Using machine learning to dissect host kinases required for Leishmania internalization and development.

The Leishmania life cycle alternates between promastigotes, found in the sandfly, and amastigotes, found in mammals. When an infected sandfly bites a host, promastigotes are engulfed by phagocytes (i.e., neutrophils, dendritic cells, and macrophages) to establish infection. When these phagocytes die or break down, amastigotes must be re-internalized to survive within the acidic phagolysosome and establish disease. To define host kinase regulators of Leishmania promastigote and amastigote uptake and survival within macrophages, we performed an image-based kinase regression screen using a panel

Factors Influencing Self-Wound Care Adoption in Singaporean Communities: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

PURPOSE: Managing wounds often requires frequent clinic visits, posing a burden on both patients and the healthcare system. Shared wound care, which encourages patients to manage dressings at home, has emerged as a potential solution. This study investigates factors influencing self-wound care adoption in Singapore. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey involving 328 participants from six primary healthcare centers was conducted. The survey examined demographics, wound characteristics, and perceptions towards shared wound care using a locally validated questionnaire. Parametric tests and logistic

Safety strategies and harm reduction for methamphetamine users in the era of fentanyl contamination: A qualitative analysis.

INTRODUCTION: In the United States, methamphetamine use is increasing and the context of its use has changed, with reports of illicitly manufactured fentanyl being mixed with methamphetamine (either deliberately or inadvertently). We explore risk-mitigating actions taken by people who use drugs to protect their health when using methamphetamine in that context. METHODS: We conducted qualitative interviews with 48 adults (18+) who used methamphetamine in the past three months at two sites in Nevada, USA and two sites in New Mexico, USA. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using

Diversity of kidney care referral pathways in national child health systems of 48 European countries.

BACKGROUND: Primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare services in Europe create complex networks covering pediatric subspecialties, sociology, economics and politics. Two surveys of the European Society for Paediatric Nephrology (ESPN) in 1998 and 2017 revealed substantial disparities of kidney care among European countries. The purpose of the third ESPN survey is to further identify national differences in the conceptualization and organization of European pediatric kidney health care pathways during and outside normal working hours. METHODS: In 2020, a questionnaire was sent to one leading

A participatory approach to move towards a One Health surveillance system for anthrax in Burkina Faso.

The One Health approach calls for collaboration across various sectors and different scales to improve understanding of complex health issues. Regarding epidemiological surveillance, this implies the development of integrated systems that link several surveillance components operating in different domains (human, domestic animals, environment) and involving several actor networks. However, surveillance continues to operate in a very compartmentalized way, with little interaction between sectoral institutions and with the community for the governance and operation of surveillance activities. Can we manipulate brain connectivity? A systematic review of cortico-cortical paired associative stimulation effects.

OBJECTIVE: Cortico-cortical paired associative stimulation (ccPAS) is a form of dual-site transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) entailing a series of single-TMS pulses paired at specific interstimulus intervals (ISI) delivered to distant cortical areas. The goal of this article is to systematically review its efficacy in inducing plasticity in humans focusing on stimulation parameters and hypotheses of underlying neurophysiology. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature from 2009-2023 was undertaken to identify all articles utilizing ccPAS to study brain plasticity and connectivity. S

Exploring gender differences in HIV-related stigma and social support in a low-resource setting: A qualitative study in the Dominican Republic.

HIV-related stigma can affect health by compromising coping and social support. Gender differences in stigma experiences and social support are underexplored, particularly in the Caribbean. We conducted semi-structured interviews (N = 32) with patients at two HIV clinics in the Dominican Republic. Transcripts were coded using qualitative content analysis (deductive and inductive approaches) to identify themes regarding stigma experiences and social support, which were then compared across men and women participants to identify gender differences. While both men and women described experienced

Co-designing with adults with acquired neurological disability in the community: a scoping review protocol.

