Finger joint laxity, number of previous pregnancies and pregnancy induced back pain in a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: General joint hypermobility is estimated to affect about 10% of the population and is a prerequisite of heritable connective tissue disorders where fragile connective tissue is a prominent feature. Pregnancy induced back pain is common whereas about 10% of women still have disabling pain several years after childbirth. The pathogenesis of the pain condition is uncertain, although several risk factors are suggested including general joint hypermobility. In the present study, the possible association of peripheral joint mobility in early pregnancy on the incidence of back pain with o

Autoimmune thyroiditis in antinuclear antibody positive children without rheumatologic disease.

BACKGROUND: Children are commonly referred to a pediatric rheumatology center for the laboratory finding of an Anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) of undetermined significance. Previous studies regarding adult rheumatology patients have supported an association between ANA and anti-thyroid antibodies, with the prevalence of thyroid antibodies being significantly higher in patients referred to a rheumatology center for an ANA without evidence of connective tissue disease compared to the general population. The purpose of the present study was to determine the frequency of thyroid antibodies in children

Human amnion contains a novel laminin variant, laminin 7, which like laminin 6, covalently associates with laminin 5 to promote stable epithelial-stromal attachment.

Stable attachment of external epithelia to the basement membrane and underlying stroma is mediated by transmembrane proteins such as the integrin alpha6beta4 and bullous pemphigoid antigen 2 within the hemidesmosomes along the basolateral surface of the epithelial cell and their ligands that include a specialized subfamily of laminins. The laminin 5 molecule (previously termed kalinin/nicein/epiligrin) is a member of this epithelial-specific subfamily. Laminin 5 chains are not only considerably truncated within domains III-VI, but are also extensively proteolytically processed in vitro and in

A study of the perineurium in peripheral nerve pathology.

The response of the perineurium to the following experimental systems was investigated by light and electron microscopy: nerve crush, cold lesion and microinjection of (a) histamine liberator, (b) potassium cyanide, (c) lysophosphatidyl choline (LPC). Where myelin breakdown occurred, lipid globules were seen within Schwann cells, macrophages and also perineurial cells. Where increased vascular permeability occurred, proteinaceous material leaked from endoneurial vessels into the endoneurial space and later appeared between perineurial laminae. It is suggested that the normal homeostatic functi

A quantitative histologic study of the normal human adult soft palate.

This study was designed to re-examine the same soft palates studied qualitatively in a previous investigation (Kuehn and Kahane, 1990), using a true-color image analysis system. The quantified measures of the areas of specific tissue types are reported. The results indicate that: (a) tendinous tissue is prominent anteriorly and comprises about 10% of total tissue in that region, (b) the relative proportion of glandular and connective tissue is fairly uniform across the length of the soft palate, averaging 22% and 36% respectively, (c) muscle tissue shows a pattern of increasing then decreasing

Age dependent collective trafficking of tissue resident T cells in zebrafish.

UNLABELLED: How tissue-resident T cells are organized to provide immune surveillance in healthy peripheral tissues and how this organization changes with age remains largely unknown. Here we use intravital imaging in zebrafish to identify a previously undescribed, appendage-specific mode of adaptive immune organization: fin-resident T cells undergo coordinated collective "streaming" migration within connective tissue compartments. T cells colonize the developing fin prior to lymphatic or blood vessel formation, indicating that initial residency can be established independently of classical imm

Vascular type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Vascular type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), also known as EDS type IV (NIM#130050) is a life-threatening autosomal dominant inherited disorder of connective tissue, caused by mutations of the COL3A1 gene. Vascular EDS causes severe fragility of connective tissues with arterial and intestinal ruptures and complications of surgical and radiological treatment, and is of particular importance to medical professionals of many specialties: surgeons, internists, radiologists, and obstetricians. An accurate diagnosis may help in the management of visceral complications. In addition, when a family i

Pathological characteristics of mucopolysaccharidosis VI in the rat.

The histological and electron microscopical characteristics of the pathology of rats with arylsulphatase B-deficient mucopolysaccharidosis (mucopolysaccharidosis VI; MPS VI) were investigated. In affected animals, intracytoplasmic vacuoles were prominent in chondrocytes, the macrophage system, cardiac valve fibroblasts, cornea, connective tissues, vascular smooth muscle cells and uterine stromal cells. Tissues containing glucosaminoglycans stored in lysosomes were positive to Mowry's colloidal iron and alcian blue stains. By electron microscopy, the lysosomes were seen to be distended by elect

Thrombocytosis in a patient with NUDT15 homozygous variant: clues in clinical pharmacogenetics.

