Bilateral Panuveitis and Exudative Retinal Detachments Associated with Alpelisib.

We report a case of alpelisib-induced uveitis. A 68-year-old female who had recently been given alpelisib for metastatic breast cancer presented with a 2-week history of bilateral worsening vision with a corresponding acute hypermetropic shift. Her unaided visual acuity was 6/60 in both eyes, with bilateral anterior uveitis, non-granulomatous keratic precipitates, posterior synechiae, and limited fundal view. There was also a mild iris bombe configuration, although the intraocular pressures were normal. Ocular ultrasound revealed bilateral uveal effusion, ciliary body congestion, dense vitreou

Fluorescence - modern method of the diagnosis of chronic wounds on the example of venous leg ulcer.

INTRODUCTION: Fluorescence imaging has become a method for bacterial visualisation in chronic wounds for the last few years. MolecuLight i:X (MolecuLight, Inc, ON, Canada) is a handheld device, which enables quick diagnostics to determine both the type and location of pathogens present in the wound and on the skin. By means of fluorescent light illumination the tissues populated by pathogenic bacteria emit red or cyan fluorescent signatures, depending on the type of the pathogen: red fluorescence signal is emitted by Staphylococcus and Escherichia coli among others, while Pseudomonas aeruginos

Coronary physiology to guide treatment of coronary artery disease in a patient with severe aortic valve stenosis: friend or foe? A case report.

BACKGROUND: Severe aortic valve stenosis (AS) is the most frequent valve pathology in the developed world requiring intervention. Due to common factors in pathogenesis, patients with AS frequently have concomitant coronary artery disease (CAD). Determining the relative contribution of each component to the disease state is not easy as there is much overlap in complaints. Moreover, severe AS interferes with the haemodynamic assessment of intermediate coronary lesions. CASE SUMMARY: In this case report we describe the presentation and management of an 84-year-old patient, with a severely degene

WHO informal consultation on revision of guidelines on evaluation of similar biotherapeutic products, virtual meeting, 30 June - 2 July 2021.

The WHO informal consultation was held to promote the revision of WHO guidelines on evaluation of similar biotherapeutic products (SBPs) adopted by the Expert Committee on Biological Standardization (ECBS) in 2009. It was agreed in the past consultations that the evaluation principles in the guidelines are still valid, but a review was recommended to provide more clarity and case-by-case flexibility. The opportunity was therefore taken to review the experience and identify areas where the current guidance could be more permissive without compromising its basic principles, and where additional

Rubber Bullet Induced Traumatic Brain Injury.

Rubber bullets have long been known to cause, on rare occasions, traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, neurosurgical literature on this occurrence is limited, and no focused review of this injury pattern has been conducted. The authors present the case of a 28-year-old male struck by a rubber bullet in the left periorbital region, causing TBI in addition to complete left visual loss and complex facial fractures. After developing a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, the patient was taken to the operating room for combined neurosurgical-craniofacial intervention. Utilizing frameless intraoperative

Effect of menstrual cycle phase, menstrual irregularities and hormonal contraceptive use on anterior knee laxity and non-contact anterior cruciate ligament injury occurrence in women: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Exercising women report three to six times more ACL tears than men, which happen, in the majority of cases, with a non-contact mechanism. This sex disparity has, in part, been attributed to the differences in reproductive hormone profiles between men and women. Many studies have shown that anterior knee (AK) laxity and the rate of non-contact ACL injuries vary across the menstrual cycle, but these data are inconsistent. Similarly, several studies have investigated the potential protective effect of hormonal contraceptives on non-contact ACL injuries, but their conclusions are also variable. Th

Red Scrotum Syndrome Treatment with Pregabalin: A Case Series.

Red scrotum syndrome (RSS) (also known as male genital dysesthesia) is a rarely recognized entity characterized by scrotal erythema accompanied by a burning sensation, pain, hyperesthesia/dysesthesia, increased temperature and pruritus. Although its physiopathology is unknown, it has increasingly been associated with chronic topical steroid use in the male genital area. Treatment is challenging and no standardized treatment is currently available. Because current treatment relies on case reports and small case series, the need for more information about drug efficacy in RSS is warranted. The a

Severe psoriasis entering remission after treatment for latent tuberculosis with isoniazid: Report of two cases.

Psoriasis is a multifactorial systemic disease with predominantly cutaneous manifestations. The role of tuberculosis infection in the pathogenesis of psoriasis has not been consistently proven. Current guidelines recommend screening for tuberculosis infection in any patient with psoriasis when the initiation of biologic therapy is being considered. Isoniazid is an antibiotic with high bactericidal effect on replicating mycobacteria and constitutes the most commonly prescribed treatment for latent tuberculosis infection. Here, we report two cases of patients with psoriasis who presented at our
