Mycoplasma genitalium Macrolide and Fluoroquinolone Resistance Detection and Clinical Implications in a Selected Cohort in New Zealand.

Mycoplasma genitalium has been associated with infections of the genitourinary tract, and prevalence is secondary to Chlamydia trachomatis The clinical observation of increasing treatment failure indicating antibiotic resistance, especially in cases of recurrent urethritis, has been confirmed by molecular testing. Mutations in the 23S rRNA gene can cause macrolide resistance, and topoisomerase/gyrase mutations can cause fluoroquinolone resistance. In this study, 115 M. genitalium DNA-positive samples were analyzed. Eighty-nine (77.4%) samples had a 23S rRNA mutation present, and 26 (22.6%) wer

Defining research priorities for bacterial sexually transmitted infections in Canada.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to define priority areas for research on chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis in Canada through the use of a consensus method. METHODS: A modified Delphi method was conducted, consisting of two online surveys and an in-person meeting. Participants included people working in bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) across Canada, including clinicians, policy-makers, public health practitioners, and researchers. RESULTS: Consensus was achieved regarding the most important priority topics in bacterial STI research in Canada, within five general priority areas: the epi

Interferon-ε protects the female reproductive tract from viral and bacterial infection.

The innate immune system senses pathogens through pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs) that signal to induce effector cytokines, such as type I interferons (IFNs). We characterized IFN-ε as a type I IFN because it signaled via the Ifnar1 and Ifnar2 receptors to induce IFN-regulated genes. In contrast to other type I IFNs, IFN-ε was not induced by known PRR pathways; instead, IFN-ε was constitutively expressed by epithelial cells of the female reproductive tract (FRT) and was hormonally regulated. Ifn-ε-deficient mice had increased susceptibility to infection of the FRT by the common sexually t

Simultaneous detection of seven sexually transmitted agents in human immunodeficiency virus-infected Brazilian women by multiplex polymerase chain reaction.

We determined the prevalence of seven clinically important pathogens that cause sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma genitalium, Trichomonas vaginalis, herpes simplex virus 1 [HSV-1], HSV-2, and Treponema pallidum), by using a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (M-PCR) in samples from Brazilian woman infected with human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) and uninfected Brazilian women (controls). The M-PCR assay identified all STIs tested for and surprisingly, occurred association between the control and STIs. This association was prob

The Atlanta Urban Adolescent Network Study: a network view of STD prevalence.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the epidemiology of multiple infections in teenagers and their contacts. GOAL: To demonstrate a network approach to the prevalence of STDs/HIV. STUDY DESIGN: A community-based network study of ethnographically representative adolescents. RESULTS: Of the 512 interviewees, 90% of the boys and 80% of the girls were sexually active with many partners and exhibited age-assortative mixing. Prevalences of gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HSV-2 were high, but syphilis, Hepatitis C and HIV were virtually absent. The prevalence faced by subgroups differed from overall prevalence. CON

Pseudomembranous conjunctivitis following bone marrow transplantation: immunopathological and ultrastructural study of one case.

Pseudomembranous conjunctivitis (PMC) is a rare ophthalmic lesion usually caused by infectious agents such as streptococcus, Klebsiella, Chlamydia, or adenovirus. It can also be associated with skin lesions of toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) and graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD). We report the pathological study of a patient with PMC and GVHD who had a conjunctival biopsy before death. This allowed us to differentiate this form of PMC from PMC of infectious origin, and to find within the epithelium characteristic features of acute GVHD and mononuclear cells expressing natural-killer markers. Diagnostic specificity of immunoglobulin M (IgM) response in differentiation Legionnaires' disease from psittacosis.

Specific IgM and IgG antibody responses to Legionella pneumophila (LDB) and Chlamydia psittaci (PSI) in serum specimens from 22 cases of Legionnaires' Disease (LD) were examined by micro-immunofluorescence (IF) tests to explore the diagnostic significance of the IgM antibody response. Serial samples from 5 patients with LD showed greater than or equal to 4-fold changes in IgG antibody against LDB and PSI. All 5 patients possessed IgM antibodies against LDB but not against PSI. In single convalescent serum samples from 17 additional cases, 16 exhibited IgG and 15 showed IgM antibodies against L

[Aetiological studies on viral pneumonia (author's transl)].

