Effects of desalivation on schedule-induced polydipsia in the rat.

The development and magnitude of schedule-induced polydipisa (SIP) were examined in desalivate and control rats in two experiments. In Experiment 1 animals were placed on a noncontingent fixed time (FT) 60-sec schedule for 24 days. Results indicate speeded development but asymptotically lower levels of SIP in desalivate rats compared to controls. Home cage consumption, however, was elevated in desalivate rats. In Experiment 2 schedule length, pellet size, and the percentage of body weight were manipulated. Desalivate rats consumed less fluid during each schedule condition relative to controls,

Electromyographic activity of equine abdominal muscles during single and double riding in hippotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Hippotherapy is a therapeutic intervention that uses the horse as a biomechanical and sensorimotor agent to promote rehabilitation in individuals with physical and neurological disabilities. Depending on patient needs, riding may be performed with a single rider or with double riding, in which a therapist accompanies the practitioner on the horse. However, the effects of these riding configurations on equine trunk muscle activity remain poorly understood, despite their relevance for both horse welfare and the quality of therapeutic stimuli delivered to the patient. METHODS: Nine c

Simultaneous Bilateral Scapular Fractures: A Scoping Review.

Background and Objectives: Simultaneous bilateral scapular fractures are exceptionally rare injuries and are most commonly associated with high-energy trauma, convulsions, or electrical injury. Their occurrence following low-energy trauma is extremely uncommon. This study aimed to conduct a scoping review of the literature on simultaneous bilateral scapular fractures, with emphasis on demographic characteristics, mechanisms of injury, fracture patterns, treatment strategies, and clinical outcomes. To provide clinical context, the findings are illustrated by a case of a 43-year-old previously h

Characterization of rhesus macaque model for cobalt-60 gamma-radiation source without use of blood product.

Despite significant radiobiological advancements following World War II, only a limited number of medical countermeasures (MCMs) have been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) for acute radiation exposure related illnesses. Accordingly, well-characterized and validated animal models, both large and small, are still very much needed to develop safe and effective countermeasures. Animal models that are used for such purposes need to reflect not only the clinical and pathogenic features of those seen in radiation exposed humans, but also comparable radiation dose- a

Uncoupling protein 1 deficiency leads to transcriptomic differences in livers of pregnancy female mice and aggravates hepatic steatosis.

Pregnancy requires the coordination of metabolically active organs to support maternal nutrition and fetal growth. However, the metabolic cross-talk between adipose tissue and liver in females during pregnancy is still less clear. In this study, we evaluated the metabolic adaptations and phenotypes of liver in response to pregnancy-associated metabolic stress, particularly in the context of genetic ablation of Uncoupling protein 1 (Ucp1)-mediated catabolic circuit. Our results revealed that Ucp1 deficiency (UCP1 knockout, KO) mice during late pregnancy exhibited significantly deteriorated meta

Effects of peak ankle dorsiflexion angle on lower extremity biomechanics and pelvic motion during walking and jogging.

OBJECTIVE: Ankle dorsiflexion during walking causes the tibia to roll forward relative to the foot to achieve body forward. Individuals with ankle dorsiflexion restriction may present altered movement patterns and cause a series of dysfunction. Therefore, the aim of this research was to clearly determine the effects of peak ankle dorsiflexion angle on lower extremity biomechanics and pelvic motion during walking and jogging. METHOD: This study involved 51 subjects tested for both walking and jogging. The motion capture system and force measuring platforms were used to synchronously collect ki

A new approach to describe the taxonomic structure of microbiome and its application to assess the relationship between microbial niches.

BACKGROUND: Data from microbiomes from multiple niches is often collected, but methods to analyse these often ignore associations between niches. One interesting case is that of the oral microbiome. Its composition is receiving increasing attention due to reports on its associations with general health. While the oral cavity includes different niches, multi-niche microbiome data analysis is conducted using a single niche at a time and, therefore, ignores other niches that could act as confounding variables. Understanding the interaction between niches would assist interpretation of the results

A prospective cohort study of factors associated with the digital cushion thickness in dairy cattle.

Key factors such as stage of lactation, parity, and body fat reserves have been associated with the digital cushion thickness (DCT), however, there are discrepancies between the results of previously published studies. The objective of this study was to examine the association of stage of lactation, body fat reserves, parity, and lesion incidence with DCT in a large cohort of intensively monitored cows. Across 4 UK farms, 2,352 cows were prospectively enrolled and assessed at 4 time points: before calving (T1-Precalving), immediately after calving (T2-Calving), in early lactation (T3-Early), a

Using Machine-Learning to Predict Sleep-Disordered Breathing Diagnosis From Medical Comorbidities and Craniofacial Features.

Objectives This paper attempts to use machine-learning (ML) algorithms to predict the presence of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in a patient based on their body habitus, craniofacial anatomy, and social history. Materials and methods Data from a group of 69 adult patients who attended a dental clinic for oral surgeries and dental procedures in the last 10 years was used to train machine-learning models to predict whether a subject is likely to have SDB based on input information such as age, gender, smoking history, body mass index (BMI), oropharyngeal airway (Mallampati assessment), forwar

Patterns of concomitant injury in thoracic spine fractures.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic spine fractures (TSFs) are rarely isolated injuries, and they tend to present with a characteristic set of vertebral and non-vertebral injuries based on mechanism of injury. There is limited research on the rates and distribution of injuries that occur concurrently with TSFs. The purpose of this study is to characterize the distributions of these injuries by region of the body and by mechanisms of injury, so that trauma and spine surgeons can efficiently evaluate and treat patients presenting with TSFs. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the trauma database records of 6

The Subcortical-Allocortical- Neocortical continuum for the Emergence and Morphological Heterogeneity of Pyramidal Neurons in the Human Brain.

