INTRODUCTION: In Latin America, there are rising numbers of new HIV acquisitions, while the Caribbean has achieved decreases in both new acquisitions and AIDS-related deaths. The Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region has worked towards widely available treatment for people with HIV (PWHIV) within public health systems and, in Latin America, has relied principally on domestic financing to do so.
DISCUSSION: While new methods of prevention are in the process of being incorporated into regional HIV programmes, the HIV cascade of care remains below the UNAIDS goals. Only 17 of the 32 LAC coun

BACKGROUND: Transgender women (TGW) are disproportionately affected by HIV, and HIV prevalence among TGW in Thailand has been increasing. Although oral daily pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is effective for HIV prevention, PrEP uptake and persistence among TGW have been low. This study aimed to provide a deeper understanding of TGW's experiences with PrEP uptake and adherence, and to identify major barriers to PrEP use to inform intervention adaptation.
METHODS: We interviewed 20 young TGW (six non-PrEP users, eight adherent, six non-adherent) and 10 health care providers from two HIV clinics

Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) face unique treatment and care challenges which may differ by how they acquired HIV, whether vertically (in-utero, perinatal or postnatal exposure during breastfeeding) or sexually (sexual exposure). Distinguishing and documenting the mode of HIV acquisition (MOHA) is crucial to further research on the different needs and outcomes for ALHIV and to tailor HIV services to their needs. Age-based cut-offs have been used to attribute MOHA but have not been validated. We analysed data from a three-wave cohort of n = 1107 ALHIV part of a longitudinal study in South

OBJECTIVES: Despite declining TB notifications in Southern Africa, TB-related deaths remain high. We describe patient- and population-level trends in TB-related deaths in Eswatini over a period of 11 years.
METHODS: Patient-level (retrospective cohort, from 2009 to 2019) and population-level (ecological analysis, 2009-2017) predictors and rates of TB-related deaths were analysed in HIV-negative and HIV-coinfected first-line TB treatment cases and the population of the Shiselweni region. Patient-level TB treatment data, and population and HIV prevalence estimates were combined to obtain strati

OBJECTIVES: We compared mortality between HIV-positive and HIV-negative South African adults with drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) and high incidence of acquired second-line drug resistance.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of DR-TB patients with serial second-line TB drug susceptibility tests (2008-2015) who were hospitalized at a specialized TB hospital. We used Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox models to examine associations with mortality.
RESULTS: Of 245 patients, the median age was 33 years, 54% were male and 40% were HIV-positive, 96% of whom had ever received antiretrovira

OBJECTIVES: Multimorbidity is associated with mortality in high-income countries. Our objective was to investigate the relationship between multimorbidity (≥2 of the following chronic medical conditions: hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, anaemia, HIV, angina, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, alcohol dependence) and all-cause mortality in an older, rural black South African population. We further investigated the relationship between HIV multimorbidity (HIV as part of the multimorbidity cluster) and mortality, while testing for the effect of frailty in all models.

There are too many new HIV infections globally with 1.8 million persons infected in 2016 alone. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) holds potential to decrease new infections and is synergistic with efforts currently in place to achieve an end to the AIDS epidemic in Sub-Saharan African, but uptake is limited. Given its novelty, assessing the beliefs and attitudes of healthcare professionals and members of the community towards HIV transmission and PrEP will be helpful to inform implementation efforts. Study was a random survey of 201 community members and 51 healthcare providers, carried out at m

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of expanded access to antiretroviral treatment (ART) on maternal mortality in Johannesburg, South Africa between 2003 and 2012.
METHODS: Audit of patient files, birth registers and death certificates at a tertiary level referral hospital. Cause of death was assigned independently, by two reviewers. We compared causes of deaths and the maternal mortality ratios (MMR, deaths/100,000 live births) over three periods corresponding to changes in government policy on ART provision: period one, 2003-2004 (pre-ART); period two, 2005-2009 (ART eligibility with CD4 count

BACKGROUND: Currently, antiretroviral therapy (ART) is recommended for all HIV-positive patients with tuberculosis (TB). The timing of ART during the course of anti-TB treatment is based on CD4 cell counts. Access to CD4 cell testing is not universally available; this constitutes an obstacle for the provision of ART in low-income countries.
OBJECTIVE: To determine clinical variables associated with HIV co-infection in TB patients and to identify correlations between clinical variables and CD4 cell strata in HIV/TB co-infected subjects, with the aim of developing a clinical scoring system for

