Progestogens in Menopausal Hormone Therapy: A Double-Edged Sword.

Progestogens (norethisterone acetate, medroxyprogesterone acetate, dydrogesterone, micronized progesterone, levonorgestrel, drospirenone, and trimegestone) added to estrogen for endometrial protection are reviewed. They can be given orally or vaginally, norethisterone acetate can also be given transdermally, and levonorgestrel can be given through the intrauterine route. Sequential use of progestogens protects the endometrium if exposure lasts for at least 12 days/month; longer intervals are not safe. Continuous use of progestogens, whether oral, transdermal, or intrauterine, provides the most

How Hormonal Balance Changes Lives in Women with Psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated skin disease significantly impacting women, with disease severity often modulated by hormonal fluctuations. This review examines the influence of hormonal changes on the course of psoriasis in women, focusing on key life stages-including the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause-and their impact on disease progression and symptomatology. Estrogen, the principal female sex hormone, plays a critical role in immune modulation. Variations in estrogen levels, which occur naturally throughout a woman's life, are associated with fluctuations in

Updates in Hormone Replacement Therapy for Survivors of Gynecologic Cancers.

Symptoms of menopause and the sequelae of gynecologic cancer treatment can be severe in their physical and mental impact on patient quality of life. Survivors of certain gynecologic cancers - namely, early-stage, low-grade endometrial cancers; epithelial and germ cell ovarian cancers; and early-stage squamous cell cervical, vulvar, and vaginal cancers - as well as those who have undergone risk-reducing surgery for BRCA or Lynch syndrome mutations may safely use hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Treatment is ideally initiated in patients younger than age 60 or within ten years of menopause. Th

Melanin-concentrating hormone: A promising target for antidepressant treatment.

Depression represents a complex neuropsychiatric disorder with an escalating global health burden, characterized by heterogeneous pathophysiology and profound impairments in cognitive-emotional functioning. Current treatment methods have limited efficacy in some individuals and may induce undesirable side effects, necessitating the exploration of novel therapeutic targets and techniques. Emerging research has identified neuropeptide systems as pivotal regulators of mood-related circuits, with melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) signaling emerging as a particularly promising candidate for antid

Growth hormone replacement therapy in childhood-onset craniopharyngioma.

Tumour- or treatment related growth hormone (GH) deficiency is often observed in children diagnosed or treated for childhood onset craniopharyngioma (cCP). Adequate and timely GH replacement therapy (GHRT) is important to improve growth velocity and final height during childhood. GHRT may be continued through adulthood due to its beneficial effects on metabolic health, bone health, mental health and quality of life. The current evidence suggests no increased risk for tumour progression or recurrence, secondary neoplasms or mortality in cCP patients receiving GHRT. In children with newly diagno

Effect of menopause hormone therapy and serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

OBJECTIVE: Postmenopausal hypoestrogenism may cause significant changes in the oral cavity, interfering with inflammatory mechanisms such as salivary secretion. This study aimed to compare the salivary flow, pH levels and prevalence of dry mouth in postmenopausal women treated with hormone replacement therapy (HRT), those treated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and those without treatment. METHODS: Ninety postmenopausal women participated in the study. Of these, 30 used HRT, 30 used SSRIs and 30 did not receive any treatment (control). Salivary flow was measured using sti

Role of Thyroid Hormone in Neurodegenerative Disorders of Older People.

Thyroid dysfunction is associated with a number of neuropsychiatric manifestations. Cognitive decline is a common feature of hypothyroidism and clinical or subclinical hyperthyroidism. In addition, there is a significant association between thyroid hormone (TH) levels and the degree of cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD). The pathophysiology of TH-related neurodegeneration include changes in the blood-brain barrier, increased cellular stress, altered processing of β-amyloid precursor protein and the effect of TH on neuronal cell viability. The neurotoxicity of TH is partially medi

Hormonal Influences on Cognitive Function in Pituitary Neuroendocrine Tumors.

Pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs) represent prevalent central nervous system neoplasms frequently associated with endocrine disturbances and cognitive dysfunction. Cognitive function encompasses the brain's sophisticated capacity to acquire, process, and analyze external information. When severe cognitive impairment develops in these patients, it imposes substantial burdens on individuals, families, and society. This impairment may arise from various etiological factors, including tumor mass effect. Distinct from other common central nervous system tumors, PitNETs, owing to their uniqu

Plant Hormone Cytokinin as Aggregation Modulator of Gelsolin Amyloidosis.

Amyloidosis, a self-assembly of proteins or peptides, is associated with numerous degenerative diseases, such as gelsolin amyloidosis, which remain without a cure. Gelsolin protein is an actin-binding protein, but when aggregated in a diseased state, it is a potential drug target. Specifically, gelsolin mutations, N184K and D187Y, have been linked to renal amyloidosis and systemic progressive deposition of amyloids, respectively. Understanding how such mutations mitigate gelsolin aggregation and how this process can be prevented through small molecule inhibitors is of interest. Herein, we expl

Activation of steroid hormone receptors by metabolism-disrupting chemicals.

