Moderate hyperhomocysteinemia is associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis, thrombosis and neurodegenerative diseases. Homocysteine accumulation in the blood can be due to many underlying causes, which may interact with each other, e.g. genetic disposition and B-vitamin status. The role of the sulfur-containing amino acid homocysteine in the pathogenesis of diseases remains unclear, even if many studies suggest a causal relationship between homocysteine-mediated processes like oxidative stress, NO-inactivation and endothelial deficiency and atherogenesis. Proposed mechanisms of acti

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfate (DHEAS) are the main adrenal androgens (AAs) produced in humans. Production of these steroids, like that of cortisol, is under the control of hypothalamic corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and pituitary ACTH. Other factors, however, appear to be involved in AA secretion because there are many instances in which their circulating levels do not change in parallel to those of cortisol. Apart from physiological alterations associated with fetal adrenal regression, adrenarche and aging, the main instances of divergence in AA production compared with

Aquired immune hemolytic anemias are classified in autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) of warm type, cold agglutinine disease, paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, drug-induced immune hemolytic anemia, and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. The autoantibodies in AIHA of warm type react most strongly at 37 degrees C (warm autoantibodies). They are of the IgG, less commonly of the IgM and IgA classes. The cause of autoimmunization remains obscure in 50% of the patients (idiopathic AIHA). In the remaining cases, the AIHA is associated with other diseases. Corticosteroids are the mainstay of therapy,

Advances in immune visualization have enabled the physical tracking of immune responses in vivo. The adaptation of such technology to models of infectious disease holds the promise of a more detailed analysis of host-pathogen interactions in a natural setting. However, the visualization of pathogen-specific immune responses in vivo confronts challenges that are inherent to the study of infectious disease systems. Recent attempts to track pathogen-specific immune responses in vivo validate the usefulness and underline the complexity of this experimental strategy.

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive bacterium that is often used to study the mammalian immune response to infection because it is easy to culture, is relatively safe to work with and causes a highly predictable infection in laboratory mice. The broad application of this mouse model has resulted in a torrent of studies characterizing the contributions of different cytokines, receptors, adaptors and effector molecules to resistance against infection with Listeria monocytogenes. These studies, which are yielding one of the most comprehensive pictures of the 'battle' between host and microo

DNA vaccines represent a new approach to the control of infectious disease. Both cellular and humoral immune responses are induced without the attendant concerns associated with live, attenuated vaccines. The vast majority of DNA vaccines are delivered by parental routes, which rarely elicit immune responses at the mucosal epithelia, the primary sites of pathogen transmission. In view of the importance of mucosal and regional lymph node immunity in the control of pathogens transmitted across the mucosal epithelia, a number of groups, including our own, have developed immunization strategies th

Pauci-immune crescentic glomerulonephritis (PICGN) is a rapidly progressive condition leading to renal failure within days or weeks and is potentially life threatening. Majority of these patients have clinical or pathological evidence of systemic vasculitis. PICGN may occur as renal limited disease or as a component of systemic necrotising small vessel vasculitis. Majority of these cases are attributed to Wegener's granulomatosis (WG), microscopic polyangitis (MPA) or Churg Strauss syndrome (CSS). Renal involvement is encountered in 80 to 90% cases of WG and MPA and in about 45% cases of CSS.

Chicken-pox is one more newer vaccine in our armamentarium against infectious diseases. Due to its extremely contagious nature, varicella is experienced by almost every child or young adult in the world. Each year from 1990 to 1994, prior to availability of varicella vaccine, about 4 million cases of varicella occurred in the United States. Of these cases approximately 10,000 required hospitalization and 100 died. Although varicella is not commonly perceived as an important public health problem, the socioeconomic consequences in industrialized countries of a disease that affects practically e

Space flight and models that created conditions similar to those that occur during space flight have been shown to affect a variety of immunological responses. These have primarily been cell-mediated immune responses including leukocyte proliferation, cytokine production, and leukocyte subset distribution. The mechanisms and biomedical consequences of these changes remain to be established. Among the possible causes of space flight-induced alterations in immune responses are exposure to microgravity, exposure to stress, exposure to radiation, and many more as yet undetermined causes. This revi