Evolutionary pressure by viruses is most likely responsible for the extraordinary allelic polymorphism of genes encoding class I human leukocyte antigens (HLA) and killer immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR). Such genetic diversity has functional implications for the immune response to viruses and generates population-based variations in HLA class I allele frequencies and KIR gene profiles. The HIV-1 virus has relatively recently established itself as a major human pathogen, rapidly diversifying into a variety of phylogenetic subtypes or clades (A-G) and recombinants in different populations. RATIONALE: Mortality is exceedingly high and rapid among patients infected with HIV and tuberculosis (TB), in part because of limited access to appropriate TB diagnostics. The microscopic observation drug-susceptibility (MODS) assay is a simple, rapid, low-cost test for TB and multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB, but data in individuals infected with HIV and in Africa are limited.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the MODS assay in a high-HIV-prevalence setting.
METHODS: We performed a prospective diagnostic accuracy study of consecutive adults suspected to have TB from outpatient and inpatient settings at a

Little information is available on pulmonary tuberculosis in infants in sub-Saharan Africa. This retrospective study was conducted in infants ranging in age from 1 to 23 months admitted to the Paediatric Departments of the University Hospital Centre in Brazzaville, Congo for pulmonary tuberculosis between January 1, 1999 and July 1, 2004. Tuberculosis was diagnosed on the basis of epidemiological, clinical, radiological, and follow-up data. All children over 12 months old underwent HIV testing. In case of positive test results, children between the ages of 12 and 18 months were retested after

In this case report authors have described a case of a 39 years old Caucasian single man who was unsuccessfully treated for an allergic reaction to drugs by multiple dermatologists, due to two etiologically different diseases. It was a classical second stage syphilitic infection and positive serologic tests for HIV infection, proved by screening and confirmatory tests. Syphilitic infection was treated and followed up by dermatologist and for the treatment of HIV infection, the patient was referred to the Centre for treatment HIV/AIDS in Kosice (Fig. 4, Ref. 3).

The predictive factors of HIV-1 drug resistance and its distribution are poorly documented in female sex workers (FSWs) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). However, the identification of predictive factors can lead to the development of improved and effective antiretroviral therapy (ART). The objective of the current study was to determine the predictive factors of HIV-1 drug resistance and its distribution based on FSWs in the studied regions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). HIV-positive FSWs who were diagnosed as part of the DRC Integrated Biological and Behavioral S

BACKGROUND: Digital health interventions (DHIs) can broaden the reach of HIV prevention interventions and overcome barriers for young cisgender men who have sex with men (YMSM). Community-based organizations (CBOs) have delivered HIV prevention interventions for decades, but few studies have examined how CBOs implement DHIs, including recruitment and retention. Keep It Up! (KIU!) is a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-designated best-evidence DHI that can promote risk reduction behaviors and reduce sexually transmitted infection incidence.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to descriptively assess

BACKGROUND: Male factory workers in China are vulnerable to HIV transmission. Commercial and nonmarital noncommercial contacts are the driving forces of heterosexual HIV transmission among male factory workers in China. There is a lack of effective HIV interventions for male factory workers in China.
OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this randomized controlled trial was to compare the efficacy of an enhanced versus the standard version of a WeChat mini program in reducing sexual intercourse with nonregular female sex partners and female sex workers among male factory workers in Shenzhen, Ch

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown a high prevalence of violence among young people in Kenya. Violence is a known risk factor for HIV acquisition and these two public health issues could be viewed as a syndemic. In 2010, Kenya became the third country to implement the Violence Against Children and Youth Survey (VACS). The study found a high prevalence of violence in the country. Led by the Government of Kenya, stakeholders implemented several prevention and response strategies to reduce violence. In 2019, Kenya implemented a second VACS. This study examines the changes in violence and ris

BACKGROUND: Elimination of vertical transmission of HIV remains a major global public health priority. In Malawi, more than one-third of pediatric HIV acquisitions are attributed to perinatal HIV acquisition during breastfeeding. HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a crucial biomedical tool to keep women free of HIV and eliminate vertical transmission, but effectiveness has been hampered by poor uptake and premature discontinuation. Implementation science approaches are needed to improve uptake, persistence, and adherence to PrEP among postpartum women at risk of HIV.
