrete populations of neurons in the preoptic area, mediobasal hypothalamus and midbrain, suggesting that these neurons respond to VCS. The purpose of the present study was to determine if hormonal priming would increase the number of Fos-IR cells follo

Hostility: relationship to lifestyle behaviors and physical risk factors.

The relationship between hostility and coronary artery disease may be partially mediated by unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. This study examined the relationship between hostility, lifestyle behaviors, and physical risk factors in 138 adult men and women. Subjects completed the Cook and Medley Hostility Scale (Ho scale) and self-reports of their dietary habits, consumption of alcohol and cigarettes, and physical activity. Recent findings indicated that a composite hostility score from three rationally derived subscales of the Ho scale tapping the dimensions of cynicism, hostile affect, and aggre

Modification of behavioral responses to methamphetamine evoked by the stimulant's metabolite p-hydroxynorephedrine in rats.

The central effect of p-hydroxynorephedrine (OH-NE), one of the p-hydroxylated metabolites of methamphetamine (MAP) and amphetamine (AMP), was investigated in rats. Locomotion and stereotypy were examined after SC injections of 0.5-5 mg/kg of MAP or 0.02-0.5 mg/kg of apomorphine (APO) in animals treated with either saline or 5-50 mg/kg of OH-NE IP 20 hr before behavioral assessment. The locomotor stimulating effect of both 0.5-2 mg/kg of MAP and 0.2 mg/kg of APO was enhanced by 5 mg/kg of OH-NE. On the other hand, 30 mg/kg of OH-NE severely suppressed the stimulating effect of MAP but had no i

The neuroteratogenicity of procarbazine in the rat: behavioral, morphological, and neurochemical aspects.

Pregnant female Sprague-Dawley rats were treated from day 12 through day 15 of gestation with procarbazine, an antineoplastic drug, and their offspring were subjected to tests of locomotor development and behavior. Treatment levels ranged from 0.5 mg/kg/day, a dose that produced no abnormalities, to 10 mg/kg/day, a dose that caused a marked micrencephaly in the absence of other teratological changes. Despite marked morphological brain changes, preweaning locomotor development, as assessed by open-field swimming activity and vertical grid climbing, was normal in all offspring. Post-weaning pass

Lack of persistent effects of low-dose ethanol administered postnatally in rats.

This investigation studied direct effects of a low dose of ethanol (1.2 g/kg) administered intragastrically twice daily in a nutriment (Sustagen, Mead Johnson) vehicle upon growth and specific neuroendocrine and behavioral responses in the rat. Charles Rivers, CD albino rats (12 litters) were randomly assigned to 3 groups: ethanol, Sustagen, or handled; 5 litters served as unhandled controls. On postnatal days 2-9, experimental animals were intragastrically fed ethanol or isocaloric Sustagen twice daily; pups were behaviorally depressed for 1-2 hours during treatment. Body weight changes for a

A potential young murderer.

Longitudinal study of six people who committed homicides or exhibited a potential for homicidal behavior was undertaken over a period of ten years. The data were obtained through psychiatric interviews, psychological testing, and examination of all available records. The material thus obtained was analyzed from the psychoanalytic point of view. Three specific points were identified as being common and applicable to a lesser or greater degree in all six cases studied. First, as children each of these six people suffered actual physical abuse perpetrated by their parents. Second, they actually s

Psychophysiologic effects of early lead exposure.

In several separate experiments neonatal rats were intubated daily with 9, 27 or 81 mg lead acetate/kg of body weight throughout their 3-week postnatal period of development. Based on average body weights, the total daily lead intake was 0.156, 0.454 or 1.384 mg lead per animal, respectively (in addition to normal lead intake from the environment). Subtle and specific behavioral changes, involving an inability to attenuate inappropriate behavior in a two-way shuttle or a habit-reversal operant task, occurred in offspring following exposure to a minimum of 0.454 mg lead per day. The specificity

A review of research on crawling soft robots: bionic mechanisms and actuation motion.

Crawling soft robots have attracted widespread attention due to their high adaptability to unstructured environments. However, existing research often focuses on understanding the formation mechanism of their motion capabilities from the perspective of actuation methods or control strategies, resulting in fragmented design logic and a lack of a unified framework. Through comparative analysis across animal, plant, and microbial systems, this paper points out that crawling behavior in different biological systems largely depends on the synergistic effect of morphological deformation and interfac

Bowhead whale foraging dives are defined by speed and body orientation.

Quantifying the time baleen whales spend foraging is central to understanding the extent to which climate driven shifts in low-trophic prey may affect energy acquisition. To date, the most comprehensive understanding of balaenid (bowhead and right whale) feeding behavior comes from studies using inertial sensing tags (biologgers). Here, periods of ram filtration were inferred under predictable foraging conditions where whales targeted a deep, diapausing prey layer. However, foraging conditions are increasingly variable in high latitudes and zooplankton vertical distribution, abundance and biom

Neuroprotective Effects of Empagliflozin Against Methamphetamine-Induced Withdrawal Syndrome in Mice: Involvement of Bdnf, Tlr4, and JNK Signaling Pathways and Oxidative Stress Biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine withdrawal is associated with reduced dopaminergic neurotransmission, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and structural brain changes, which are linked to cognitive impairment, memory deficits, and psychological distress. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether empagliflozin, a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor, mitigates behavioral, molecular, and histopathological alterations induced by chronic methamphetamine (METH) exposure. METHODS: Eighty male NMRI mice were allocated to 8 groups (n = 10). Methamphetamine dependence was induced by administering

Trust and professional relationships drive participation in passive cattle health surveillance among Dutch farmers and veterinarians.

