Leiomyosarcoma of the left atrium: case report and review of the literature.

Leiomyosarcomas are extremely rare primary cardiac tumours. A 46-year-old woman presenting with symptoms and signs of rapidly progressive left ventricular failure and apparent systemic lupus erythematosus was subsequently found to have a grade III/III left atrial leiomyosarcoma which was confirmed surgically. Pathology showed a cellular neoplasm arranged in fascicles with multinucleated giant cells, with areas of high grade sarcomatous change. The patient died seven months postoperatively with intractable heart failure. At autopsy, tumour infiltrated the pericardium, both atria and the right v

Cellular changes in the peripartum bovine fetal placenta related to placental separation.

Binucleate giant cells (BNC) decline in number and viability peripartum if the placenta is subsequently released normally. This suggests an involvement of BNC destruction in fetal membrane separation in the cow. Dexamethasone induction of parturition may result in fetal membrane retention through a stabilization of the BNC (possibly the BNC plasma membranes). Prostaglandin F2a treatment in vitro induced a loss of BNC when these were obtained from cows which subsequently retained the fetal membranes for a longer than normal interval. Overall, our results indicate an involvement of BNC loss and

Congenital cerebral primitive neuroectodermal tumor with astrocytic differentiation and extracranial metastases.

A cerebral primitive neuroectodermal tumor with astrocytic differentiation and extracranial metastases in a 28-day-old infant is reported. The infant presented with a progressively enlarged head, cutaneous lesions in the neck, and enlarged cervical lymph nodes. A computed tomography brain scan demonstrated a giant thalamic tumor with subarachnoid dissemination and hydrocephalus. Biopsy material from the cervical lesions showed a picture of glioma with anaplastic astrocytes. The patient received a ventriculoperitoneal shunt operation and palliative chemotherapy, but died at 3 months of age. Aut

[Report of a case of allergic granulomatous vasculitis (Churg-Strauss syndrome)].

A 35 year female with a previous history of asthma came to our observation about 10 months ago. She was dyspneic, showed small nodules (2 to 5 mm) in arms, hands and legs and had radiological evidence of pulmonary granulomatosis and pleural effusion. Diagnosis was made by means of cutaneous biopsy showing a necrotic granulomatous vasculitic lesions with eosinophilic infiltration and giant cells, consistent with allergic granulomatosis of Churg-Strauss syndrome. Steroid therapy alone (prednisone 1 mg/kg/die) led to a rapid and complete clinical and humoral remission. The patient is still doing

Viability of alpha-momorcharin-treated mouse blastocysts in the pseudopregnant uterus.

Mouse morulae and early blastocysts developed normally to the late blastocyst stage in the presence of alpha-momorcharin in culture. When these embryos were transferred to a pseudopregnant uterus, they showed a poor ability to induce the decidual reaction and many failed to implant. Those that had implanted showed retarded embryonic development and many implantation sites contained only trophoblastic giant cells and extraembryonic membranes. Implantation of blastocysts was inhibited when the recipient animal was given alpha-momorcharin at the time of embryo transfer. We suggest that terminatio

Focal prostatic granulomas rheumatoid like--probably iatrogenic in origin.

Small focal rheumatoid nodule-like granulomas have been noted in the prostatic chips from 11 repeat transurethral resections (TUR) in 10 patients. The lesions are situated in the prostatic stroma and are characterized by a central zone of fibrinoid necrosis, a peripheral palisade of fibroblasts and histiocytes and variable numbers of lymphocytes and giant cells. These granulomas are only noted in prostatic tissue from repeat TURs, are not evident in the original TUR tissue and probably have an iatrogenic basis. As yet, they appear to be of no clinical significance, but the entity is not well r

[Morphologic characteristics of successive transformations of mouse blastocysts into teratoids during development under the testicular capsule].