A female patient diagnosed with an undifferentiated connective tissue disorder (UCTD) experienced progressive symptoms including hair loss, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain accompanied by haematological changes of anaemia, absolute neutropenia with thrombocytosis following 7 weeks of azathioprine therapy. Consequently, azathioprine was discontinued, resulted in hematologic recovery and hair regrowth. Genetic analysis revealed the presence of an NUDT15 polymorphism, indicating impaired thiopurine metabolism. Hair loss was the first symptom, above all others, indicating an early onset of a

CTGF (CCN2): a multifaceted mediator in breast cancer progression and therapeutic targeting.

Breast cancer, with its diverse subtypes like ER-positive, HER-2-positive, and triple-negative, presents complex challenges demanding personalized treatment approaches. The intricate interplay of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors underscores its status as a primary contributor to cancer-related fatalities in women globally. Understanding the molecular drivers specific to each subtype is crucial for developing effective therapies. In this landscape, connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), also referred to as cellular communication network factor 2 (CCN2), emerges as a significant pl

CCN2: A potential contributor to gingival overgrowth.

BACKGROUND: Fibrotic responses in the gingiva are characterized by their hyperproliferative nature instead of scar tissue formation. Clinically, these conditions appear as "gingival overgrowth" (GO), which can be of drug-induced or genetic origin. Despite surgical removal, GO can recur. Therefore, non-invasive methods of treating GO are required. In other fibrotic systems, the matricellular protein CCN2 represents a potential therapeutic target. However, CCN2 has been relatively understudied in the context of GO. HIGHLIGHT: Herein, we describe what is known regarding CCN2 expression in GO and

Considerations for Selecting Root Coverage Techniques in the Anterior Mandible.

The anterior mandible is the most challenging anatomical site for performing periodontal plastic surgeries. Increased demands for optimal root coverage and esthetic outcomes contribute to the development of pedicle flap-based surgical solutions, in contrast to the predominantly used free gingival graft. The aims of this study were to (1) summarize the current literature to identify the mostused techniques, indications, and their efficacy, and (2) provide a decision table for surgeons to navigate through the selection of appropriate techniques. Four main approaches were identified: free gingiva

Assessing the effectiveness of advanced platelet rich fibrin in treating gingival recession: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The literature lacks comprehensive evidence on the efficacy of advanced platelet rich fibrin(A-PRF) in treating gingival recession. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of A-PRF in the treatment of gingival recession. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We adhered to the guidelines of PRISMA in searching the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus to include all the eligible studies according to the prespecified inclusion and exclusion criteria. We conducted our search up to February 28, 2024.

Unusual overlap of systemic sclerosis with Takayasu arteritis.

Overlap syndromes are diseases that meet the criteria of two or more rheumatic diseases. In this case report, a woman in her 20s presented with a constellation of symptoms, including skin thickening, Raynaud's phenomenon, hypertension, absent pulse in both lower limbs with bilateral renal artery bruit. The antinuclear antibody profile revealed Scl-70 positivity. CT thorax identified early interstitial lung disease, and nailfold capillaroscopy showed severe capillary loss. CT angiogram features were suggestive of Takayasu arteritis. Notably, there have been only four documented cases of systemi

Rapid progression from MDS to AML with gastric submucosal tumour as an extramedullary infiltration.

We present a rare case of myeloid sarcoma in the stomach of an elderly woman initially diagnosed with anaemia. Myeloid sarcoma, an unusual extramedullary manifestation of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), primarily affects lymph nodes, bones, spine and skin, with gastrointestinal involvement being infrequent. Despite normal results from the initial endoscopy, a follow-up examination after 4 months revealed multiple submucosal gastric tumours. These developments coincided with worsening of anaemia and an increase in peripheral myeloblasts. Pathological evaluation and immunohistochemical staining c

Rare case of corneal keloid following radial keratotomy for myopia.

An adult male in his 50s presented with complaints of glare and gradual, painless, progressive diminution of vision in the right eye (RE). Visual acuity in RE was noted to be 2/60, and slit lamp biomicroscopy revealed a pearly grey-white elevated corneal opacity measuring 4 mm × 3 mm, obscuring the visual axis. There was no history of ocular trauma or infection. The patient had undergone bilateral radial keratotomy for myopia correction 25 years ago. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography imaging demonstrated increased corneal thickness of 1080 µm at the site of lesion and the height of
