Sexual behavior induces naloxone-reversible hypoalgesia in male rats.

The sensitivity to painful and sexual stimuli in male rats was markedly suppressed immediately after ejaculation and enhanced after the postejaculatory refractory period. The suppression of pain sensitivity induced by sexual activity was reversed, but sexual behavior was only slightly affected by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of the opioid antagonist naloxone (5 mg). Plasma concentrations of beta-endorphin-like immunoreactivity were unaffected by sexual activity. Injection of beta-endorphin (10 micrograms s.c.) markedly raised plasma concentrations of beta-endorphin-like immunoreactivity wi

Hyperactivity, antisocial behavior, and childhood injury: a critical analysis of the literature.

Studies investigating the relationship between hyperactivity, antisocial behavior, and injury in children are reviewed. Most of the studies have reported that these behaviors are important risk factors for injury. However, design problems with these studies are noted. Early studies employed inappropriate control groups, or omitted them altogether, whereas more recent studies have used retrospective measures that depend on the recall of mothers and teachers, and which are therefore vulnerable to bias. When, on the other hand, prospective designs were used, a relationship between hyperactivity a

Behavioral variability within the Brattleboro and Long-Evans rat strains.

Samples of genetically diabetes insipidus (DI) and normal (NO) rats were obtained from American suppliers (Rochester (RO)/DI and NO) and from the colony maintained at Charing Cross Hospital in London (Charing Cross (CC)/DI and NO) to test the hypothesis that the behavior of vasopressin-deficient Brattleboro (DI) and possibly normal Long-Evans rats may vary significantly between different colonies. DI rats of both colonies exhibit longer latencies to emerge into an open field than do NO rats. RO/DI and CC/DI rats acquire goal-approach behavior in a straight runway at similar rates. Vasopressin and glucoprivic-feeding behavior: a new perspective on an 'old' peptide.

The feeding responses induced by systemic administration of 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) and paraventricular hypothalamic injection of norepinephrine were assessed in Brattleboro rats deficient in vasopressin (VP). Controlling for the non-specific complications of diabetes insipidus, it was found that Brattleboro rats have a deficient 2-DG-feeding response, but an essentially normal noradrenergic-feeding response. Specific carbohydrate appetite abnormalities were also demonstrated. It is argued that VP influences 2-DG feeding by mobilizing endogenous energy stores following its acute release from

Effects of atypical patterns of fetal growth on newborn (NBAS) behavior.

Newborn infants who showed anthropometric signs of atypical patterns of fetal growth were compared with infants of appropriate growth on the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS) and on recently developed supplementary items. The sample consisted of lower-socioeconomic-status families in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and included teenage and older mothers. Infants with atypical patterns of fetal growth showed lower scores than did infants of appropriate growth on the NBAS orientation, motor, and reflex clusters and on 15 of the 18 supplementary scores. Gestational age was covaried and showed in

Behavioral and endocrinological effects of single injections of monosodium glutamate in the mouse.

Treatment of neonatal mice with large, repeated doses of monosodium L-glutamate (MSG) produces a syndrome of obesity and endocrinological dysfunction generally attributed to a hypothalamic lesion. We have used single injections of MSG, administered on postnatal day four, to explore the lower end of the dose-response curve for this toxin. Major features of the MSG syndrome including hypophagia, obesity, hypoactivity, reduced pituitary protein content, decreased ovarian weight, delayed puberty and elevated plasma corticosterone levels were obtained at the highest dose. Of the variables measured,

Intellectual, behavioral, and linguistic characteristics of three children with 18p- syndrome.

Developmental characteristics of three girls with 18p- syndrome are described, with detailed history and results of psychological and speech/language evaluations completed at various ages. Results suggest that some children with 18p- syndrome have average abilities in selected areas, despite previous reports that these children have mild to severe mental retardation. Two of the three girls had more severe deficits in linguistic, as opposed to nonlinguistic, abilities. All had similar difficulties with speech articulation. It is suggested that children with speech/language delays who have physi

Behavioral effects of 0 and 0.05% blood alcohol in male volunteers.