Human cortical and subcortical areas integrate emotion, memory, and cognition when interpreting various environmental stimuli for the elaboration of complex, evolved social behaviors. Pyramidal neurons occur in developed phylogenetic areas advancing along with the allocortex to represent 70-85% of the neocortical gray matter. Here, we illustrate and discuss morphological features of heterogeneous spiny pyramidal neurons emerging from specific amygdaloid nuclei, in CA3 and CA1 hippocampal regions, and in neocortical layers II/III and V of the anterolateral temporal lobe in humans. Corticoperipheral neuromuscular disconnection in obstructive sleep apnoea.

The roles of central nervous mechanisms and cortical output in obstructive sleep apnoea remain unclear. We addressed corticomuscular coupling between cortical sensorimotor areas and lower facial motor units as a mechanistic pathway and as a possible surrogate marker of corticoperipheral motor control in obstructive sleep apnoea. In this exploratory cross-sectional retrospective study, we analysed EEG (C3 and C4 leads) and chin EMG from polysomnography recordings in 86 participants (22 females; age range: 26-81 years): 27 with mild (respiratory disturbance index = 5-15 events/h), 21 with modera

Expression of immune-related genes of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus after Gyrodactylus cichlidarum and Cichlidogyrus sclerosus infections demonstrating immunosupression in coinfection.

Gyrodactylus cichlidarum and Cichlidogyrus sclerosus, two monogenean ectoparasite species commonly found on the body surface and gills of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) respectively, inflicted considerable economic losses in intensive tilapia farming. In order to explore the immune response of tilapia against these two species of monogeneans, expression patterns of five immune-related genes were studied after singular G. cichlidarum or C. sclerosus infection and their coinfection. The transcription levels of IL-1β were up-regulated in the skin after G. cichlidarum infection, reaching a p

Dietary Almonds Increase Serum HDL Cholesterol in Coronary Artery Disease Patients in a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: More than one-half of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients have low HDL cholesterol despite having well-managed LDL cholesterol. Almond supplementation has not been shown to elevate circulating HDL cholesterol concentrations in clinical trials, perhaps because the baseline HDL cholesterol of trial subjects was not low. OBJECTIVE: This clinical trial was designed to test the effect of almond supplementation on low HDL cholesterol in CAD patients. METHODS: A total of 150 CAD patients (50 per group), with serum LDL cholesterol ≤100 mg/dL and HDL cholesterol ≤40 mg/dL in men and ≤5

Muscle histopathology in nebulin-related nemaline myopathy: ultrastrastructural findings correlated to disease severity and genotype.

Nemaline myopathy (NM) is a rare congenital myopathy characterised by hypotonia, muscle weakness, and often skeletal muscle deformities with the presence of nemaline bodies (rods) in the muscle biopsy. The nebulin (NEB) gene is the most commonly mutated and is thought to account for approximately 50% of genetically diagnosed cases of NM. We undertook a detailed muscle morphological analysis of 14 NEB-mutated NM patients with different clinical forms to define muscle pathological patterns and correlate them with clinical course and genotype. Three groups were identified according to clinical se

Muscle synergies and functional network organization underlying Tai Chi movements: a pilot cross-Sectional study towards a personalized Neuromechanical Baseline.

UNLABELLED: Tai Chi (TC) integrates coordinated upper-lower limb movements and bilateral motor patterns that enhance neuromuscular control. Despite its rehabilitation potential, patients with motor dysfunction often find standard TC postures difficult to perform, and target muscles vary across individuals. This study aimed to characterize muscle synergies and functional networks during TC to inform personalized rehabilitation. Twenty-three experienced practitioners performed the 24-form TC sequence while surface electromyography (sEMG) signals were recorded from 16 bilateral upper- and lower-l

Association between Body Roundness Index and infertility risk in Han Chinese women: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Infertility is a major global health concern and is increasingly recognized to be influenced by metabolic and anthropometric factors. The Body Roundness Index (BRI), a waist- and height-based indicator of central adiposity, has been associated with cardiometabolic outcomes. Although emerging studies have examined the relationship between BRI and infertility, evidence remains limited across populations, particularly regarding non-linear associations and effect modification. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the association between BRI and infertility risk in Han Chinese women

Age-Specific Diagnostic Panorama Among People With Intellectual Disabilities in Comparison With the General Population: A Longitudinal Register Study (IDcare).

BackgroundPeople with intellectual disabilities (ID) are known to have a higher risk for a wide range of health conditions compared to the general population. However, there is little research comparing a more comprehensive range of diseases and conditions at different ages. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the overall age-specific diagnostic pattern among people with ID compared to the general population.MethodOf all people living in Skåne, the southernmost part of Sweden (n = 1 274 727), those with a diagnosis indicating ID (F70-F79 or Q90 according to ICD-10) and/or service a
