Dehydration in neonatal calves with diarrhea is a common cause of death. Severely dehydrated calves that are unable to suckle need intravenous fluids for effective resuscitation. This article gives an overview of the principles of intravenous fluid therapy for dehydrated calves including the types of fluids commonly used and methods of fluid administration. Practical on-farm options for simple clinical assessment and treatment of dehydration and acidosis in calves are also discussed in this article.

A case of 49 years old cattle farm employee who developed intermediate cuneiform osteitis after stabbing the dorsum of the foot with a tool. The bone became entirely necrotic and has been removed surgically. An instillation combined with local and systemic antibiotic therapy resulted in cure. After 3.5 years of follow-up neither static nor dynamic disabilities of the foot have been found.

Proximal enteritis was diagnosed on the basis of clinical signs of disease in 2 Standard-bred yearlings from the same farm. Large volumes of fluid were repeatedly obtained during gastric decompression. The horses did not respond to treatment with IV administered fluids, antimicrobial agents, cimetidine, and metoclopramide. Postmortem findings confirmed severe focal chronic active duodenitis with stricture formation. An etiologic agent was not identified.

An outbreak of listeriosis occurred in five-week-old lambs in a flock of 200 Dorset ewes and 240 lambs in-wintered. Nine lambs were lost within a period of 10 days. No cases of stillbirth or abortion or cerebral listeriosis occurred in the ewes. Silage had been fed on this farm to both cattle and sheep for 10 years without any previous problems. A description of the outbreak and the findings are reported.

Encapsulated larvae of Trichinella spiralis were found in wild-trapped, Microtus pennsylvanicus and Sigmodon hispidus. In addition, Peromyscus leucopus and Mus musculus again were found infected. These mammals were trapped from a farm site in Henrico County, Virginia, remote from known potential sources of trichinosis. The possible zoonotic relationship between wild rodent trichinosis and swine trichinosis is discussed.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Lameness is a major welfare and economic concern in fast-growing broiler chickens, particularly under tropical intensive production systems where environmental stressors are pronounced. Despite its multifactorial etiology, large-scale field evidence quantifying the combined effects of housing microclimate on lameness in Southeast Asian closed-house systems remains limited. This study aimed to identify age-specific environmental predictors of lameness in commercial Cobb 500 broilers raised under tropical closed-house conditions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational study

Since the 1980s, highly pathogenic and hepatotropic Lagovirus species have significantly impacted rabbit populations, including Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV, genotype GI.1), its variant RHDVa (genotype GI.1a), and RHDV type 2 (RHDV2, genotype GI.2). Non-pathogenic Lagovirus strains such as Rabbit Calicivirus (RCV, genotypes GI.3 and GI.4), which mainly replicate in the gastrointestinal tract, have also been identified. Recombination between pathogenic and non-pathogenic strains, particularly at the junction between non-structural (NS) and structural genome regions, is a major driver

Influenza D virus (IDV) is an emerging orthomyxovirus with cattle as its principal reservoir, and D/Yama2019-lineage viruses have become dominant in East Asia. Although IDV has been detected in Korean cattle, the genomic identity, phylogenetic placement, and regional evolutionary relationships of circulating Korean strains have not been defined. To address these gaps, nasal swabs were collected from 578 cattle with mild respiratory signs on 157 farms across eight provinces in South Korea during 2022-2023 and screened by RT-qPCR targeting the PB1 gene. Positive samples underwent complete genome

The emergence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli in food animals threatens both veterinary and human medicine by compromising critically important antimicrobials. This study characterized the prevalence, antimicrobial resistance profiles, molecular epidemiology, and virulence attributes of ESBL-producing E. coli isolated from broiler farms in Jinan City, China. From 600 faecal samples, 537 E. coli isolates were recovered (89.5 % isolation rate), with 71 (13.2 %) identified as ESBL producers. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed markedly more severe resi

In June 2023, an incident at a Norwegian feed mill caused pig feed being over-supplemented with sodium selenite (NaSe), resulting in feed selenium concentrations ranging from 2.47 to 4.70 mg Se/kg feed from sodium selenite (NaSe), levels exceeding the European Union (EU) regulatory upper limit of total 0.5 mg Se/kg feed (standardized at 88% DM). The feed containing excessive selenium was unknowingly sent out to production farms. Selenium is an essential trace mineral with a narrow dose range between deficiency and toxicity. The National Research Council (NRC) reports selenium requirements at c