Five behavioral tests were evaluated to determine their sensitivity to the subtle central nervous system (CNS) depressant effects produced by ingestion of ethanol. Twenty-one adult male volunteers received 0 and 1.4 ml 100 proof vodka/kg body weight according to a "double-blind" crossover design. Behavioral tests were conducted between 15 and 65 minutes after ethanol ingestion, when blood alcohol concentrations (BAC's) were between 0.05 and 0.06%. Tests evaluated were Archimedes spiral, digit span memory, critical flicker fusion, stabilometry and tachistoscope. Multivariate analysis of varianc

Extraversion, neuroticism, and sexual behavior: interrelationships in a sample of young men.

In his theory on sexuality and personality Eysenck proposed a positive correlation between extraversion and intensified sexual behavior and between neuroticism and problems in sexual behavior. An earlier study with married persons did not show any of these correlations. It was hypothesized that this connection exists only for unmarried persons who are not engaged in long-lasting relationships, because in the latter the quality of the relationship determines the sexual interaction. Within a sample of young unmarried men there was a positive correlation between extraversion and items in which th

The food additive-free diet in the treatment of behavior disorders: a review.

A food additive-free diet has been recommended as a component of the treatment of developmental/behavioral disorders in children. This diet was initially developed by Dr. Benjamin Feingold for the treatment of aspirin sensitivity in adults, and then extended by him to the management, particularly, of hyperactivity and learning disability in children. The rationale for this diet and the methods employed in investigating its use are described. The claimed therapeutic effects of this diet have been investigated in a number of well-designed studies reviewed here. These studies generally refute a c

Agitated behaviors in the elderly. II. Preliminary results in the cognitively deteriorated.

Agitation was studied in 66 nursing home residents from two nursing units for agitated, cognitively deteriorated elderly. The frequency of occurrence of manifestations of various agitated behaviors was documented by nursing home staff using a seven-point was frequency rating scale. Additionally, the factors of age, cognitive level, activities of daily living (ADL) functioning, frequency of waking up at night, and medication for agitation were monitored, and nurses' attributions for agitation in each individual were reported. Results indicated that: agitated behaviors were strongly interrelated

Behavioral effects of a single neuroleptic treatment grow with the passage of time.

The principal finding of this manuscript is that the incidence of catalepsy observed in the rat after a single administration of low, clinically relevant doses of the dopamine receptor antagonists and antipsychotic agents, haloperidol and fluphenazine hydrochloride, grows over time such that one re-exposure to the same compound up to 8 weeks later results in a marked enhancement (i.e. sensitization) of this response. This phenomenon appears to be independent of pharmacokinetic or conditioning factors as well as alterations in dopamine or dihydroxyphenylacetic acid. It suggests that the antidop

A system for assessing toxicity of chemicals by continuous monitoring of homecage behaviors.

A noninvasive system is described for continuous recording of behaviors in the home cages of rats. Commercially available mesh cages were used so as to conform with housing conditions in most toxicological studies. A minicomputer controlled environmental lighting and recorded eating, drinking, rearing, and horizontal activity. The system's sensitivity was comparable to more complex systems. Validity was demonstrated through manipulation of environmental lighting, food deprivation, and the effects of amphetamine, scopolamine, ethanol, methylscopolamine, triethyltin, and trimethyltin. Rett syndrome: a significant proportion of girls affected by autistic behavior.

The main clinical features of 20 girls affected by the Rett syndrome are described and for 3 of them more detailed case reports are given. Fifteen of these girls were observed for the first time between October 1983 and February 1985. In the same period 25 other girls with the complete features of infantile autism were also seen for the first time. The marked loneliness with gaze and hearing avoidance and the speech abnormality of girls with the Rett syndrome are also discussed.

Effects of endogenous hyperprolactinaemia on opiate-induced behavioral changes in rats.

Endogenous hyperprolactinaemia, as induced by pituitary homografts under the kidney capsule, was followed by an inhibition of heroin self-administration in rats. This effect was mimicked by intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of rat prolactin (PRL) or peripheral administration of a hyperprolactinaemia-inducing drug, domperidone. I.c.v. injection of anti-PRL serum totally abolished the effect of hyperprolactinaemia on heroin self-administration behavior and facilitated it in rats with normal plasma PRL levels. The development of tolerance to morphine was facilitated in hyperprolactinaemi
