Long-term results of olecranon fractures treated using the XS nail® system.

PURPOSE: Olecranon fractures are particularly vulnerable to distraction and subsequent fracture dislocation due to the high tensile forces. Surgical treatment aims at reducing the fracture and restoring the anatomical joint surface condition, as well as neutralizing the strain inhibiting fracture healing. The XS nail® (Intercus GmbH, Bad Blankenberg, Germany), an intramedullary implant exerting compression across the entire fracture surface, unlike plates, leaves a minimal extra-cortical profile, and can be secured with threaded locking wires, thereby retaining the anatomical reduction without

Can Additional Facet Joint Block Improve the Clinical Outcome of Kyphoplasty for Acute Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures?

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) has been reported to provide a favorable analgesic effect for pain caused by osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs). However, a systematic review demonstrated that pain relief was only reported for approximately 86% of kyphoplasty treatments. OBJECTIVES: To explore whether an additional facet joint block (FJB) can minimize pain and improve the clinical outcome of PKP in patients with acute OVCFs. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTING: All data were from Honghui Hospital in Xi'an. METHODS: According to the inclusion and exclusion c

Four-hour voiding observation with provocation test reveals significant abnormalities of bladder function in newborns with spinal dysraphism.

INTRODUCTION: Four-hour voiding observation with provocation test (VOP) using a scale, a damp detector and ultrasound for determination of residuals, is an easily performed non-invasive method for the evaluation of bladder function in newborns. Neonatal bladder function evaluated with VOP has been described for healthy newborns (HN) but not for children with spinal dysraphism (SD), for whom early bladder evaluation is essential for decisions regarding Clean Intermittent Catheterization and follow-up. The aim of the present study was to describe voiding observation with provocation test in newb

Elastoplasty: A Silicon Polymer as a New Filling Material for Kyphoplasty in Comparison to PMMA.

BACKGROUND: Painful vertebral compression fractures (VCF) caused by osteoporosis are a common health problem in the elderly population. If conservative treatments are unsuccessful, surgical treatments like vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty are recommended. But the use of Polymethylmethacrylat (PMMA) bone cement for augmentation surgery is associated with risks. OBJECTIVES: Evaluation of the effectiveness and safety of a newly developed silicon polymer (VK100) that can be used instead of PMMA bone cement for kyphoplasty treatments. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study of 30 patients comparing the

Radial Tiny Golden Angle UTE (tyGA-UTE) for Cardiac MRI in the Small Animal Model.

Robust cardiorespiratory motion correction is critical for high-quality ultra-high-field (UHF) preclinical cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Whereas radial tiny golden angle (tyGA) sampling, data-driven self-gating (sg), compressed sensing (CS), and ultrashort echo time (UTE) are individually well-established techniques, their integration into a unified acquisition and reconstruction pipeline, together with systematic validation at 11.7 T remains insufficiently explored. This study presents and validates a UHF-optimized tyGA-based UTE workflow that enables high-temporal-resolution slid

Clinical characteristics and outcomes in patients with traumatic brain injury in China: a prospective, multicentre, longitudinal, observational study.

BACKGROUND: Large-scale studies are required to better characterise traumatic brain injury (TBI) and to identify the most effective treatment approaches for TBI. However, evidence is scarce and mostly originates from high-income countries. We aimed to describe the existing care for patients with TBI and the outcomes in China. METHODS: The Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in TBI (CENTER-TBI) China registry is a prospective, multicentre, longitudinal, observational study done in 56 neurosurgical centres across China. We collected data of patients who were admitted to ho

Melodic interval perception with acoustic and electric hearing in bimodal and single-sided deaf cochlear implant listeners.

Two notes sounded sequentially elicit melodic intervals and contours that form the basis of melody. Many previous studies have characterized pitch perception in cochlear implant (CI) users to be poor which may be due to the limited spectro-temporal resolution and/or spectral warping with electric hearing compared to acoustic hearing (AH). Poor pitch perception in CIs has been shown to distort melodic interval perception. To characterize this interval distortion, we recruited CI users with either normal (single sided deafness, SSD) or limited (bimodal) AH in the non-implanted ear. The contralat

Adverse Events During Intrahospital Transport of Critically Ill Children: A Systematic Review.

Intrahospital transport of a critically ill patient is often required to achieve a diagnostic and/or therapeutic objective. However, clinicians who recommend a procedure that requires transport are often not fully aware of the risks of transport. Clinicians involved in the care of critically ill children may therefore benefit from a clear enumeration of adverse events that have occurred during transport, risk factors for those events, and guidance for event prevention. The objective of this review was to collect all published harm and adverse events that occurred in critically ill children in

Adverse events in radiation oncology: A case series from wake up safe, the pediatric anesthesia quality improvement initiative.

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy in pediatric patients often requires anesthesia and poses environmental challenges. Monitoring must be done remotely to limit radiation exposure to the provider. Airway access can be limited by masks or frames. Care is often delivered in relatively inaccessible locations in the hospital. While individual institutions have reported their outcomes, this case series aims to review a multicenter registry of significant adverse events and make recommendations for improved care. METHODS: Wake Up Safe: The Pediatric Quality Improvement Initiative maintains a multisite,

Early Results of Duplex-Guided Transradial Artery Fistuloplasties.

BACKGROUND: Although arteriovenous fistulae (AVFs) are the preferred mode of hemodialysis access because of their high patency rates, they are associated with an appreciable rate of nonmaturation. Balloon-assisted maturation (BAM) has been described to treat this issue. BAM is defined as repeated sequential graduated dilatation of the outflow vein. This study aims to evaluate the short-term complications of using the radial artery as an access for BAM procedures and fisutloplasties. Transradial access was used preferentially with multiple lesions in the AVF that were difficult to access with a
