Process of Change in Pain-Related Fear: Clinical Insights From a Single Case Report of Persistent Back Pain Managed With Cognitive Functional Therapy.

Study Design Single case report with repeated measures over 18 months. Background Management of persistent low back pain (PLBP) associated with high pain-related fear is complex. This case report aims to provide clinicians with insight into the process of change in a person with PLBP and high bending-related fear, who was managed with an individualized behavioral approach of cognitive functional therapy. Case Description A retired manual worker with PLBP believed that his spine was degenerating, that bending would hurt him, and that avoidance was the only form of pain control. At baseline, he

Maternal exercise opportunity before, during, and after pregnancy alters maternal care behavior and offspring development and survival, but has few effects on offspring physical activity or body composition.

Early-life experiences, especially during critical periods of development and growth, can have long-lasting effects on adult phenotypes. Parents are a crucial part of the offspring early-life environment, particularly in mammals (e.g., via pregnancy), and parental behaviors (e.g., maternal exercise) can modify the early-life environment experienced by offspring. Such changes might be beneficial or detrimental, depending on how they affect offspring development and growth or interact with other key parental behaviors (e.g., nursing). We used mice from a long-term artificial selection experiment

IMPACT OF REAL-LIFE ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES ON REPRODUCTION: Rodent reproductive behavior among males and females after exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

IN BRIEF: The rodent reproductive behavioral control column of the hypothalamus and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis are critical systems that regulate copulatory behaviors in both males and females. We review how endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), specifically phthalates, bisphenol A, and chemical mixtures, dysregulate appetitive and consummatory copulatory behaviors and their neuroendocrine substrates, using mouse and rodent models. ABSTRACT: Sexual reproduction - from both physiological and behavioral perspectives - is dependent upon appropriate connections between a diver

P300 Event-Related Potentials Mediate the Relationship Between Child Physical Abuse and Externalizing Behavior.

The psychophysiological mechanism linking early childhood experiences to behavior problems remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the association of child physical abuse with P300 event-related potentials (ERP), and to test the mediating effect of P300 amplitude and latency in the relationship between child physical abuse and externalizing behaviors. Cross-sectional secondary data were obtained from 155 children (55.5% boys, mean age: 11.28 ± 0.57 years) who participated in the China Jintan Child Cohort Study. Children self-reported maternal and paternal physical abuse and externalizing

Applying a health action model to predict and improve healthy behaviors in coal miners.

INTRODUCTION: One of the most important ways to prevent work-related diseases in occupations such as mining is to promote healthy behaviors among miners. This study aimed to predict and promote healthy behaviors among coal miners by using a health action model (HAM). METHOD: The study was conducted on 200 coal miners in Iran in two steps. In the first step, a descriptive study was implemented to determine predictive constructs and effectiveness of HAM on behavioral intention. The second step involved a quasi-experimental study to determine the effect of an HAM-based education intervention. Th

Effects of chronic fentanyl administration on behavioral characteristics of mice.

BACKGROUND: Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid categorized as a narcotic analgesic, has a 100- to 200-fold stronger effect than most opioids, such as morphine. Fatal accidents due to chronic use and abuse of fentanyl are a worldwide social problem. One reason for the abuse of fentanyl is its psychostimulant effects that could induce behavioral changes. The effects of chronic fentanyl administration on behavior, however, are unclear. METHODS: Adult male C57BL/6J mice were chronically administered fentanyl (0.03 or 0.3 mg/kg/d i.p.), and various behaviors were assessed using a behavioral test battery

Exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and child behavior: Current findings and future directions.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are recognized neurotoxicants, but the extent to which PBDEs influence various domains of behavior in children is not fully understood. As such, we reviewed epidemiologic studies published to date to provide an overview of the current state of knowledge on PBDEs' potential role in behavioral development. We identified 19 epidemiologic studies reporting on associations of prenatal and childhood concentrations of PBDEs with behaviors assessed in children from 1 to 12years, including executive function, attention, externalizing and internalizing behaviors, a

Early ingestive experience with a high-fat diet tunes satiation and nutrient-specific appetitive behaviors.