Exposure to metabolism-disrupting chemicals (MDCs), compounds largely belonging to the group of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), is associated with metabolic dysfunctions such as dyslipidemia, insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis. Steroid hormone receptors (SHRs) are known targets for MDCs but their regulatory environment in the presence of environmental chemicals remains elusive. Here, we studied the activation and molecular interactions of SHRs exposed to 17 suspected MDCs including pesticides, plasticizers, pharmaceuticals, flame retardants, industrial chemicals and their metaboli

Adropin: A cardio-metabolic hormone in the periphery, a neurohormone in the brain?

Whole-body metabolic homeostasis is regulated by physiological responses across organs and tissues to proteins and peptides (<50 amino acids) released into the interstitial and circulatory spaces. These secreted factors integrate signals of metabolic status at both the cellular and systemic level, regulate the intake and distribution of ingested and stored energy substrates across tissues, and minimize toxicity from excessive excursions in circulating concentrations of energy substrates (for example, glucotoxicity and lipotoxicity). The proteins and peptides that are known to be secreted into

Parathyroid Hormone Fluctuations During Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Stress hormone levels such as cortisol and epinephrine increase with general anesthesia (GA) and surgery. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) has been shown to increase with GA in those undergoing parathyroidectomy (PT) with abnormal parathyroid function, but there are conflicting reports of it in those with normal parathyroid function. In this study, we aim to determine the effects of anesthetic and surgical stress on those with abnormal parathyroid function undergoing PTs as well as those with normal parathyroid function undergoing unilateral/total thyroidectomies (UTs/TTs). STUDY DESIGN:

"Cycles of Clockwork Precision": Hormonal Contraception and Natural Menstruation.

When the birth control pill was introduced at the beginning of the 1960s, it was primarily used to regulate women's menstrual cycles. Medical historians have argued that such a naturalised menstrual cycle did not exist until hormonal products were used to regulate it. Menstrual irregularities had been the go-to indication for hormonal products, long before hormones were specifically produced for contraceptive purposes. This paper traces the concurrent development of the notion of a "natural cycle" and respective marketing strategies to promote Sequilar, the first sequential birth control pill

Chromosomal and hormonal factors involved in human sexual dimorphism.

Males and females show significant differences in body structure, typical behavior, average life expectancy, and disease susceptibility. This review article introduces the current understanding and recent findings on the factors that lead to sexual dimorphism. First, recent studies have shown that sex chromosomes underlie male- and female-specific phenotypes through various mechanisms. For example, X chromosome inactivation exerts both positive and negative effects on female health, independent of sex hormone actions. Furthermore, differences in the frequency and clinical consequences of the m

Appetite sensations and hormonal secretion in patients with adamantinomatous craniopharyngioma.

PURPOSE: Patients with adamantinomatous craniopharyngiomas (aCP) often present hypothalamic involvement (HI) either by the tumor or therapeutic interventions, resulting in hypothalamic obesity (HyOb). This study aims to investigate how appetite sensations and orexigenic and anorexigenic hormones response may contribute to the HyOb pathogenesis in these subjects. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients with aCP submitted to surgical resection (31,1 ± 12 years; 9 women) and 15 controls (31 ± 11,7 years) paired by sex, age and BMI were included in this cross-sectional study. Phytohormones revisited: what makes a compound a hormone in plants.

Since the discovery of auxins as cell division factors a century ago, impressive scientific advances related to phytohormones have revolutionized plant sciences and human progress. This review examines the key features of the ten hormonal groups that operate in plants, here referred to as the 'classical ten': auxins, gibberellins (GAs), cytokinins (CKs), abscisic acid (ABA), ethylene (ETH), salicylates (SAs), jasmonates (JAs), brassinosteroids (BRs), peptide hormones (PEPs), and strigolactones (SLs). By leveraging historical data and sharpening the essentials of each hormonal group, their majo

Elimination of certain honeybee venom activities by adipokinetic hormone.

The primary aim of this study was to analyse the influence of honeybee venom on various aspects of Drosophila melanogaster physiology and to assess the efficacy of adipokinetic hormone (AKH) in mitigating venom toxicity. We examined the harmful effects of venom on the thoracic muscles and central nervous system of Drosophila, as well as the potential use of AKH to counteract these effects. The results demonstrated that envenomation altered AKH levels in the Drosophila CNS, promoted cell metabolism, as evidenced by an increase in citrate synthase activity in muscles, and improved relative cell

The strategies of orthodontic treatment in children with growth hormone deficiency.

Estrogen and its receptor play a positive role in the development of osteoarthritis (OA). Psoralen is a plant-derived estrogen analog. This study aimed to verify whether psoralen inhibits OA through an estrogen-like effect. First, human primary chondrocytes in the late stage of OA were extracted to complete collagen type II immunofluorescence staining and cell proliferation experiments. Subsequently, estrogen, psoralen and estrogen receptor antagonists were co-cultured with OA chondrocytes, and RT-PCR was performed to detect the gene expression. A rabbit OA model was subsequently made by anter
