Sparse Image Registration-Based Marker-Free Hand Acupoint Localization Using TCM Template Queries.

Deep learning for sensor-based medical imaging provides a non-contact and data-driven route for anatomical surface analysis and personalized traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) applications. However, accurate hand-acupoint localization from camera-acquired hand images remains challenging because expert-annotated acupoint datasets are limited and inter-subject anatomical variations are significant. This paper proposes a marker-free hand-acupoint localization method based on deep feature correspondence learning and sparse image registration. The task is formulated as template-to-target correspond

Acral Fibrochondromyxoid Tumor: Diagnostic Challenges and Multimodal Characterization in a Hand Mass Case.

Acral fibrochondromyxoid tumor (AFCMT) is a rare and recently characterized matrix-rich soft tissue occurring on acral sites. Here, we conducted a multi-dimensional analysis of AFCMT that occurred in the hands from clinical, image, pathological, and molecular perspectives, and discussed its clinicopathological features and diagnostic strategies. In general, the hand appears as a clearly demarcated lump. In the image, scattered calcifications can be observed, along with the proliferation of mucinous cartilage matrix. Microscopically, pale eosinophilic chondrocyte-like cells are suspended within

Alien Hand Syndrome as the Initial Presentation of Patent Foramen Ovale-Associated Stroke.

Alien Hand Syndrome (AHS) is a rare neurological condition characterized by involuntary, goal-directed movements of a limb without conscious control. It is most often associated with stroke in specific brain regions, including the medial frontal and parietal cortices. We report the case of a 33-year-old male with no previous medical history who presented with involuntary movements of the left upper limb, describing it as "moving on its own." Neurological examination was unremarkable, but MRI revealed multiple cortical infarcts in the right frontal and parietal lobes, with both acute and subacu

Ipsilateral contraction increases map area and decreases motor threshold for contralateral hand muscle.

Ipsilateral motor pathways projecting from primary motor cortex (M1) to the distal upper limb exist in humans, and activation of these ipsilateral pathways also facilitate corticomotor excitability of the contralateral homologous muscle. Handedness and biological sex potentially influence the motor cortical representations, however their influence on ipsilateral representations remain largely unexplored. Here, we investigated the effects of ipsilateral contraction on hand motor representation size and excitability, and examined whether these effects were dependent on handedness and/or biologic

[Expert consensus on T 1 rhizotomy for central hand flexion spasticity (2024 version)].

Central limb spasticity is a common complication after central nervous system injury, in which hand flexion spasticity often leads to the loss of the patient's ability to move. Reducing muscle tone and relieving spasticity are the prerequisites for restoring limb function. T 1 rhizotomy, which has been proposed in recent years, has proven to be effective in the treatment of central hand flexion spasticity. This consensus summarizes the etiology, symptoms, functional assessment of central hand flexion spasticity, and surgical indications for T 1 rhizotomy, surgical principles and procedures, an

Brain computer interface to recognize hand movements by magnification of subtle electroencephalogram patterns.

Brain-computer interfacing facilitates usage of medical devices such as Electroencephalograms to study brain activities using signal processing techniques. Hand movements are motor activities which cause signature electrical signals in the electroencephalogram recordings. Signal processing and machine learning can be used to remove artefact contamination, amplify subtle features associated with hand movement and classify them. This paper experiments to utilize mathematical models to extract features and classify hand movement from electroencephalogram data up to 98% accuracy based on tests per

Local cold injury affecting the hand and incident Raynaud's phenomenon - a case report.

There is an association between local cold injuries and Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) in the scientific literature, but the time relation and anatomical correlation have not been established. During military training in an Arctic setting, a previously healthy man in his early twenties sustained a freezing cold injury affecting mainly his right index finger. He subsequently developed Raynaud's phenomenon limited to only the part of the index finger that was originally affected by the cold injury. Medical investigation also revealed findings suggestive of subclinical peripheral neuropathy. This case

Does Surgical Simulation Improve Hand-Sewn Bowel Anastomosis Skill Acquisition? A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Hand-sewn bowel anastomosis (HSBA) has been largely replaced by surgical stapler technology. However, HSBA remains an essential skill for general surgeons during technical stapler failures or for anatomic constraints. This systematic review evaluates the current evidence on the effectiveness of open and laparoscopic simulators in enhancing the HSBA skills of general surgery trainees and surgeons. Primary outcomes include technical performance score improvements and operative time reductions. Secondary outcomes include self-perceived skill acquisition and cost. METHODS: Following

Readability of the Most Commonly Used Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Hand Surgery.

PURPOSE: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) assess surgical outcomes and patient perspectives on function, symptoms, and quality of life. The readability of patient-reported outcome measures is crucial for ensuring patients can understand and accurately complete them. The National Institutes of Health and American Medical Association recommend that patient materials be written at or below a sixth-grade reading level. We aimed to evaluate whether PROMs identified in the hand literature meet these recommended reading standards. METHODS: We conducted a readability analysis of 22 PROMs ref

Malignant Transformation of Multiple Hand Enchondromas Secondary to Ollier Disease: A Case Report.

Enchondromatosis secondary to Ollier disease (OD) is rare, with secondary chondrosarcomas (CS) accounting for only 1% of malignant osseous tumours. This is one of only two reports documenting four enchondromas of different bones of the same hand developing malignant transformation, with long-term follow-up. This is a 72-year-old female with histologically proven CS from multiple enchondromas of the index finger metacarpal and proximal phalanx, and middle finger proximal and middle phalanges. Six years following curettage and bone grafting, she showed no recurrence or metastases from CS. While
