Vector borne and zoonotic diseases (Larchmont, N.Y.)2022eng
Background: Pseudorabies virus (PRV) is a common pathogen found in pigs. The pathogenicity of PRV in humans is under researched and there are few confirmed cases of PRV infections in humans, which has led to a lack of clinical consensus. Methods: We presented a case of viral encephalitis caused by PRV in China. We performed a systematic review of the literature to investigate the clinical features and prognosis of PRV encephalitis and included 12 patients with PRV encephalitis. Results: All the patients had a history of direct or indirect contact with living pigs or pork before the onset of th

Anti-leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1) encephalitis is the second most common cause of autoimmune encephalitis and is characterized by cognitive impairment, psychiatric disorders, and faciobrachial dystonic seizures. In recent decades, literature reports have expanded the phenotypic spectrum associated with the LGI1 autoantibody. The present report describes the case of a 58-year-old man who presented with repetitive unilateral hyperhidrosis of the body and arm as an initial symptom and gradually developed psychiatric symptoms, involuntary movements of the face and arms, and progressive

BACKGROUND: Japanese encephalitis is an arthropod-borne zoonotic flavivirus infection endemic to tropical and subtropical Asia. A minority of infections leads to a symptomatic course, but affected patients often develop life-threatening encephalitis with severe sequelae.
LITERATURE REVIEW: Myelitis with flaccid paralysis is a rare complication of Japanese Encephalitis, which-according to our literature search-was reported in 27 cases, some of which were published as case reports and others as case series. Overall, there is a broad clinical spectrum with typically asymmetric manifestation and

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a mosquito borne viral zoonotic disease and JE virus (JEV) is responsible for causing several children deaths every year in India. Since 1978, cases of JE have been reported from Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh state annually. The knowledge on the role played by wildlife reservoirs in the sylvatic transmission and maintenance of JE virus remains limited. Bats are reservoir hosts for several emerging and re-emerging viral pathogens but their role in zoonotic cycle of JEV has not been elucidated yet. In Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh, 52 fruit bats were fou

A fatal case of Japanese encephalitis (JE) occurred in northern Australia in early 2021. Sequence studies showed that the virus belonged to genotype IV (GIV), a genotype previously believed to be restricted to the Indonesian archipelago. This was the first locally acquired case of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) GIV to occur outside Indonesia, and the second confirmed fatal human case caused by a GIV virus. A closely related GIV JEV strain subsequently caused a widespread outbreak in eastern Australia in 2022 that was first detected by fetal death and abnormalities in commercial piggeries. F

Purpose The current literature on pediatric autoimmune encephalitis (AE) focuses on medical identification/diagnosis and medical treatments. Data about the identification and treatment of communication disorders in these children are limited. This clinical focus article provides an example of the speech, language, and communication characteristics, intervention, and recovery of a single child with medical diagnoses of pediatric AE and pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS) and special education eligibility under the autism spectrum disorder category. Method This is an in-depth

Encephalitis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The clinical syndrome of encephalitis consists of altered mental status, seizures, neurologic signs, and is often accompanied by fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting. The encephalitis in children has been known that more common than in adult, with the incidence rate of infants was 3.9 times higher than that of people 20-44 years of age. The reported incidence of hospitalization attributed to paediatric encephalitis ranged from 3 to 13 admissions per 100,000 children per year with the overall mortality ranging from 0 to 7%. Th

Human alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a zoonotic infection caused by the fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis. We report the case of a patient who developed an accelerated course of AE with diffuse liver involvement after high-dose steroid treatment for autoimmune encephalitis. Immunosuppressive therapies present us with new challenges regarding the management of AE. With this article, we would like to draw attention to the importance of a screening program for AE before planned immunosuppressive therapy.

