The purpose of these protocols is to evaluate the organization and barrier function of pleated Septate Junctions (pSJs) in the ectodermally-derived epithelial tissues of Drosophila embryos. pSJ form an occluding barrier on the lateral membrane of ectodermal tissues including the epidermis, salivary glands, trachea, and hindgut that is functionally similar to the tight junction in vertebrate tissues. In Drosophila, 30 proteins have been identified that are required for the formation of pSJs. Core pSJ proteins are initially localized along the length of the lateral membrane but become strongly e

Diagnosis of the fatal neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is challenging. Neurofilaments, indicative of neuronal damage, along with creatine kinase, creatinine, myoglobin, and troponin T, representing muscular damage, have been identified as promising fluid biomarkers. This study aims to comprehensively assess and compare their diagnostic and prognostic potential in a 'real-world' cohort of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. About 77 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and its clinical variants, and 26 age- and sex-matched controls with various neuromuscu

In this case report, we present an unusual approach that was used to treat a 14-year-old patient with a bilateral canine-premolar transposition and a missing maxillary lateral incisor. The orthodontic treatment involved maintaining the transposition and creating a space for lateral incisor replacement. Toward the end of the treatment, accentuated buccal root torque was performed, and lateral group function was established to improve the treatment outcome. Finally, an ideal esthetic and functional occlusion was achieved. The 8-year posttreatment follow-up records show the stability of this trea

We describe evidence for dissociable roles of the medial and lateral orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) in major depressive disorder (MDD) from structure, functional activation, functional connectivity, metabolism, and neurochemical systems. The reward-related medial orbitofrontal cortex has lower connectivity and less reward sensitivity in MDD associated with anhedonia symptoms; and the non-reward related lateral OFC has higher functional connectivity and more sensitivity to non-reward/aversive stimuli in MDD associated with negative bias symptoms. Importantly, we propose that conventional antidepres

BACKGROUND: The hypoplastic, weak lateral crus of the nose may cause concave alar rim deformity, and in severe cases, even alar rim collapse. These deformities may lead to both aesthetic disfigurement and functional impairment of the nose.
METHODS: The cephalic part of the lateral crus was folded and fixed to reinforce the lateral crus. The study included 17 women and 15 men with a median age of 24 years. The average follow-up period was 12 months. For 23 patients, the described technique was used to treat concave alar rim deformity, whereas for 5 patients, who had thick and sebaceous skin, i

To treat morphological abnormalities, impaction, and severe malposition of the teeth, the lateral incisors are sometimes extracted, followed by orthodontic space closure. This procedure often requires special consideration, not only with regard to esthetics but also for functional issues. However, thusfar, few reports that have performed a functional evaluation in such cases. The purpose of this article is to report the successful treatment of a 23 year-old male patient with the complaint of irregular placement and abnormal shape of his teeth. The patient had an impacted maxillary unilateral l

OBJECTIVE: Lateral temporal lobe epilepsies (LTLE) are poorly characterized heterogeneous epilepsies. As the lateral temporal lobe supports distinct functions, we hypothesized that neuropsychological profiles could differ according to the localization of the seizure focus within the lateral temporal lobe.
METHODS: We retrospectively examined the neuropsychological characteristics of 74 consecutive patients with refractory LTLE assessed in the context of a presurgical investigation at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris between 1998 and 2018. Precise localization of the epileptic focus was

Handedness is the preference for one upper limb side generalized across different sensorimotor skills and strong population-level right-handedness is especially pronounced in humans. The lateralization of functional representations in the primary motor cortex for unilateral upper limb movements depends on task complexity (e.g., simple tapping movements versus sequential finger movements) and brain morphology (e.g., quantification of the pyramidal tract and transcallosal connectivity). Previous studies investigating lateralization differences between right- and left-handed individuals did not c

The lateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) plays a variety of crucial roles in higher-order cognitive functions. Previous works have attempted to modulate lateral PFC function by applying non-invasive transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and demonstrated positive effects on performance of tasks involving cognitive processes. The neurophysiological underpinning of the stimulation effects, however, remain poorly understood. Here, we explored the neurophysiological after-effects of tDCS over the lateral PFC by assessing changes in the magnitude of interhemispheric inhibition from the lateral P