Overconsumption of foods rich in fats, sugars, and calories is a major contributing factor to increased risk for cardiometabolic disease. Ingestive experience with these foods can begin early in children, yet there is limited understanding of the impact of early life nutrition on the development of vagal afferent neurons necessary for coordinating appetitive and satiating behaviors. To this end, mice reared on a chow diet (control) were compared to those reared on a high-fat diet (HFDEARLY). We demonstrate that the vagally-mediated satiation response to cholecystokinin (CCK) does not mature un

Systematic review evaluating randomized controlled trials of smoking and alcohol cessation interventions in people with head and neck cancer and oral dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: Smoking and alcohol increase the risk of head and neck cancer and affect treatment outcomes. Interventions modifying these behaviors may improve posttreatment outcomes and survival. We systematically reviewed evidence of the effectiveness of smoking/alcohol interventions in head and neck cancer and oral dysplasia. METHODS: The AMED, CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, and Web of Science databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of smoking/alcohol interventions in people with head and neck cancer. A qualitative synthesis of the studies was conducted. RESULTS: Three RCTs

Molecules and circuits involved in nicotine addiction: The many faces of smoking.

Tobacco smoking in humans is one of the most persistent and widespread addictions and is driven by nicotine in tobacco smoke. Over the last several decades, understanding of the molecular and cellular basis for nicotine addiction has increased tremendously as a result of pharmacological, molecular genetic, electrophysiological and behavioral studies of nicotine reinforcement. Studies of the biological basis for nicotine reinforcement has helped in the design of new treatments for smoking cessation such as varenicline; however, smokers report that they smoke for many reasons, including the abil

Intimate partner violence perpetration and condom use-related factors: associations with heterosexual men's consistent condom use.

Intimate partner violence victimization has been linked to sexual HIV risk behavior among heterosexual women. The unique role of perpetration of intimate partner violence (IPV) in sexual risk behavior among men has not been studied as well. Based on interviews with 518 heterosexual men recruited via street-intercept between 2005 and 2007 in New York City, we assessed the relationship between perpetration of IPV against a main female partner and inconsistent condom use with that same partner, while controlling for condom use-related factors. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that men wh

Febrile convulsions affect ultrasonic vocalizations in the rat pup.

Febrile convulsions are common among preschool children and are studied experimentally with hyperthermia in rat pups. Although heat-induced convulsions (HC+) can affect behaviors in adulthood, to date no one has examined the effects on behavior in the neonatal period. We examined the effects of HC+ on ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) and mother-pup interactions in P10- and P12-aged rat pups. On P7, 34 pups were subjected to HC+ (32 controls, HC-) and behaviors were observed on P10 and P12. For mother-pup interactions, a trend for a sex x treatment interaction was found, with HC- females and HC+

[Treatment of parasomnias].

In this article the most frequent and interesting treatments for parasomnias are reviewed. Arousal disorders, REM sleep behavior disorders and nightmares, bruxism (which can occur in any sleep state) are considered. The pathophysiological mechanisms of parasomnias are unknown, explaining why there is rarely a specific treatment precipitating. Management depends on the patient's age, the frequency and intensity of the episodes, the familial structure, the presence of precipitating and risk factors, psychological disorders and the parasomnia itself. Different therapeutic approaches are described

AIDS prevention in high-risk African American women: behavioral, psychological, and gender issues.

A three-year longitudinal intervention study was implemented to reduce high-risk drug and sexual behaviors in methadone-dependent African American women. Participants were recruited from four inner-city methadone maintenance programs and randomly assigned either to an eight-week peer counseling and leadership training group or to a control group. The 107 trainees and 97 controls completed pretests and posttests at two, four, and seven months. This paper focuses on final data related to the subjects' sexual beliefs, attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors that put them at risk for HIV/AIDS. Reasons
