Prevalence of intestinal parasites in pet dogs in the United States.

To determine the national, regional, and age-related prevalence of intestinal parasites in dogs presenting to veterinarians in the United States, we reviewed the results of examination via zinc sulfate centrifugal flotation of 1,199,293 canine fecal samples submitted to Antech Diagnostics in 2006. The most commonly identified intestinal parasites were ascarids (2.2%), hookworms (2.5%), whipworms (1.2%), Giardia (4.0%), and Cystoisospora (4.4%). With the exception of whipworms, intestinal parasites were more commonly identified in dogs less than 6 months of age (29.6% positive) as compared to t

Heart rate variability analysis allows early asphyxia detection in ovine fetus.

Fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring is commonly used to predict asphyxia but clinical and experimental studies have questioned its diagnostic value. We examined the usefulness of fetal heart rate variability (fHRV) measures in detecting early asphyxia using chronically instrumented fetal sheep under normoxic (n = 6) and asphyxic conditions (3 umbilical cord occlusions, n = 6). The occlusions consistently led to pH decreases from 7.35 +/- 0.01 to 7.09 +/- 0.03 ( P < .05). FHR showed biphasic deceleration during each occlusion, associated with increasing arterial blood pressure ( P < .05). RMSSD,

Prevalence of Cryptosporidium infection in camels (Camelus dromedarius) in a slaughterhouse in Iran.

Cryptosporidiosis is a zoonotic protozoan disease of worldwide distribution, affecting a wide range of vertebrate hosts. Most data on the biology, distribution pattern, pathology and prevalence of cryptosporidial infection in farm animals is restricted to cattle, sheep and goats. Limited data is available in other domestic herbivores including camel. Numerous camels (Camelus dromedarius) are raised in the semi-arid regions of Iran. Although camel is acknowledged as a potential source of contamination, little is known with regards to the prevalence of Cryptosporidium in this population except a

Rabies in the Mongolian steppes.

Historically, rabies in Mongolia has been connected to the specific steppe and forest-steppe landscapes, known as the Mongolian steppes. The main reservoirs of the rabies virus (RABV) are the wolf, red fox and corsac fox. Fox rabies has been reported in Mongolia since the early 1960s. Eleven human rabies cases (0.4 per million inhabitants) were reported in Mongolia from 1994-2004. Wild animals predominated as a source of human infection: five people died following wolf bites, two were exposed to foxes, and four to dogs. From 1996-2004, 1,273 rabid animals were reported (about 140 per year). Ca

The action of albendazole on hydatid cysts in sheep experimentally infected with eggs of Echinococcus granulosus.

According to the Brazilian Agricultural Ministry, the prevalence of cystic echinococcosis in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil has decreased between 1990 and 1998, possibly due to the common use of albendazole to control parasites in sheep. Therefore, albendazole (ABZ) action was tested on hydatid cysts of sheep experimentally infected with eggs of Echinococcus granulosus in Uruguaiana County (RS) with the aim of evaluating the observed changes in the parasite's prevalence. The sheep were divided into three groups of 15 animals each and treated as follows. Group 01 was a control (without

Lesbian mothering in the context of intimate partner violence.

Twenty-four lesbian mothers (12 African American, 9 White, and 3 Latina) who had experienced physical abuse by a same-sex partner were interviewed. Three types of IPV were found: intimate terrorism, situational violence, and mutual violent control. Further, relationships between mothers/abusers, mothers/children, and abusers/children were examined. Regarding relationships with abusers, 71% of mothers reported lengthy sagas, 17% had worked it out, and 13% made a clean break from the abuser. Regarding relationships with their children, 48% of mothers hid the violence, 26% minimized it, and 26% o

Frequency and types of partner violence among Mexican American college women.

OBJECTIVE AND PARTICIPANTS: The authors studied the prevalence of partner violence, by type, among Mexican American college women aged 18 to 35 years (N = 149; response rate = 85%). RESULTS: Twelve percent of women who reported a dating partner in the past year were physically or sexually assaulted, 12.1% were stalked, and 9.1% scored as psychologically abused. Among those experiencing partner violence, almost half experienced stalking and 89% reported psychological abuse. Few women (25%) who experienced physical violence believed violence was a problem in their relationship. CONCLUSIONS: Pa

Effects of climate change on animal and zoonotic helminthiases.

Current knowledge of animal and zoonotic helminthiases in which effects of climate change have been detected is reviewed. Climate variables are able to affect the prevalence, intensity and geographical distribution of helminths, directly influencing free-living larval stages and indirectly influencing mainly invertebrate, but also vertebrate, hosts. The impact of climate change appears to be more pronounced in trematodes, and is mainly shown by increased cercarial production and emergence associated with global warming. Fascioliasis, schistosomiasis (S. japonicum) and cercarial dermatitis caus

Babesiosis in Italy: an overview.

Babesiosis is a tick-transmitted disease caused by hematotropic parasites of the genus Babesia. Tick-borne diseases (TBD) have increasingly been recognized in the world as public health problems. The piroplasms are transmitted by ticks and are able to infect a wide variety of vertebrate hosts which are competent in maintaining the transmission cycle. Babesiosis occurrence is usually linked to seasonal variations that affect the vector, but climatic changes have not been common in the subtropical regions of Italy, especially during the last few years. This paper is aimed at compiling informatio

Bull breeding soundness evaluation in Southern Africa.