Although vaccine manufacturers make no specific recommendations regarding the vaccination of older horses and ponies, the similarities in age-induced immunologic changes between human beings and equids suggests that similar vaccination recommendations should be followed. The need for vaccination of the older horse depends, of course, on the relative risk of exposure for the individual horse. Particular care should be taken when using attenuated vaccine products because these live agents may pose a unique risk to the older individual. Immunization with inactivated agent vaccines is likely to be

This chapter discusses various levels of interactions between the brain and the immune system in sleep. Sleep-wake behavior and the architecture of sleep are influenced by microbial products and cytokines. On the other hand, sleep processes, and perhaps also specific sleep states, appear to promote the production and/or release of certain cytokines. The effects of immune factors such as endotoxin and cytokines on sleep reveal species specificity and usually strong dependence on parameters such as substance concentration, time relative to administration or infection with microbial products, and

OBJECTIVE: To review the published literature on immunizing nonbone marrow transplant adult cancer patients, summarize the findings, and make recommendations for the use of vaccines in this population.
DATA SOURCE: A search of MEDLINE and CancerLit was conducted (1966-June 2001) to find English-language clinical studies and review articles pertaining to immunization, vaccines, and cancer in humans. Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices were used extensively. References of each identified article were subsequently reviewed for additional relevant articles.

The recommendations for routine childhood immunizations undergo continuous re-evaluation and are periodically amended. As a result of the near complete elimination of wild-type poliomyelitis, the oral poliomyelitis live vaccine (OPV) has been replaced by the inactivated vaccine (IPV) for the primary series in infancy. Recent seroepidemiologic data on the dynamics of decay of maternal measles antibodies in infants may lead to the recommendation of administering the first dose of the measles mumps rubella (MMR) vaccine at twelve months rather than at 15 to 23 months of age. The recently introduc

Possible connections between immunization and developmental disorders, most notably autistic disorders, have been the subject of a great deal of debate and have caused much concern for parents who want to make the safest choices for their children. Anxiety has risen steadily since the mid-1990s, when a medical investigative team led by A Wakefield postulated that the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine may be a causative factor in the development of autism spectrum disorder. Since this initial publication, immunization remains controversial for some parents and the uptake of the MMR vaccine ha

The multifaceted dialogue between intracellular bacteria and the mammalian host continues to be an exciting issue from both the scientific and public-health viewpoint. The recent year has witnessed some particularly impressive progress in knowledge about the two major culprits affecting the health of mankind, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Salmonella typhi - the causative agents of tuberculosis and typhoid fever.

Hookworms infect perhaps one-fifth of the entire human population, yet little is known about their interaction with our immune system. The two major species are Necator americanus, which is adapted to tropical conditions, and Ancylostoma duodenale, which predominates in more temperate zones. While having many common features, they also differ in several key aspects of their biology. Host immune responses are triggered by larval invasion of the skin, larval migration through the circulation and lungs, and worm establishment in the intestine, where adult worms feed on blood and mucosa while inje

Knowledge of the immune responses which develop in cattle following infection with Mycobacterium bovis is essential both to the understanding of disease pathogenesis and to the logical development of immune-dependent tools, such as diagnostic tests and vaccines, which can be used to combat the disease. Studies of field cases of bovine tuberculosis (TB) and of experimental bovine models of M. bovis infection have indicated that cell-mediated immune responses (CMI) predominate within a spectrum of immunity which exists. This paper reviews aspects of recent research and indicates how knowledge of

Immune security of blood donation is defined by all means aiming at reducing or eliminating the immune risk related to blood donation. It concerns the whole transfusion process from the blood donor to the receiver. The immune risk of blood donation is directly related to the polymorphism of molecular and cellular blood groups systems. Immune security consists in avoiding the meeting of antigens and augmented by the direct baneful consequences of the immune conflict. This requires the previous immune characterisation of blood products and of the patients and of their compatibility, which must b
