Radiographic evidence for acceleration of skeletal growth in adult hamsters by exercise.

Voluntary exercise permanently elevates body weight in adult hamsters (Borer, K.T. Physiol. Behav. 12:589, 1974). Possible effects of such exercise on skeletal growth were examined in female hamsters in the asymptotic phase of growth, 14 of which had a 34-day access to horizontal disc exercisers, while 14 others remained sedentary. Skeletal measurements were taken from radiographs obtained at the start and at the end of exercise and on day 29 of retirement. Exercise was associated with more pronounced growth of axial than appendicular skeleton. Vertebral column, skull, humerous and femur of ex

Changes in blood flow to bones during the hypocalcemic and hypercalcemic phases of the response to parathyroid hormone.

Labeled microspheres were used to measure blood flow to the leg bones of the laying hen at 0, 3, and 30 min after iv injection of parathyroid hormone (PTH) (Wilson) or the synthetic 1 to 34 fragment of bovine parathyroid hormone (PTH 1-34). At 3 min, which corresponds to the hypocalcemic phase of the PTH response, blood flow to the combined femur, tibia, and metatarus was significantly reduced by PTH (Wilson) relative to 0 time and to carrier-injected controls. At 30 min, i.e., the time of maximum hypercalcemia in the hen, blood flow to these bones was significantly increased relative to 0 tim

New method of sex estimation through osteometric analysis of the lower limb for the Portuguese population.

To reconstruct the identity of an individual, sex assessment is an essential step in the estimation of the biological profile of a skeleton. For that purpose, forensic anthropologists apply both morphological and metric methods based in skeletal elements. In 2000, Wasterlain used a sample from the Identified Skeletal Collection of the University of Coimbra (19th -20th centuries) to develop a method to estimate sex on the basis of the limb bones metrics. In the present study, a sample of 202 individuals (92 males and 110 females) from the 21st Century Identified Skeletal Collection (University

Comparison of the effects of different osteotomy methods on bone healing; an experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Bone healing after osteotomy remains a major issue in orthopedics. This study aimed to evaluate the radiological, histopathological, and biomechanical aspects of bone healing using three different osteotomy techniques. METHODS: Fifty four Wistar Albino male rats were used. The animals were randomly divided into 3 groups as gigli (n:18), saw (n:18) and drill+osteotome (n:18). Transverse osteotomy was applied to the left femur with the gigli wire, microsaw and drill+osteotome. All femurs were evaluated radiologically, biomechanically and histopathologically at the end of the 15th, 30

GBT-1118 Rescued Impaired Bone Formation but Failed to Rescue Material Properties in Humanized Sickle-Cell-Disease Murine Model.

Sickle cell disease (SCD), the most common inherited blood disorder in the United States, affects approximately 100,000 individuals annually. A major complication of SCD is sickle cell bone disease, which results in substantial bone loss comparable to osteoporosis. Previous work showed that treatment with GBT1118, a sickle hemoglobin polymerization inhibitor, improved bone formation and reduced bone resorption in humanized SCD mice. However, its effects on bone material and mechanical properties were unknown. To address this, four-month-old control and SCD mice were fed vehicle or GBT1118 chow

Prenatal prednisone exposure impairs fetal long-bone development in mice by disrupting chondrocyte maturation and osteoblast formation.

Prednisone is commonly used to control autoimmune and inflammatory diseases during pregnancy, but its potential effects on fetal skeletal development remain incompletely characterized. This study investigated the dose- and exposure-period-related effects of prenatal prednisone exposure (PPE) on fetal long-bone development in mice and explored the cellular mechanism involving chondrocyte-to-osteoblast transdifferentiation. Pregnant mice received prednisone at 0.25 or 1.0 mg/kg/day throughout gestation or 1.0 mg/kg/day during defined gestational periods. Fetal femurs were collected on gestationa

Morphological, Morphometrical and Radiological Features of the Pelvic Limb Skeleton in African Green Monkeys (Chlorocebus sabaeus) from Saint Kitts and Nevis Islands.

The paper presents a detailed gross anatomical description of the elements of the pelvic limb in the African green monkey and provides comparative and differential elements on pelvic limb monkey osteology. The osteometric investigation adds value to the gross morphological and radiological investigation, adjoining metric data to the gross descriptive data set. The main methodology used was the gross morphological investigation, doubled by regular osteometrical and radiographical assessments. For each of the elements, several morphological aspects are described, pointing to the specific and dif

Administration of Bisphosphonate Preparations to Mice with Mild-type Hypophosphatasia Reduces the Quality of Spontaneous Locomotor Activity.

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a congenital bone disease caused by tissue-nonspecific mutations in the alkaline phosphatase gene. It is classified into six types: severe perinatal, benign prenatal, infantile, pediatric, adult, and odonto. HPP with femoral hypoplasia on fetal ultrasonography, seizures, or early loss of primary teeth can be easily diagnosed. In contrast, pediatric, adult, and odonto types of HPP over 4 years of age are less likely to be diagnosed because they do not have typical symptoms. Consequently, it may be misdiagnosed as common osteoporosis, and treatments incompatible with HP

Prevention of Osteoporosis in SAMP6 Mice by Rikkunshi-To: Japanese Kampo Medicine.