The motivation for and process leading up to the publication of a new bull breeding soundness certification standard endorsed by the South African Veterinary Association is described. The veterinary certificate of bull breeding soundness and explanatory notes and minimum standards are shown. The first component of the certificate is a declaration by the veterinarian that the bull complies with the minimum standards set for examinations for the selected purpose, these being for use as a natural service sire, as a donor of semen for distribution, and for insurance purposes. This is followed by t

Exotic pets are new allergenic sources: allergy to iguana.

Although furry animals are known sources of respiratory allergy, scaly animals are assumed not to be allergenic. Exotic animals such as iguanas are becoming increasingly common pets. Nevertheless, these animals are not suspected to be allergenic. We present the case of a 42-year-old woman suffering from allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma caused by a pet iguana. Clear IgE-sensitization and respiratory allergy to iguana scales is demonstrated, suggesting that scaly pets should be taken into account as possible allergenic sources.

[Methods and tools for parasite differentiation within the genus Trichinella].

This review summarizes the major biological, biochemical and molecular methods which have been developed during last 20 years to distinguish parasites of the genus Trichinella. From the time of the discovery of Trichinella in 1835 until the 1970, it was assumed that trichinellosis was caused by a single species of parasite, Trichinella spiralis. Many biological parameters have been compared to differentiate the parasite, such as host specificity, geographical distribution, reproductive abilities, nurse cell development and resistance to freezing. Now, investigators realize that the genus Trich

Molecular epizootiology of rabies associated with terrestrial carnivores in Mexico.

Epizootiological patterns of rabies are described, using antigenic and genetic analysis of samples obtained from infected domestic and wild mammals in 20 Mexican states during 1976-2002. Two independent origins are suggested for rabies in Mexican carnivores. One group shares ancestry with canine rabies, while the other group appears to share a common origin with bat rabies in North America. More than 12 sublineages were found in rabid dog populations, suggesting at least six major spatio-temporal foci. Coyote rabies was found as independent enzootic foci that probably emerged via spillover fro

Epidemiology of echinococcosis.

BACKGROUND: Various species and infraspecific forms of the cestode genus Echinococcus are causative agents of human echinococcosis. Pathology, epidemiology and geographical occurrence vary widely between the different Echinococcus taxa. As a general rule, those forms of echinococcosis that are transmitted mainly by wild animals are rather rare, due to limited contact between humans and wildlife. This is the case with alveolar echinococcosis (AE) caused by Echinococcus multilocularis, the 'fox tapeworm' (except in regions where domestic dogs are heavily involved in the lifecycle), and for the S

Cases of scrapie with unusual features in Norway and designation of a new type, Nor98.

Five cases of scrapie with unusual features have been diagnosed in Norway since 1998. The affected sheep showed neurological signs dominated by ataxia, and had the PrP genotypes homozygous A136 H154 Q171/ A136H154Q171 or heterozygous A136H154Q171/A136R154Q171, which are rarely associated with scrapie. Brain histopathology revealed neuropil vacuolisation essentially in the cerebellar and cerebral cortices; vacuolation was less prominent in the brainstem, and no lesions were observed at the level of the obex. The deposits of PrPSc were mainly in the cortex of the cerebellum and cerebrum, and no

Do protection orders affect the likelihood of future partner violence and injury?

BACKGROUND: Approximately 20% of U.S. women who experience intimate partner violence (IPV) annually obtain a civil protection order (CPO). The effect of these orders on future abuse has been estimated in only a few studies, with mixed results. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of a CPO on the risk of future self-reported IPV and injury. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study of 448 adult female Seattle WA residents with IPV between October 1997 and December 1998, interviews were conducted at baseline, 5 months, and 9 months after the index incident. Odds ratios (ORs) est

Tularemia.

Tularemia is a rare but potentially fatal disease that develops in numerous wild and domestic animals, including lagomorphs, rodents, cats, and humans. The disease occurs throughout much of the United States and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute febrile illness, particularly when risk factors such as contact with wild mammals or tick exposure are present. Veterinarians may be at increased risk of acquiring tularemia from contact with infected animals, but standard precautions should greatly reduce this risk. Outbreaks of tularemia warrant investigation, especially giv

Fascioliasis among live and slaugthered animals in nine centers of Dakahlia Governorate.

Fascioliasis is an important zoonotic disease. Infected animals are the main source for human fascioliasis. Consequently, this work clarifies the status of animal fascioliasis in Dakahlia centers based on parasitological examination of cows, buffaloes, sheep and goats. The overall rates of infection were 12.31%, 9.73%, 17.84% and 5.40% respectively. The mean eggs per gram stool were 22, 13.6, 148.3 and 8.6 for cows, buffaloes, sheep and goats. The mean numbers of Fasciola worms/liver/animal were 69.1, 62.7 and 208.1 for cows, buffaloes and sheep respectively. The highly infected sheep was in M
