Surface electromyography (sEMG) is part of an instrumented gait assessment, however, the interpretation of the data in a clinically meaningful manner is often limited to the extraction of individual sEMG characteristics. The purpose of this study was to develop an assessment methodology using sEMG time and frequency characteristics extracted using wavelet analyses to provide clinically relevant information in children with cerebral palsy (CP). A retrospective study was conducted with 37 children (16 children with typical development (TD) and 21 children with spastic CP). sEMG signals were exam

Neuromuscular re-education (ie, physical therapy) is often the first treatment given to patients with a partial facial paralysis. The purpose of this paper was to examine whether by repositioning and supporting partially paretic muscles with a fascial sling, one could improve facial movement in patients for whom the benefits of physical therapy had plateaued. Six patients with a history of unilateral, partial facial paralysis were assessed using the Facial Grading System (FGS) and surface electromyography (EMG) recordings of facial muscle activity. Automated facial analysis (AFA) was used to m

OBJECTIVE: Coherence analysis of electromyography (EMG) signals in essential tremor (ET) suggests that tremor in the right and left arm is induced by independent central oscillators. The sensorimotor cortex seems to be part of the tremor-generating neuronal network in ET. Here, we investigated using electroencephalography (EEG) whether the independence of central oscillators in ET is supported by the analysis of cortical activity.
METHODS: In 8 patients with ET, bilateral hand tremor was activated by wrist extension. EMGs from the wrist flexors and extensors were recorded simultaneously with

The present paper aims to investigate two characteristics; task performance and muscular load during skill process for the pen-tablet input system with the mouse input system on the PC in order to determine the comprehensive usability for the pen-tablet system. Two computer tasks were designed for the study: task SL and task PT. Task SL was a repetitive computer-drawing including typical mouse motions such as clicking and drag-dropping. Task PT was a polygon tracing task requiring fine-controlled movements with the input device. Surface electromyography (EMG) and performance data were measured

Spinal accessory nerve palsy leads to painful disability of the shoulder, carrying an uncertain prognosis. We reviewed the long-term outcome in 16 patients who were treated for pain, weakness of active elevation and asymmetry of the shoulder and the neck due to chronic paralysis of the trapezius muscle, as a result of nerve palsy. Of four patients who were treated conservatively, none regained satisfactory function, although two became pain-free. The other 12 patients were treated operatively with transfer of the levator scapulae to the acromion and the rhomboid muscles to the infraspinatus fo

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to identify gender, high body mass index (BMI), age and diabetes mellitus (DM) as independent risk factors (RF) for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and to analyse the strength of association of these factors, both globally and in individual subgroups.
METHODS: We performed a case-control study with 791 CTS cases and 981 controls. Patients were selected from those referred to nerve conduction studies and electromyography in 3 university hospitals and two private services. We calculated the odds ratio between the two groups to analyse the RF. Possible sources o

A 44-year-old man had been admitted for high fever and leg edema on November 1998. By the laboratory data, electromyography, and muscle biopsy, he was diagnosed as having polymyositis. Steroid (prednisolone 60 mg/day) and immunosuppressant (methotrexate 7.5 mg/week) therapy was administered and the symptoms were improved, so he had been followed up in out-patient clinic. After half a year, high fever and leg edema relapsed and erythema on the bilateral forearms appeared, so he was admitted again on January 2000. The symptoms, skin involvement and laboratory data suggested the disease of dermat

A 49-year-old woman acutely developed severe bilateral shoulder pain followed by weakness of the right shoulder girdle muscles. Within a few days, an inability to flex the terminal phalanges of the bilateral thumbs and index fingers emerged. Neurologic examination 1 month after the onset of symptoms showed atrophy of the right shoulder girdle muscles and mild decreased cutaneous sensation in the distribution of the right axillary nerve. Needle electromyography examination at this time showed fibrillation potentials in the right deltoid and bilateral flexor pollicus longus muscles. Recruitment

Scorpion envenomation (SE) represents an agonizing problem in many countries, especially in rural areas. This clinical and neurophysiological study aimed to determine the relative frequency of scorpion envenomation in the Assiut area, in Upper Egypt. Full clinical evaluation was carried out for all children < or =18 y of age included in the study. Electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG) and motor conduction velocity measurements were carried out for a variable number of children. SE was recorded in 302 cases per year in this area. Of these, 78.5% were < or =18 y of age. SE occurre

Neurological manifestations are uncommon in myeloma patients, and subacute polyradiculoneuropathy as the inaugural manifestations of solitary plasmacytoma of bone is exceedingly rare. We report the case of a 52-year-old man who was evaluated for a three-month history of flaccid tetraplegia with a gradually ascending onset and for a deterioration in general health. Electromyography findings were consistent with polyradiculoneuropathy. Laboratory tests showed a moderate amount of a monoclonal IgG-lambda antibody. Findings were normal from a radiographic bone survey and a radionuclide bone scan.

This prospective study analyzes the feasibility, oncologic safety and functional utility of Pearson's near-total laryngectomy with tracheopharyngeal shunt (NTL-TPSS). The procedure was found to give gratifying locoregional control in 30 consecutive advanced T3 and selected T4 tumors involving the larynx (n = 11) and hypopharynx (n = 19) and managed at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore, India. The oncologic "safety" of this technique was established in following examinations, ranging from 18 to 44 months (median, 22.2 months). A locoregional control rate of 74% was obtained. Lung

Early diagnosis of multiple-system atrophy (MSA) is important in patients presenting with late-onset cerebellar ataxia because it has a less favourable prognosis than other degenerative ataxic disorders. We report cerebellar presentation of MSA in a series of 16 patients, 3 of whom later developed parkinsonism. Two-thirds of them had early evidence of impaired postural reflexes with a history of recurrent falls. Some of these had a narrow-based, unsteady gait, unlike the more classic broad-based gait ataxia of cerebellar disease. On review of the patients' histories, genitourinary dysfunction
