Intimidation against advocates and researchers in the tobacco, alcohol and ultra-processed food spaces: a review.

Unhealthy commodity industries (UCIs) engage in corporate political activity, using diverse practices, including intimidatory tactics, to thwart, delay and dilute regulations that threaten their businesses. While examples of such intimidation exist across multiple sectors, no attempt has been made to synthesize these. Furthermore, much of the literature focuses on intimidation of policy-makers. Less is known about the types of intimidation experienced by advocates and researchers and their responses to this intimidation. This scoping review explores the literature across the tobacco, alcohol a

Voices that matter: A community-driven intervention framework for Black women who have experienced traumatic loss.

Although Black women face disproportionately high rates of gun violence and incarceration loss, there is a scarcity of culturally relevant interventions for this population. The aims of this study were to (a) examine the need for a culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and evidence-based grief intervention and to (b) identify key program components and considerations. Using a community-based participatory research framework, co-collaborators interviewed and surveyed 13 Black women who experienced gun violence and/or incarceration loss. Thematic analysis of interview data confirmed a need for

Turbulent flow field in maglev centrifugal blood pumps of CH-VAD and HeartMate III: secondary flow and its effects on pump performance.

Secondary flow path is one of the crucial aspects during the design of centrifugal blood pumps. Small clearance size increases stress level and blood damage, while large clearance size can improve blood washout and reduce stress level. Nonetheless, large clearance also leads to strong secondary flows, causing further blood damage. Maglev blood pumps rely on magnetic force to achieve rotor suspension and allow more design freedom of clearance size. This study aims to characterize turbulent flow field and secondary flow as well as its effects on the primary flow and pump performance, in two repr

Parental Resilience in Contexts of Political Violence: A Systematic Scoping Review of 45 Years of Research.

Families suffer in particular ways during the violence and targeted deprivation of freedom and resources within political violence (PV), which includes wars, armed conflicts, and military occupations. While evidence is accumulating about the disproportionate impacts of PV on parents and children, we lack a clear, globally integrated understanding of how families suffer-and survive-PV. There is an urgent need to synthesize existing work to refine our understanding of parental experiences within PV-with particular attention to both how PV creates suffering for parents, and how parents strategize

A Robotic Clamped-Kinematic System to Study Knee Ligament Injury.

Knee ligament injury is among the most common sports injuries and is associated with long recovery periods and low return-to-sport rates. Unfortunately, the mechanics of ligament injury are difficult to study in vivo, and computational studies provide limited insight. The objective of this study was to implement and validate a robotic system capable of reproducing natural six degree-of-freedom clamped-kinematic trajectories on human cadaver knees (meaning that positions and orientations are rigidly controlled and resultant loads are measured). To accomplish this, we leveraged the field's recen

Evolving Role of Three-Dimensional Echocardiography for Right Ventricular Volume Analysis in Pediatric Heart Disease: Literature Review and Clinical Applications.

Accurate knowledge of right ventricular (RV) volumes and ejection fraction is fundamental to providing optimal care for pediatric patients with congenital and acquired heart disease, as well as pulmonary hypertension. Traditionally, these volumes have been measured using cardiac magnetic resonance because of its accuracy, reproducibility, and freedom from geometric assumptions. More recently, an increasing number of studies have described the measurement of RV volumes using three-dimensional (3D) echocardiography. In addition, volumes by 3D echocardiography have also been used for outcome rese

Surgical outcome and contributing presurgical evaluations in children with magnetic resonance imaging-negative epilepsy and periodic seizure cycles.

BACKGROUND: The identification of surgical candidates is a critical issue in patients with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-negative drug-resistant focal epilepsy and latent accompanying resectable lesions, such as focal cortical dysplasia (FCD). Recently, periodic seizure cycles have been associated with FCD in both patients with MRI-positive and MRI-negative epilepsy. We investigated the presurgical evaluation and postsurgical outcome of patients with MRI-negative epilepsy with FCD and a history of periodic seizure cycles. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the characteristics of presurgi

Side group dependent room temperature crystallization-induced phosphorescence of benzil based all organic phosphors.

In this work, we report alkoxy substituted benzil based all organic room temperature phosphors which showed crystallization induced phosphorescence (CIP). Nine title compounds were prepared with various alkyl lengths (OCnH2n+1: n = 8-16) and the effect of alkyl side group length on the phosphorescence performance was investigated, as compared to p-anisil. It was found that both phosphorescence quantum yield and lifetime increased concomitantly as the alkyl length increased up to nonyloxy (BZL-OC9). Further increase in the carbon number caused the phosphorescence performance to deteriorate due

Bilateral Back Extensor Exosuit for multidimensional assistance and prevention of spinal injuries.

Lumbar spine injuries resulting from heavy or repetitive lifting remain a prevalent concern in workplaces. Back-support devices have been developed to mitigate these injuries by aiding workers during lifting tasks. However, existing devices often fall short in providing multidimensional force assistance for asymmetric lifting, an essential feature for practical workplace use. In addition, validation of device safety across the entire human spine has been lacking. This paper introduces the Bilateral Back Extensor Exosuit (BBEX), a robotic back-support device designed to address both functionali

Functional Electrical Stimulation and Brain-Machine Interfaces for Simultaneous Control of Wrist and Finger Flexion.

Brain-machine interface (BMI) controlled functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a promising treatment to restore hand movements to people with cervical spinal cord injury. Recent intracortical BMIs have shown unprecedented successes in decoding user intentions, however the hand movements restored by FES have largely been limited to predetermined grasps. Restoring dexterous hand movements will require continuous control of many biomechanically linked degrees-of-freedom in the hand, such as wrist and finger flexion, that would form the basis of those movements. Here we investigate the abilit

Stiffness Change for Reconfiguration of Inflated Beam Robots.

Abstract Active control of the shape of soft robots is challenging. Despite having an infinite number of passive degrees of freedom (DOFs), soft robots typically only have a few actively controllable DOFs, limited by the number of degrees of actuation (DOAs). The complexity of actuators restricts the number of DOAs that can be incorporated into soft robots. Active shape control is further complicated by the buckling of soft robots under compressive forces; this is particularly challenging for compliant continuum robots due to their long aspect ratios. In this study, we show how variable stiffn

The passive biomechanics of the thumb carpometacarpal joint: An in vitro study.

The thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint facilitates multidirectional motion of the thumb and affords prehensile power and precision. Traditional methods of quantifying thumb CMC kinematics have been largely limited to range-of-motion (ROM) measurements in 4 orthogonal primary directions (flexion, extension, abduction, adduction) due to difficulties in capturing multidirectional thumb motion. However, important functional motions (e.g., opposition) consist of combinations of these primary directions, as well as coupled rotations (internal and external rotation) and translations. Our goal was to p
