The Relation Between Psychopathy and Sexual Aggression: A Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Psychopathy is a multifaceted, hierarchical construct that has been linked to aggression and antisocial behavior. The triarchic model of psychopathy comprises three underlying, distinct trait domains: boldness, disinhibition, and meanness. Understanding how psychopathy at general and factor levels relates to sexual aggression is critical given its connection and the serious repercussions of sexual aggression. METHOD: This preregistered meta-analysis (k = 117) examined the relationship between psychopathy at the total construct and triarchic levels and sexual aggression in adult sam

Exposure to Childhood Adversity and Intimate Partner Violence in a Sample of Incarcerated Women in Australia.

Women who use violence represent one of the fastest growing groups within the Australian prisoner population, including Aboriginal women who are more likely to be incarcerated than non-Aboriginal women for violent crimes. Many incarcerated women report histories of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and intimate partner violence. This exploratory study examines baseline data from a sample of 167 women in 3 Western Australia women's prisons enrolled in a gender-specific violent behavior program. It describes their exposure to intimate partner violence, head injury, and childhood adversities.

Remote Assessment of ADHD Symptoms Based on Mobile Game Performance in Children with ADHD: A Proof of Concept.

The use of game-based digital medicine is gaining increasing interest in helping children with ADHD to improve their attention outside the clinical setting. In this process, it is important to continue monitoring children's responses to the use of digital medicine. In this work, we introduce novel digital markers and an analytic pipeline to estimate ADHD-related symptomatic levels during the self-administration of attention games. The digital markers, capturing the children's characteristics of attention and inattention spans, were extracted and translated into clinically-accepted measures of

Offspring irritability: associations with parental psychopathology and personality.

Although there are well-established correlates and outcomes of irritability, there are fewer studies reporting on predictors of the longitudinal course of irritability in youth. The current report examined parent internalizing and externalizing psychopathology and dimensions of personality as predictors of the developmental course of irritability in youth. Offspring irritability was assessed between ages 2 and 10 years using the Irritability Factor from the parent-reported Child Behavior Checklist (N = 570, 53.51% female). Parental psychopathology was assessed with a clinical interview; parent

Global burden of mental health problems among children and adolescents during COVID-19 pandemic: An umbrella review.

Mental health problems among children and adolescents are increasingly reported amidst the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. In this umbrella review, we aimed to synthesize global evidence on the epidemiologic burden and correlates of child and adolescent mental health (CAMH) problems during this pandemic from existing systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Adopting the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology, we evaluated 422 citations and identified 17 eligible reviews with medium to high methodological quality. Most of the reviews reported a high prevalence of anxiety, depression, s

[Treatment of disorders of emotion regulation in the Adolescents Center at the Central Intitute of Mental Health].

Severe disorders of emotion regulation, e.g. in the context of mental illnesses, such as borderline disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and complex posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), often begin in childhood and adolescence and influence the psychosocial development of those affected, often into adulthood. Professional treatment therefore often requires longer term planning, if possible from a single source. The sectorized structure of the current psychiatric healthcare system, however, makes this process more difficult or is even a hindrance and promotes high hospita

Use of Wise Device Technology to Measure Adherence to Hydroxyurea Therapy in Youth With Sickle Cell Disease.

Despite broad support for hydroxyurea (HU) therapy, suboptimal adherence is reported for youth with sickle cell disease. Valid adherence measurement is crucial to understanding the relationship between medication behavior, disease response, and patient-centered health outcomes. The current pilot study examined the feasibility of the Wise electronic device for longitudinal HU adherence measurement in a sample of 36 youths prescribed HU. The study also explored the association between HU adherence, as measured by the Wise device, with other adherence measures (ie, family report, lab values, pill

Designing Effective Digital Advertisements to Prevent Online Consumption of Child Sexual Exploitation Material.

The necessity of developing effective and innovative primary prevention strategies is a pressing objective in stemming the harm caused by the production and consumption of child sexual exploitation material (CSEM). Digital media interventions - including search engine advertisements - hold promise as prevention tools to deflect potential users away from CSEM and redirect them to therapeutic services. This study aimed to establish an evidence base for effective advertising in this context by creating mock-up helpline advertisements and testing them in focus groups and interviews with staff and

Prosthetic rehabilitation of a child with X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia: a case report and 12-month follow-up.

The hereditary condition known as ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is characterized by the absence of or a defect in 2 or more ectodermally derived structures such as skin, nails, hair, sweat glands, or teeth. Patients with this disorder usually present with reduced salivary gland function and absence of some or all teeth, which compromises orofacial function and development. In addition, children with ED usually experience difficulty in social interactions because of their appearance. This article reviews previously published case reports pertaining to ED and describes oral rehabilitation with remov

The "First 1,000 Days+" as Key Contributor to the Double Burden of Malnutrition.

Growth from conception through age 2 years, the "First 1,000 days," is important for long-term health of the growing fetus and child and is influenced by several factors including breastfeeding and complementary feeding. Low- and middle-income countries face a complicated array of factors that influence healthy growth, ranging from high food insecurity, poor sanitation, limited prenatal or neonatal care, and high levels of poverty that exacerbate the "vicious cycle" associated with intergenerational promotion of growth retardation. It is now well recognized that the period prior to conception,

Customized Hybrid Bluegrass Appliance: An Innovative Technique.

Oral habits in the form of thumb sucking and tongue thrusting are commonly learned patterns of behavior seen in preschool children and they are associated with anxiety, fear, hunger, oral pressure, and sleep. Chronic practice can cause dentoalveolar, perioral problems, and atypical root resorption (ARR) of anterior primary teeth. The ARR is provoked by the thumb sucking habit, and leads to early loss of anterior primary teeth. The early loss of anterior tooth may result in speech and masticatory problems, and psychological disturbance to the child. Hence, pediatric dentists play a crucial role

Intergenerational similarity in callous-unemotional traits: Contributions of hostile parenting and household chaos during adolescence.

Extant research has examined both genetic and environmental risk involved in the transmission of callous-unemotional traits in youth populations, yet no study has examined the intergenerational similarity of these traits between parents and their offspring. The current study examined whether the association between parent callous-unemotional traits and child callous-unemotional traits was mediated by parenting behavior and whether this association was moderated by household environment. Participants included 115 dyads of adolescents (48% female; Mean age=13.97) and their primary caregivers (87

Developmental Differences in Functioning in Youth With Social Phobia.

Social phobia (SoP) in youth may manifest differently across development as parent involvement in their social lives changes and social and academic expectations increase. This cross-sectional study investigated whether self-reported and parent-reported functioning in youth with SoP changes with age in social, academic, and home/family domains. Baseline anxiety impairment data from 488 treatment-seeking anxiety-disordered youth (ages 7-17, N = 400 with a SoP diagnosis) and their parents were gathered using the Child Anxiety Impact Scale and were analyzed using generalized estimating equations.