BACKGROUND: Parkinsonism following viral encephalitis is well reported. However, in addition, to parkinsonism other movement disorders such as dystonia, chorea, myoclonus may also be observed in these patients. Stereotypy is a very rare manifestation following viral encephalitis.
CASE REPORT: Here we report a rare case of a 25-year-old young man who developed stereotypy and parkinsonism following dengue virus encephalitis. The stereotypy was in the form of snapping of fingers of left-hand which was repetitive, purposeless, non-goal directed, present for most of the day and partially suppressi

BACKGROUND: For most viral encephalitides, therapy is merely supportive. Intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) have been used as a prophylactic and therapeutic approach. We conduct a systematic review on the safety and efficacy of IVIG in viral encephalitis.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review assessing PubMed, Cochrane Database, Biosis Previews and the ClinicalTrials.gov website to identify all reports on patients with viral encephalitis treated with IVIG as of May 31, 2019. The main outcomes assessed were therapeutic efficacy and safety. For an increased homogeneity of the population, at

Alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor (AMPAR) antibody-related diseases are very rare in autoimmune neurological diseases. We collected and analyzed the data of 3 patients with peculiar clinical manifestation positive for AMPA2-R antibody in the Department of Neurology, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University. In our reported case series, 2 patients were male and 1 was female. The initial clinical features of 3 patients were all consistent with an encephalopathy predominantly involving the limbic system. Interestingly, as the disease continues to advance, case 1

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Consensus criteria for autoimmune limbic encephalitis (ALE) allow for a diagnosis even without neuronal antibodies (Abs), but it remains unclear which clinical features should prompt neuronal Ab screening in temporal lobe epilepsy patients. The aim of the study was to investigate whether patients with temporal lobe seizures associated with additional symptoms or signs of limbic involvement may harbor neuronal Abs, and which clinical features should prompt neuronal Ab screening in these patients.
METHODS: We identified 47 patients from a tertiary epilepsy center with me

Considering the variety of mechanisms of Herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) contamination and its broad invasive potential of the nervous system, a life-long latent infection is established. Infected adult individuals may be susceptible to viral reactivation when under the influence of multiple stressors, especially regarding immunocompromised patients. This guides a series of neuroinflammatory events on the cerebral cortex, culminating, rarely, in encephalitis and cytotoxic / vasogenic brain edema. A sum of studies of such processes provides an explanation, even though not yet completely clarified,

BACKGROUND: Infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV) may involve different central nervous system (CNS) manifestations, including meningitis, encephalitis, and vasculitis. In cases in which otherwise healthy individuals are affected, an inborn error of immunity may underlie increased susceptibility or severity of infection.
METHODS: We collected a cohort of 17 adults who experienced VZV encephalitis and performed whole exome sequencing. Patient peripheral blood mononuclear cells were infected with VZV, and innate antiviral interferon (IFN) and cytokine responses as well as viral replicatio

There are limited reports of neurological symptoms in the pediatric population with COVID-19. We report a 13-year-old girl with three days of illness characterized by headache, non-explosive vomiting, fever, and sudden-onset sensory disorder associated with difficulty in standing and hemiparesis in limbs without evidence of meningeal signs. Brain tomography revealed diffuse brain edema, and the cerebrospinal fluid study was consistent with a viral infection. COVID-19 was diagnosed based on serology. The patient had an untoward clinical course despite treatment with hydroxychloroquine, azithrom

Relapsing polychondritis (RPC) is a rare autoimmune disease that is characterized by recurrent inflammation and destruction of cartilaginous tissues. Limbic encephalitis is a rare central nervous system manifestation of RPC that has been mentioned in case reports. Recognition of this association, and reliable methods of diagnosis, including the utility of neuroimaging modalities such as positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) can be useful in the evaluation of this diagnostic challenge. We report a patient with limbic encephalitis associated with RPC, where PET/CT was effecti

The measles epidemic was observed in Ukraine during 20172019. According to WHO, in Ukraine there was registered the highest number of measles cases in Europe during that period [8]. Measles is characterized by an acute course with fever, maculopapular rash, cough, conjunctivitis and can lead to central nervous system complications (encephalitis, encephalomyelitis) and bronchopulmonary system complications (laryngotracheobronchitis, bronchiolitis, pneumonia). In immunocompetent patients, viremia ends after the end of clinical signs, in contrast to immunosuppressed individuals, who could develop