Blastocysts of the CBAXC57Bl mouse strain transplanted under the testicular albuminous membrane normally develop (but delay in time) during 7-9 days forming embryos at the stage of the deep neural groove. The data obtained demonstrate that there is a definite autonomy in the development of early embryos not depending on any influence from the uterus at this stage. Desorganization of the embryo occurs 9-11 days after transplantation of the blastocyst. Further (14-20 days after transplantation) as a result of active histogenesis and atypical organogenesis, immature teratoid is forming. Secondary

[A case of small cell carcinoma of kidney; solitary splenic metastasis].

A 67-year-old male visited a hospital with a complaint of right flank pain. A computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a right renal tumor, lymphadenopathy, and a splenic tumor. Right radical nephrectomy, lymph node dissection, and splenectomy were performed. Histological examination of the renal tumor and lymph node revealed small cell anaplastic carcinoma. A dilated renal pelvis was focally covered with transitional cell carcinoma grade 2. Splenic tumor revealed a mixture of small cell and giant cell anaplastic carcinoma. Immunostaining for NSE and cytokeratin were pos

Shape instability of a biomembrane driven by a local softening of the underlying actin cortex.

We present a theory showing that local shape instabilities of composite biological membranes, consisting of a lipid bilayer and an underlying actin cortex, can be triggered by a local softening of the membrane-associated cytoskeleton. A membrane containing such cortical defects can form blisters or invaginations, depending on external conditions. The theoretical predictions agree with observations provided by two sets of experiments: (i) microscopic observations of shape changes of giant vesicles with underlying shells of a thin actin network show the formation of local blisters and (ii) micro

[Two cases of anaplastic carcinoma of the pancreas in terms of the diversity of carcinoma cells (epithelial-mesenchymal transition; EMT)].

The first evaluated case was a 71-year-old man with melaena. A huge tumor mass was observed in the tale of the pancreas, which we diagnosed as pancreatic carcinoma. Pathological findings confirmed that it was anaplastic pancreas carcinoma (giant cell type). The second case was a 61-year-old woman with upper abdominal pain. Irregular tumors with scattered cysts were observed in the tale of the pancreas, which rapidly increased. Autopsy findings confirmed that it was anaplastic pancreas carcinoma (pleomorphic type). Both cases showed positive for epithelial marker and mesenchymal markers and dec

[An autopsy case of lung cancer in a young adult dwarf].

A 31-year-old man with peripheral squamous cell carcinoma is reported. By nature he was very small. On admission he was 140 cm tall, weighed 28 kg, and was complaining of chest pain of five years duration. A giant tumor in the right lung was found to be moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. He also had congenital anomalies, such as crossed ectopic kidney with fusion, café-au-lait spots, inguinal hernia, simian line, etc. He had never been exposed to cancer-causing agents. In conclusion, genetic factors related to intrauterine growth retardation might have been linked to his oncode

Primary choriocarcinoma of the lung: case report of two male subjects.

Extragenital choriocarcinoma in the male is known to occur in retroperitoneum, mediastinum and pineal body in a high proportion, and there have been no certain reports of lung origin. We studied two cases of choriocarcinoma arising from the lung in the male by histological, electronmicroscopical, immunofluorescent, and immunoenzyme methods. Histologically, characteristic changes of choriocarcinoma, composed of irregular complex of cytotrophoblasts and syncytiotrophoblasts with massive necrosis and hemorrhage were demonstrated. These two cell patterns, characteristic of choriocarcinoma, were al

Congenital Juvenile Xanthogranuloma in the Perioral Region: A Case Image.

Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) is the most common form of non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis in childhood. It often presents with cutaneous involvement and exhibits a predilection for the head and neck region. This article illustrates a case of congenital JXG in a 5-month-old boy, characterized by a solitary, well-circumscribed nodule above the left upper lip. Histopathologically, the lesion exhibited histiocytes with eosinophilic cytoplasm and Touton giant cells. Immunohistochemistry revealed histiocytes positive for CD68 and Factor XIIIa, while negative for S-100 protein. Clinicians should be

Pleomorphic Lipoma of the Parotid Gland: A Potential Cytological Pitfall.