Active involvement of farmers and veterinarians is crucial for the effectiveness of passive surveillance. This study aimed to identify the psychosocial factors influencing farmers' and veterinarians' decisions to contact a veterinary helpdesk or the competent authorities regarding cattle health concerns in the Netherlands. We used the COM-B model: for any Behavior (B) to occur, an individual must have the Capability (C), Opportunity (O), and Motivation (M) to perform it. Two separate surveys (for farmers or veterinarians) with Likert-scale statements informed by the COM-B behavioral framework

Preparation and Characterization of Biopolymeric-Based Orally Dissolving Mucoadhesive Hydrogels Loaded With Rosuvastatin for the Effective Treatment of Aphthous Ulcer.

The primary objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a sustained-release mucoadhesive hydrogel loaded with Rosuvastatin (RSV) to enhance the treatment of aphthous ulcers. By leveraging the pleiotropic anti-inflammatory and tissue-repair properties of RSV, the study aimed to overcome the rapid clearance and low efficacy associated with conventional oral gels and mouthwashes. Mucoadhesive hydrogels were formulated using Carbopol 934 and sodium alginate via a freeze-thaw crosslinking technique. Four formulations (F1-F4) were prepared and evaluated for morphology, swelling behavior, vis

Deciphering the unique inertial focusing behavior of sperm cells.

Inertial focusing has been utilized to advance assisted reproductive technologies (ART) for animal breeding and in vitro fertilization (IVF) by separating sperm cells from biofluids with complex cell backgrounds. While existing studies have aimed to design and optimize sperm separation devices, the fundamental mechanism behind the unique focusing behavior of sperm in spiral channels remains largely unknown: sperm cells focus near the outer wall, whereas most other cells focus near the inner wall. This is primarily due to the lack of a direct modelling scheme for capturing the detailed inertial

Studying Chronic Exposure of Mice to Ultraviolet B Radiation.

Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation (280-320 nm) has been recognized as a carcinogen since 1928, leading to sun exposure minimization. However, epidemiological studies suggest that sun exposure correlates with increased life expectancy and reduced incidence of cardiovascular diseases and certain cancers such as colon and endometrial cancer. UVB exposure also influences liver metabolism, protects against hepatocellular lipotoxicity, and affects metabolic health. These effects are partly due to vitamin D synthesis, though some are independent of vitamin D. Moreover, phototherapy with UVB has immunomod

Effects of combined prenatal exposure to air pollution and maternal stress on immune and dopaminergic gene expression in the gut-brain axis.

Air pollution and maternal stress during pregnancy are both risk factors for neurodevelopmental disorders and often converge on the same communities. Epidemiological and animal studies suggest that maternal psychosocial stress may worsen the effects of air pollutants on neurodevelopmental outcomes. Previous work utilizing a mouse model of combined prenatal exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEP) and maternal stress (MS) has found numerous sex-specific effects of DEP/MS exposure on neuroimmune outcomes, dopamine receptors, the gut-brain axis, and social behavior. However, it is unclear how b

Effects of Cold Atmospheric Plasma on Cellular Behavior in Oral and Dental Tissues: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: Cold Atmospheric Plasma (CAP) is known for its ability to interact with living tissues without causing thermal damage. In dentistry, CAP has been explored for its potential for direct therapeutic applications, such as tissue regeneration, wound healing, and sterilization. CAP is currently transitioning from strong preclinical evidence to limited but growing clinical use, mainly within specialized research settings. This study aimed to systematically review the current literature on the effects of CAP on oral and dental tissue cell behavior, focusing on outcomes like proliferation, dif

Amorphous silicon carbide probe mechanics for insertion in the cerebral cortex of rats, pigs, and macaques.

Objective.Intracortical microelectrode arrays (MEAs) are implantable devices used for neural recording and stimulation. However, their long-term performance is often compromised due, at least in part, to glial scar formation, initiated by microglial migration and astrocyte activation following implantation. To address this issue, ultra-thin MEAs (UMEAs) have been proposed as an alternative due to their reduced cross-sectional area (CSA) and enhanced flexibility that minimizes the mechanical mismatch between brain tissue and the electrode. These properties are expected to mitigate the persisten

Effect of on-farm hatching and elevated platforms on behavior and performance in fast-growing broiler chickens.

Alternative hatching systems compared to conventional hatchery-hatched systems showed positive effects on welfare of broiler chickens. In order to investigate an additional positive effect of elevated platforms, two hatching methods (on-farm [OH] vs. hatchery-hatched [HH]) and two environments from the first day onwards (with elevated platforms [enriched] vs. without elevated platforms [control]) were combined and investigated using a 2 × 2 factorial design. In three consecutive trials, the combination of the four treatments were repeated eight times each. One thousand six hundred fast-growing