BACKGROUND: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is an established therapeutic option in the treatment of cuff tear arthropathy (CTA). Recent studies have described a positive effect of lateralization of the center of rotation, especially on postoperative rotational function. The goal of this study is to compare the outcome of non-lateralized versus lateralized RSA with particular regard to rotational function in patients with CTA.
METHODS: Thirty-four patients underwent implantation of RSA either with lateralization (n = 17) or without lateralization (n = 17) by use of a 1-cm autologous bone

The controversy regarding the radiographic parameter which best represents the various deformities of clubfoot continues. The aim of our study was to clear up this controversy. Fifty surgically treated (soft-tissue release) congenital clubfeet were studied clinically using Laaveg and Ponseti score and radiologically using twelve different radiographic parameters in weight-bearing AP and lateral views. The talo-calcaneal angle (TCA) in AP and lateral view showed statistically significant correlation with the functional rating, but significant variation in the dimension of the angles among the d

BACKGROUND: The acromioclavicular (AC) joint connects the acromion with the lateral end of the clavicle and constitutes an important load-transmitting element between the upper extremity and the skeleton of the trunk.
AIM: This review discusses functional aspects that relate the AC and the coracoclavicular (CC) ligaments to AC joint instability and lateral clavicle fracture.
RESULTS: In terms of stability the AC and CC ligaments play a pivotal role for this region. Under normal conditions the restraint system is balanced and becomes unbalanced in cases of injury such as AC joint instability

Complete postorbital bars, bony arches that encompass the lateral aspect of the eye and form part of a circular orbit, have evolved homoplastically multiple times during mammalian evolution. Numerous functional hypotheses have been advanced for postorbital bars, the most promising being that postorbital bars function to stiffen the lateral orbit in taxa that have significant angular deviation between the temporal fossa and the bony orbit. Without a stiff lateral orbit the anterior temporalis muscle and fascia potentially would pull on the postorbital ligament, deform the orbit, and cause disru

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to investigate if contractile asymmetry between septum and left ventricular (LV) lateral wall drives heart failure development in patients with left bundle branch block (LBBB) and whether the presence of lateral wall dysfunction affects potential for recovery of LV function with cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT).
BACKGROUND: LBBB may induce or aggravate heart failure. Understanding the underlying mechanisms is important to optimize timing of CRT.
METHODS: In 76 nonischemic patients with LBBB and 11 controls, we measured strain using speckle-tracking echoca

BACKGROUND: Modern distal biceps reconstruction techniques generally have satisfactory outcomes, but are not without complications. Posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) palsy is a rare but potentially devastating complication of bicortical metal button fixation. Recently, a unicortical, intramedullary, repair technique utilizing a suture anchor has been described. The primary aim of this study was to compare short-term functional and patient-reported outcomes and complication rates in patients receiving unicortical intramedullary repair (UR) with suture anchor against those receiving bicortical

OBJECTIVE: It is poorly understood why patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) have cognitive deficits and brain network changes that extend beyond the temporal lobe, including altered extratemporal intrinsic connectivity networks (ICNs). However, subcortical arousal structures project broadly to the neocortex, are affected by TLE, and thus may contribute to these widespread network effects. The authors' objective was to examine functional connectivity (FC) patterns between subcortical arousal structures and neocortical ICNs, possible neurocognitive relationships, and FC changes afte

Cephalic malposition is an anatomical variant that is found particularly in Middle Eastern people. Malpositioning of the alar cartilage may cause both functional and aesthetic problems. This study aimed to investigate and compare the functional and aesthetic outcomes of the two techniques used to correct cephalic malposition of the lower lateral cartilage: lateral crural overlay (LCO) and lateral crural transposition. This current randomised double-blinded clinical trial was performed on 40 patients who were referred for rhinoplasty in 2017-2018. They were randomly divided into two groups, the