Osteoporosis can increase the risk of fracture in elderly patients, and insufficient control affects quality of life. Rikkunshi-To (RKT) has been prescribed for elderly patients to improve gastrointestinal function. We postulated that RKT has preventive potential for the development of osteoporosis. Thus, we developed a simple method to evaluate osteoporosis using a continuous series of X-ray images of femurs in mice, and investigated the effects of RKT on the development of osteoporosis in these mice. Male senescence-accelerated mouse strain P6 (SAMP6) mice, a model of senile osteoporosis in

Preoperative Virtual Planning Combined with 3D-Printed Surgical Guide Technology for Correction of Shepherd's Crook Deformity: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Shepherd's crook deformity, a rare and severe skeletal malformation, is characterized by a distinctive shepherd's crook-like curvature of the proximal femur. This pathological condition manifests as a marked reduction in the femoral neck-shaft angle (typically measuring less than 90 degrees). The deformity is most frequently observed in patients with fibrous dysplasia (FD), where it is a hallmark skeletal manifestation of the disease. CASE REPORT A 12-year-old boy presented with progressive deformity of both lower limbs. Physical examination revealed a typical "shepherd's crook" def

Femoral and tibial phenotypes of varus alignment in a Southeast Asian arthritic population: a descriptive study.

INTRODUCTION: Knowledge of femoral and tibial morphology is important for patient-specific surgery in both joint reconstruction and preservation procedures. Studies evaluating morphological variance in femoral and tibial alignments in Asian populations are scarce. This is the first descriptive study evaluating the femoral and tibial phenotypes of varus alignment in a Southeast Asian population. METHODS: Long-leg coronal standing radiographs of 2021 limbs were obtained, and the hip-knee-ankle angle, mechanical lateral distal femoral angle, medial proximal tibial angle and joint line convergenc

Embryonic development of the pelvic girdle and hindlimb skeletal elements in Anilius scytale (Linnaeus, 1758) (Serpentes: Aniliidae).

Anilius scytale is the sister lineage of all other alethinophidian snakes. Morphology of the hind limb complex in adult A. scytale (Aniliidae) has been documented. We herein, for the first time, describe the embryology of the skeletal elements of its hind limb and pelvic girdle and contextualize the evolution of these structures. We identified pregnant females of A. scytale in the Herpetology Collection of the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi and separated 40 embryos. The embryos were sequentially staged using external and internal anatomy, collectively comprising a developmental series representi

Biomechanical effects of internal fixation with self-lock compression anti-rotation blade for Pauwels type III femoral neck fractures: a comparative finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: Self-lock compression anti-rotation blade (SCAB) is a novel internal fixation implant for femoral neck fractures (FNF). We conducted this finite element analysis study to evaluate the biomechanical performances of SCAB combined with a cannulated screw for fixation of Pauwels type III FNF. METHODS: Three finite element models of Pauwels type III FNF treated with various internal fixations were established: a: the inverted triangular parallel cannulated screw (3CS) model, b: the biplane double-supported screw fixation (BDSF) model, c: the SCAB combined with a cannulated screw model.

A computational analysis of a novel therapeutic approach combining an advanced medicinal therapeutic device and a fracture fixation assembly for the treatment of osteoporotic fractures: Effects of physiological loading, interface conditions, and fracture fixation materials.

The occurrence of periprosthetic femoral fractures (PFF) has increased in people with osteoporosis due to decreased bone density, poor bone quality, and stress shielding from prosthetic implants. PFF treatment in the elderly is a genuine concern for orthopaedic surgeons as no effective solution currently exists. Therefore, the goal of this study was to determine whether the design of a novel advanced medicinal therapeutic device (AMTD) manufactured from a polymeric blend in combination with a fracture fixation plate in the femur is capable of withstanding physiological loads without failure du

Mechanoreceptor analysis on femoral and tibial site remnant of anterior cruciate ligament injury using immunohistochemistry.

INTRODUCTIONS: More than 50% of knee ligament injuries are anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. The injury can lead to instability and osteochondral damage which in turn leads to early osteoarthritis. ACL remnant contains sensory nerve cells and mechanoreceptors which are useful for reinnervation of the graft and maintaining the knee stability. However, ACL remnant preservation can interfere the visualization during surgery. The number of mechanoreceptors in the ACL remnant of the tibia and femur have to be determined to help the surgeon get better visualization and at the same time pres

The Regularity of Stress Shielding in Internal Fixation Characterized by Hydromechanics.

Stress shielding is an important factor in the internal fixation of a fracture. To explore the regularity of stress shielding in internal fixation, a simplified model of a comminuted femoral shaft fracture bridged by a locking plate was established and finite element analysis was performed to analyze the load distribution between the plate and femur from the proximal end of the femur to the fracture line and investigate the stress shielding degree of the plate on the bone. The stress, deformation, and axial compressive force distribution of four internal fixation schemes under compression were
