Comparative language performance in children and adolescents with 22q11.2ds syndrome and down syndrome.

Genetically defined neurodevelopmental syndromes provide a framework for examining constraints on language development. This study compared language performance in children and adolescents with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS; n = 40) and Down syndrome (DS; n = 40), matched for age and nonverbal cognitive ability, aged 6-16 years. Standardized assessments included the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals (CELF-5) and the BLOC-C to evaluate multiple receptive and expressive language domains. Group differences, effect sizes, and associations with age were analyzed to characterize sy

Parental Input and Its Relationship With Language Outcomes in Children With (Suspected) Developmental Language Disorder: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: It is widely acknowledged that parental input plays an important role in typical language development. Less is known about the input provided to children with (suspected) developmental language disorder (DLD) or those at risk for DLD. These children may not benefit from parental input in the same way as their typically developing peers, and different aspects of parental input may be more important for them. The present systematic literature review aimed to uncover (a) how parental input has been assessed in the context of DLD, (b) which aspects of parental input have been studied, and

Authorship Inequity in Global Health Research Conducted in Low- and Middle-Income Countries and Published in High-Income Country Family Medicine Journals.

PURPOSE: The current structures of global health research and academic authorship have resulted in underrepresentation of authors from low- and middle-income countries. Although authorship inequity has been shown in other specialties, the current status of authorship in family medicine has not been examined. METHODS: We conducted a bibliometric analysis of World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) journals based in high-income countries for articles describing research conducted in low-income countries, lower-middle-income countries, and upper-middle-income countries from 2018 to 2023. The impact of therapeutic hypothermia on developmental outcomes in lower-middle income countries: A systematic review and meta-analysis with a health equity lens.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) from birth asphyxia is particularly burdensome on lower-middle income countries (LMICs). Our systematic review examined early and late developmental outcomes related to neonatal therapeutic hypothermia (TH) without disability thresholds or cut-offs pre-determined by high-income countries. A search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases yielded 364 articles; 11 studies met eligibility criteria. According to published standards for reporting of studies, 3 of the 11 studies were good quality and 8 studies were excellent. Within-group changes in early

[Poorer countries have more pro-breastfeeding actions than rich countries: ecological study of 98 countries].

This study aimed to verify the association between gross domestic product values - purchasing power parity (GDP PPP) and scores of the World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative (WBTi) tool. This is an ecological study carried out with 98 low-income (n = 43), middle-income (n = 27), and high-income (n = 28) countries. The evaluation of pro-breastfeeding actions was obtained from the WBTi and the GDP PPP from the World Bank. The mean and standard deviation (SD) of the total and each item WBTi scores were estimated. ANOVA and Tukey's test were used to compare the means of the WBTi tool according to t

46,XX disorder of sex development associated with skin abnormalities due to homozygous R-Spondin 1 loss of function mutation.

A child, who was reared as male, presented in his early childhood to the endocrine clinic with penoscrotal hypospadias which was noticed at birth. On examination, he had both gonads in the scrotal sacs with complete scrotal fusion, rugosities and chordee with a single opening. He had increased palmoplantar skin desquamation. As an initial part of the workup, karyotyping was done, which was 46,XX. To rule out the most common cause of 46,XX disorder of sex development (DSD) in phenotypical males (SRY - Sex Determining Region Y gene - translocation), fluorescent in situ hybridisation for SRY was

46,XX Differences of Sex Development outside congenital adrenal hyperplasia: pathogenesis, clinical aspects, puberty, sex hormone replacement therapy and fertility outcomes.

The term 'differences of sex development' (DSD) refers to a group of congenital conditions that are associated with atypical development of chromosomal, gonadal, and/or anatomical sex. DSD in individuals with a 46,XX karyotype can occur due to fetal or postnatal exposure to elevated amount of androgens or maldevelopment of internal genitalia. Clinical phenotype could be quite variable and for this reason these conditions could be diagnosed at birth, in newborns with atypical genitalia, but also even later in life, due to progressive virilization during adolescence, or pubertal delay. Long-read genome sequencing reveals a novel intronic retroelement insertion in NR5A1 associated with 46,XY differences of sexual development.

Despite significant advancements in rare genetic disease diagnostics, many patients with rare genetic disease remain without a molecular diagnosis. Novel tools and methods are needed to improve the detection of disease-associated variants and understand the genetic basis of many rare diseases. Long-read genome sequencing provides improved sequencing in highly repetitive, homologous, and low-complexity regions, and improved assessment of structural variation and complex genomic rearrangements compared to short-read genome sequencing. As such, it is a promising method to explore overlooked genet

The ILAE consensus classification of focal cortical dysplasia: An update proposed by an ad hoc task force of the ILAE diagnostic methods commission.

Ongoing challenges in diagnosing focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) mandate continuous research and consensus agreement to improve disease definition and classification. An International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) Task Force (TF) reviewed the FCD classification of 2011 to identify existing gaps and provide a timely update. The following methodology was applied to achieve this goal: a survey of published literature indexed with ((Focal Cortical Dysplasia) AND (epilepsy)) between 01/01/2012 and 06/30/2021 (n = 1349) in PubMed identified the knowledge gained since 2012 and new developments in the

Development of an Eco-Biodevelopmental Model of Emergent Literacy Before Kindergarten: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Literacy has been described as an important social determinant of health. Its components emerge in infancy and are dependent on genetic, medical, and environmental factors. The American Academy of Pediatrics advocates a substantial role for pediatricians in literacy promotion, developmental surveillance, and school readiness to promote cognitive, relational, and brain development. Many children, especially those from minority and underserved households, enter kindergarten unprepared to learn to read and subsequently have difficulty in school. OBSERVATIONS: Emergent literacy is a d

Maternal interactive beliefs and style as predictors of language development in preterm and full term children.

Previous research has shown that the quality of mother-child interactions between pre-term children and their mothers tends to be poorer than that of full-term children and their mothers (Forcada-Guex, Pierrehumbert, Borghini, Moessinger & Muller-Nix, 2006). Mothers of pre-term children are less responsive and more intrusive in interactions with their children than mothers of full-term children (Forcada-Guex et al., 2006; Ionio, Lista, Mascheroni, Olivari, Confalonieri, Mastrangelo, Brazzoduro, Balestriero, Banfi, Bonanomi, Bova, Castoldi, Colombo, Introvini & Scelsa, 2017; Laing, McMahon, Ung

Biomarkers of fetal conditions: Finger ridge-counts, facial fluctuating asymmetry, and digit ratio (2D:4D)-are they correlated in women?

OBJECTIVES: Fetal environmental conditions are crucial for life-long health. Direct measurements of developmental conditions are limited in humans; thus, several biomarkers of those conditions have been proposed: that is, finger ridge-counts, level of facial fluctuating asymmetry (FA), and digit ratio (2D:4D). Since all of these biomarkers share a similar gestational time of formation, we hypothesize that their values are significantly correlated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected at the Mogielica Human Ecology Study Site in southern Poland among 234 women. Finger ridge-counts, level

Maternal and fetal vitamin D and their roles in mineral homeostasis and fetal bone development.

During pregnancy, female physiology adapts to meet the additional mineral demands of the developing fetus. Meanwhile, the fetus actively transports minerals across the placenta and maintains high circulating levels to mineralize the rapidly developing skeleton. Most of this mineral is accreted during the last trimester, including 30 g of calcium, 20 g of phosphate and 0.8 g of magnesium. Given the dependence of calcium homeostasis on vitamin D and calcitriol in the adult and child, it may be expected that vitamin D sufficiency would be even more critical during pregnancy and fetal development.
