Relations between upper limb soft tissue disorders and repetitive movements at work.

To make a preliminary assessment of whether upper limb soft tissue disorders might be associated with activities at work, we have conducted a case-control study of subjects attending orthopedic clinics in three cities. All subjects between the ages of 16 and 65 years, in whom defined soft tissue conditions of the upper limb were diagnosed by the participating orthopedic surgeons, were invited to take part. Controls were subjects attending the same clinics within the same age range whose clinical diagnosis did not include disease of the upper limb, cervical or thoracic spine. Information concer

[Involuntary movements caused by thalamic lesion].

We described two types of involuntary movement accompanied with a well-located thalmaic lesion shown by MR imaging in five patients. All patients had the involuntary movements of an upper limb contralateral to the thalamic lesion. Two patients (1 and 2) had choreoathetosis that became most prominent when their index finger approached their nose, where irregular and dysynchronous oscillation occasionally superimposed. This choreoathetosis was differentiated from pseudoathetosis caused by disturbance of proprioceptive sensations. The MRI lesion was located at the middle level of thalamus includi

Determination of muscle fatigue of operating theatre staff using myotonometric measurements.

BACKGROUND: In Latvia, more than 31,000 surgical operations were performed in hospitals in 2023, and work-related musculoskeletal disorders represent one of the most common occupational health problems among healthcare workers. The increasing number of surgeries and the shortage of healthcare personnel in Latvia have led to a higher physical workload among operating theatre staff. This increased workload contributes to muscle fatigue and elevates the risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders. The aim of this study was to assess changes in muscle frequency and stiffness in order to determi

Sex differences in coordination of center of mass kinematics during table tennis footwork.

Table tennis requires dynamic stability during the execution of fast movements, and the Center of Mass (COM) is a key parameter describing balance control. This study aimed to analyze the COM differences between males and females during chasse-step footwork using vector coding to understand the sex-specific coordination patterns. Eighteen male and eighteen female national-level athletes participated in the motion capture analysis, with data collection using an 8-camera Vicon motion capture system with 52 markers attached and a force platform. The segmental COM velocity (sCOM) and body COM (bCO

Analysis of Upper-Limb Movement Characteristics in Tennis Volleys Based on Skill-Level Differences: Kinematic Features of the Backhand Versus Forehand Volley.

Background: In tennis, the volley is an important shot; however, studies describing its movement characteristics have been limited to the forehand volley (FV). In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of upper-limb movement during FV and backhand volley (BV) in skilled and less-skilled tennis players. Methods: Twelve tennis players with experience (skilled group) and eight with little experience (less-skilled group) were included. The participants stood in front of a simulated net and volleyed balls were fed toward the target. Movements were recorded using three video cameras, and three-

Klumpke's Palsy Following Minor Trauma: A Rare Presentation in a Young Adult.

The brachial plexus is a complex network that transmits motor and sensory signals between the spinal cord and the upper limbs. Klumpke's palsy, a rare injury affecting the lower brachial plexus (C8-T1 roots), commonly occurs in newborns or adults after severe trauma and is characterized by a claw-hand deformity, sensory loss along the medial forearm and hand and weakness in the small muscles of the hand. Adult-onset Klumpke's palsy following minor trauma is exceptionally rare. We report a unique case of isolated right-sided Klumpke's palsy in a 31-year-old male after a trivial fall from bed. N

Radius Bone Mineral Density Measurement Is Essential During Initial PHPT Workup: Results of a Retrospective Study on 400 Patients.

BACKGROUND: Bone mineral density (BMD) measurement at the lumbar spine, femoral neck, total hip, and distal 1/3 radius is recommended for patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Osteoporosis at any site justifies surgery. The distal 1/3 radius is often neglected. This study evaluated the prevalence of distal 1/3 radius measurement, the proportion of osteoporosis at this site alone, and BMD changes 1 year post-parathyroidectomy in patients with PHPT. METHODS: A total of 548 patients who underwent parathyroidectomy for PHPT between 2016 and 2024 in University Hospital Center of Nantes

Comparison of Gentleness and Reapplication Between Two Pulse Oximetry Probes in Healthy Adults in a Laboratory Setting.

PURPOSE: Many commonly used monitoring devices use adhesives to attach to the skin. These devices can cause avoidable skin damage, known as medical adhesive-related skin injury (MARSI). Pulse oximetry is a ubiquitous medical device used throughout care settings and, depending on the type of care, may have wear times over many hours or days. The purpose of these studies was to compare gentleness and reapplication of two pulse oximetry probes (Nellcor™ OxySoft™ neonatal-adult SpO2 sensor, Medtronic (silicone-based probe); LNCS® Neo, Masimo® (acrylic-based probe)). Differentiating right upper limb movements of esports players who play different game genres.

Esports is a fast-growing worldwide phenomenon encompassing hundreds of millions of competitive players. It is well-established that different game genres require distinct cognitive skills, but the biomechanical implications of playing different game genres have received little attention. This is the first study to quantify gamers' kinematic behaviour across genres, demonstrating the importance of physical demands on performance and equipment in esports. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the right upper limb kinematic behaviour differs among players across game genres. 63 es

Peripheral and Central Hemodynamic Responses to Rhythmic Handgrip Exercise in Young, Healthy Black Women.

PURPOSE: Non-Hispanic Black (NHB) women in the United States exhibit higher prevalence and mortality rates from cardiovascular diseases compared with non-Hispanic White (NHW) women. Previous studies in NHB men have demonstrated impaired vascular function at rest and during exercise; however, to date, no studies have investigated the hyperemic responses during exercise in NHB women. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that, compared with NHW women, NHB women would present an attenuated increase in forearm blood flow (FBF) and forearm vascular conductance (FVC) during steady-state rhythmic handg

Nonoperative Management of Ulnar Collateral Ligament Injuries in the Throwing Athlete: A Framework for Return to Throwing.

BACKGROUND: Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries in throwing athletes result from repetitive valgus stress to the elbow in a flexed position. Muscular dysfunction of the forearm and shoulder musculature is commonly associated with UCL injuries. Nonoperative rehabilitation should generally start with a rest period, followed by progressive strengthening of the upper extremity, and eventually, a systematic throwing program. INDICATIONS: Nonoperative management is first line for UCL injuries. Trained rehabilitation professionals, including physical therapists or athletic trainers, should be i

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on osteoporotic fractures: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Recent reports suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns may have influenced the epidemiology of osteoporotic fractures, but results vary across regions and fracture types. The aim of this study was to provide evidence-based insights into the impact of the pandemic on osteoporotic fracture incidence. METHODS: We searched four databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science) up to August 2025 for observational or retrospective studies comparing osteoporotic fracture incidence during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020) with the pre-pandemic period (2019).

Sensitivity and Specificity of the Brachial Plexus Outcome Measure Activity Scale: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Upper limb impairments occur after incomplete recovery from brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI). Reconstructive surgeries are offered to address specific joint-level impairments; however, complete restoration is not possible. Thus, surgical decisions must carefully consider the goal of improving activity function within the child's life context. The Brachial Plexus Outcome Measure (BPOM) Activity scale is an outcome measure of upper limb activity limitation in children with BPBI. It measures the upper limb function on a 5-point ordinal scale, where a score of ≤3 is theoretically an in