IntroductionCo-designing healthcare research and health services is becoming increasingly prominent. Co-design invites people with disability to leverage their lived experience knowledge to improve service provision, as well as ensuring meaningful and relevant research. Given the emerging nature of the use of co-design with adults with neurological disability, well-defined guidelines on best practice are yet to be developed. The aim of this scoping review is to synthesise available peer-reviewed literature which investigates the use of co-design in research and/or service development with adul

The Childhood Origins of Climate-Induced Mobility and Immobility.

The literature on climate exposures and human migration has focused largely on assessing short-term responses to temperature and precipitation shocks. In this paper, we suggest that this common coping strategies model can be extended to account for mechanisms that link environmental conditions to migration behavior over longer periods of time. We argue that early-life climate exposures may affect the likelihood of migration from childhood through early adulthood by influencing parental migration, community migration networks, human capital development, and decisions about household resource al

Circulating MicroRNAs, Polychlorinated Biphenyls, and Environmental Liver Disease in the Anniston Community Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) exposures have been associated with liver injury in human cohorts, and steatohepatitis with liver necrosis in model systems. MicroRNAs (miRs) maintain cellular homeostasis and may regulate the response to environmental stress. OBJECTIVES: We tested the hypothesis that specific miRs are associated with liver disease and PCB exposures in a residential cohort. METHODS: Sixty-eight targeted hepatotoxicity miRs were measured in archived serum from 734 PCB-exposed participants in the cross-sectional Anniston Community Health Survey. Necrotic and other liv

Microbial and abiotic factors of flooded soil that affect redox biodegradation of lindane.

Pollution induces pressure to soil microorganism; and conversely, the degradation of pollutants is reported largely regulated by the soil microbiome assembly in situ. However, the specific-dependent core taxa of degraders were barely confirmed, which is not conducive to improving the soil remediation strategy. Taking pollution of a typical organochlorine pesticide (OCP), lindane, as an example, we explored the microbial community assembly in flooded soils and simultaneously quantified the corresponding dynamics of typical soil redox processes. Contrasting initial status of microbial diversity

Provider Care Team Segregation and Operative Mortality Following Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that Black patients die more frequently following coronary artery bypass grafting than their White counterparts for reasons not fully explained by disease severity or comorbidity. To examine whether provider care team segregation within hospitals contributes to this inequity, we analyzed national Medicare data. METHODS: Using national Medicare data, we identified beneficiaries who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting at hospitals where this procedure was performed on at least 10 Black and 10 White patients between 2008 and 2014 (n=12 646). After determining

Association of living arrangements with happiness attributes among older adults.

BACKGROUND: In Korea, along with the rapid aging of the population, older adults' living arrangements have changed in various ways. In particularly, the happiness of older adults living alone warrants attention because they are more vulnerable to unhappiness than those living with families are. This study reports on the level of happiness among older adults in Korean and examines the potential mediating roles of depressive symptoms, present health status, socio-physical environment, social support networks, and social activities, and happiness in three different living arrangements, older adul

Prevalence of medically unsupervised activated charcoal use a cause for concern in celiac disease?

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes an intolerance to gluten. Owing to hidden sources, lack of clear labeling, and cross-contamination, it is not uncommon for individuals with celiac disease to inadvertently ingest gluten. A strict gluten-free diet is the only treatment. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to identify the frequency of activated charcoal use in celiac disease as a purported remedy despite the lack of literature on the safety and efficacy of the practice and to elucidate the manner in which using activated charcoal as a treatment for acute glu

Emergence of antibiotic-resistant Mycoplasma genitalium as the cause of non-gonococcal urethritis in male patients at a sexually transmitted infection clinic.

Mycoplasma genitalium is the cause of an emerging sexually transmitted infection (STI) with high propensity for development of antimicrobial resistance. In a prevalence study conducted at the public STI service in Hong Kong, the first void urine samples of 38 (8%) of 493 male patients with non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) tested positive for M. genitalium using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Patients with M. genitalium infection were younger [31 vs 33 years, odds ratio (OR) 0.96, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.93-0.996; P=0.03], more likely to present with urethral discharge (