Gastrointestinal parasitic infections constitute a major constraint to equine health and productivity, particularly in tropical regions where climatic and environmental conditions favor parasite survival and transmission. In Côte d'Ivoire, epidemiological data regarding gastrointestinal parasites in horses remain limited, especially in urban and peri-urban settings such as the district of Abidjan. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, diversity, and associated risk factors of gastrointestinal parasites affecting horses in the study area. A descriptive and analytical cross-sectional stu

Enterococcus cecorum is an important poultry pathogen associated with lameness and increased mortality, leading to major welfare and economic impacts. Treatment is often challenging because disease is frequently detected late and the organism can localise in bone and joints, limiting antimicrobial efficacy. Presence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes may further complicate treatment. Despite increasing global genomic research, only one recent study has investigated the phylogeny of E. cecorum from conventional UK broiler farms, using limited samples and a restricted time frame. In this st

BACKGROUND: In humans and pigs, altered composition of the microbiota associated with the epithelium of the palatine tonsils has been associated with bacterial or viral infection and lymphoid tissue inflammation. Tonsil lymphoid tissue is important for immunity and considered an important portal of entry for pathogens such as Streptococcus suis. Little is known about correlations between tonsil-associated microbiota, tonsillar infections, and the species that might confer colonization resistance against pathogens. Here, we describe a large collection of representative bacterial species from th

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Growth retardation syndrome in cultured Penaeus vannamei has been associated with Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) and a recently identified decapod hepanhamaparvovirus (DHPV) genotype V. However, data on its prevalence, pathogenicity, and interaction with the shrimp hepatopancreatic microbiome in Thailand remain limited. This study aimed to determine the incidence and co-infection rate of DHPV genotype V with EHP, evaluate its pathogenic potential, and explore microbiome alterations associated with infection.

Bed bugs have become resistant to traditional insecticides, and the demand for effective drugs to eradicate bed bugs on poultry farms (especially table-egg layer) and breeder farms (especially broiler breeders) is growing. Fluralaner has been shown to be effective in treating bed bug infestation in poultry. However, there is no product containing fluralaner labeled for use in chickens in the United States. In the present study, we prepared medicated drinking water using fluralaner dog chews (Bravecto®) and diethylene glycol monoethyl ether (Transcutol V). The present study aimed to determine t

Bovine infectious diseases pose a significant threat to cattle health, causing widespread economic losses and profoundly impacting the well-being and productivity of affected herds. Among these, Bovine Herpesvirus 4 (BoHV4), Bovine Ephemeral Fever Virus (BEFV), Bovine Rotavirus (BRV), and Clostridium perfringens (CP) are four common pathogens responsible for a range of clinical manifestations in cattle. Notably, co-infections among these pathogens are relatively prevalent, contributing to the complexity and severity of disease outcomes in affected cattle. To simultaneously detect and different

Background/Objectives: Pompe disease (PD) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by a deficiency of the lysosomal acid α-1,4-glucosidase (GAA) encoded by the GAA gene, leading to muscular dysfunctions due to pathological accumulation of glycogen in skeletal and cardiac muscles. PD has been reported in several animals and Japanese quails (JQ; Coturnix japonica), but a causative mutation has yet to be found in JQs with PD. Here, we aimed to identify a pathogenic mutation in JQs associated with PD. Methods: Paraffin-embedded skeletal muscle blocks from four JQs stored since the 1970s were

BACKGROUND: Cattle abortion, which may be caused by different infectious agents, harms milk and meat production, animal health, and ultimately rural economies. Despite the existence of a national control program for cattle brucellosis since 1995, abortion remains a major concern for cattle breeders in Algeria even among officially recognized cattle Brucellosis-free herds. The objective of this study is to investigate i: the abortion rate among officially recognized cattle Brucellosis-free herds, ii: the seroprevalence of some abortive infectious agents within cattle Brucellosis-free herds, iii