401 cases of viral pneumonia diagnosed between January 1973 and August 1975 were investigated serologically by the complement-fixation test. The percentage distribution of the responsible pathogenic organism in this series of cases was as follows: influenza virus A 45.9%, Mycoplasma pneumoniae 19.5%, Coxsackie B viruses 9.2%, cytomegalovirus 7.5% and Chlamydia psittaci 8.5%. The remaining 9.4% cases were caused by adeno, parainfluenza, measles, influenza B, herpes simplex and respiratory syncytial viruses. Influenza virus was found mainly in elderly people (mean age 58.4 years), whilst pneumon

Respiratory diseases of rabbits.

Respiratory diseases are second only to gastroenteric diseases in importance in rabbits. Pasteurellosis is the primary respiratory disease affecting domestic rabbits, but other bacteria (e.g., Bordetella broniseptica and Staphylococcus spp) are significant opportunistic pathogens. The primary manifestations are upper respiratory disease (e.g., rhinitis, sinusitis, conjunctivitis, and dacryocystitis). Various antimicrobials are effective for treatment.

Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening and Positivity in Pregnant Women Living in Areas with High Social Vulnerability Indices.

OBJECTIVES: Pregnant women living in rural areas of the United States are not equitably served by healthcare systems and may be disproportionately affected by sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We examined the impact of location of pregnancy care on STI screening and positivity in a statewide health system. METHODS: Pregnant women seeking care within a statewide health system during 2021-2022 were categorized by location of care at either the main university hospital (urban) or regional (rural) hospitals. We assessed STI screening and positivity for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomonias

Patterns of Sexually Transmitted Infection-Related Testing and Diagnosis by Places of Service, MarketScan Commercial Claims Data, 2023-2024.

BACKGROUND: Understanding where people receive care for sexually transmitted infections (STI) is essential for optimizing STI service delivery. METHODS: Based on the date of service, the first encounter with STI testing or diagnosis for each patient aged ≥15 years was identified using MarketScan commercial claims data from 2023-2024. We identified chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis testing using Current Procedural Terminology codes (CPT) and diagnoses using International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) codes. Encounters were classified as diagnosis encounters if they included an STI diagno

The emergency department visit as an opportunity for sexually transmitted infection screening and linkage to care in early pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate prenatal care (PNC) is linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes, including those related to untreated sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as syphilis. Many populations with low PNC utilization disproportionately access the emergency department (ED). ED visits in early pregnancy may represent a critical opportunity for screening and linkage to PNC. This study aims to evaluate STI screening, diagnosis rates, and access to PNC among pregnant ED patients. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of pregnant individuals who visited a large, urban ED and later delivered th

Acceptability of Multilevel Sexual Health Interventions and Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening and Testing Among Persons With HIV Across Three Clinical Sites in Florida.

INTRODUCTION: The US state of Florida has the third highest rate of HIV and high rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) indicating critical HIV and STI prevention needs remain unmet. To address gaps in the STI care continuum in people with HIV (PWH), evidence-based interventions were implemented across 3 Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP)-funded clinics in Florida between August 2020 and August 2021. Interventions included comprehensive sexual health history (SHH) taking using audio computer-assisted self-interview (ACASI) software, self-collected extragenital gonorrhea and chlamydia

Atypical pneumonia (Review).

Atypical pneumonia encompasses diverse pathogens, such as Chlamydia pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Legionella species, which differ from typical bacterial pneumonia in their extrapulmonary manifestations. Clinical differentiation relies on systemic involvement rather than on standalone symptoms. Despite challenges in distinct diagnosis, syndromic approaches and weighted point systems aid in accurate presumptive diagnoses. Antibiotic treatment, often non-β-lactams due to the unique cell structures of atypical pathogens, targets intracellular processes. Macrolides, tetracyclines, quinolon

Transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-β1) expression in patients with adenomyosis.

OBJECTIVE: Successful measures to address the increasing prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) require practical and accessible education and detection programs. METHODS: The ability to detect Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae may be hindered by a lack of adherence to proper cervical sampling. To address this, we compared the sensitivity and specificity of self-obtained samplings, such as self-collection and first-catch urine samples, to cervical samples taken by a practitioner using the nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) cobas® 4800 for C. trachomatis and N.

Improving sexually transmitted infection screening, testing, and treatment among people with HIV: A mixed method needs assessment to inform a multi-site, multi-level intervention and evaluation plan.

Bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to be a worsening public health concern in the United States (US). Though the national incidence of HIV infection has decreased over recent years, that of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis have not. Despite national recommendations on prevention, screening, and treatment of these STIs, these practices have not been standardized. Nine Health Resources and Services Administration Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program funded clinics across 3 US jurisdictions (Florida, Louisiana, and Washington, DC), were selected as clinical demonstration sites to