Pleomorphic lipoma is an uncommon benign adipocytic tumor that arises from the subcutis. It has no risk of recurrence, metastasis or malignant transformation. The cytological findings of pleomorphic lipoma are often overdiagnosed as suspicious of malignancy owing to the pleomorphic morphology of the floret giant cells. We present a rare case of pleomorphic lipoma of the parotid gland which was misdiagnosed as a malignant tumor on fine needle aspiration cytology. Histopathological examination and positive expression for CD34 helped to arrive at the final diagnosis. Awareness about this rare ent

Sagittal split ramus osteotomy for aneurysmal bone cyst of the mandibular condyle.

Aneurysmal bone cyst is a benign pseudocystic osseous lesion characterized by a fibrous connective tissue stroma with cellular fibrous tissue, multinucleated giant cells, and large blood-filled spaces with no endothelial lining. The entity is uncommon in facial bones, and it rarely involves the mandibular condyle. Resection of the lesion is the most accepted treatment. The present case is the 11th reported case of aneurysmal bone cyst of the mandibular condyle in the existing literature and the first where, rather than using conventional extra oral approach, sagittal split ramus osteotomy was

Xanthogranulomatous Cholecystitis Mimicking Biliary Tract Cancer.

We present a 42-year-old man with a 1-month history of painless jaundice, dark urine, clay-colored stools, and a 13.5-kg weight loss. Laboratory tests revealed elevated liver enzymes and CA19-9. Imaging showed dilation of both the intra- and extrahepatic bile ducts, narrowing of the bile duct at the junction of the common bile duct and common hepatic duct, and a hypoechoic mass involving the neck of the gallbladder and the muscularis propria of the duodenum. Examination of the resected gallbladder and perihilar nodes ruled out malignancy and revealed a diffuse inflammatory infiltrate of giant

Orbital giant conjunctival epithelial primary cyst.

CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old male, with no previous traumatic o surgical ocular injury, presented with a right eye proptosis and inferior displacement which began 4 months earlier. Ultrasound and CT showed a cystic lesion of 3.5 × 2 cm in the superior orbit. Surgical resection was performed by transconjunctival orbitotomy. The histopathology examination showed a cyst with nonkeratinized epithelium, and without goblet cells. After 10 years of follow-up, there have been no new lesions. DISCUSSION: Conjunctival primary orbital cysts are very uncommon. They are usually of small-moderate size; giant

Post-filarial cutaneous aspergillosis.

BACKGROUND: Aspergillus species are widely distributed in nature; however, cutaneous infections due to A. terreus are particularly rare. In this report, we describe a very uncommon case of primary cutaneous aspergillosis presenting as cauliflower-like skin lesions caused by A. terreus in a patient with preexisting bilateral filarial elephantiasis of the legs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Histopathological examination of the lesions revealed narrow, septate, branching, acute-angled hyphae with delicate chitinous walls and multinucleated giant cells in the dermis. RESULTS: The fungal isolate was ide

Ectopic ossification in the cranial dura mater in dialysis patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism.

We report the case of a 69-year-old woman with secondary hyperparathyroidism who underwent maintenance haemodialysis therapy for 17 years and who presented with severe dural calcification and right subdural haematoma. Her dura mater displayed a rock barnacle-like appearance, and cerebral superficial arteries adhered to the sclerotic lesions. On the microscopic observation, calcified tissue with a clear lamellar structure and osteopontin immunoreactivity was observed. Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase immunoreactive polynucleated giant cells infiltrated around the tissue. Such morphological p

Multicentric reticulohistiocytosis in a Malaysian Chinese lady: a case report and review of literature .

A 36-year-old Malaysian woman with erosive arthritis presented with multiple asymptomatic skin colored papulonodules on the hands, elbows, knees, ears, and feet; many macules, papules, and plaques were photodistributed. Progressive, erosive arthritis began about 18 months after the onset of skin involvement. Initially the patient was diagnosed to have dermatomyositis due to her skin findings, but later proved to have multicentric reticulohistiocytosis based on the typical histopathological features of histiocytic multinucleated giant cells with eosinophilic ground glass cytoplasm on skin biops
