Totally implanted access port-related infections are responsible for their own morbidity and mortality. Main risk factors of totally implanted access port-related infections are total parenteral nutrition, young age, difficulties during insertion, poor general status and neutropenia. Recent guidelines defined intravascular catheter-related infections. This relies on a strict clinical and microbiological work-up including simultaneous culture of blood drawn from the catheter and a peripheral vein. The search for local or general complications is mandatory: clinical and possibly echographic asse

Cytauxzoonosis, caused by Cytauxzoon felis, is a regionally common, often fatal tick-borne disease primarily affecting the domestic cat. Retrospective analysis of case records from January 1995 to June 2005 identified 148 domestic cats diagnosed with cytauxzoonosis, having suitable archived lung sections. Lung sections were examined and graded on relevant parameters, the chief purpose of which was to characterize the pulmonary lesion of fatal feline cytauxzoonosis. Parameters were scored 0 to 3 for no lesion, mild, moderate, and severe, respectively. Evaluated parameters included the presence

Inquiries into the relationships between viral respiratory tract illnesses and the inception and exacerbation of asthma are being facilitated by recent advances in research approaches and technology. In this article we identify important knowledge gaps and future research questions, and we discuss how new investigational tools, including improved respiratory tract virus detection techniques, will permit current and future researchers to define these relationships and the host, virus, developmental, and environmental mechanisms that regulate them. A better understanding of these processes shoul

Oral candidosis is the most common fungal infection encountered in general dental practice. It manifests in a variety of clinical presentations which may mimic more sinister diseases, and can occasionally be refractory to treatment requiring the attention of an oral medicine specialist. Management of oral candidosis should always include a thorough investigation of underlying predisposing conditions, as the disease often presents when the patient is systemically compromised. This update highlights the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and management strategies of oral Candidal lesions commo

Viral infections may have an important role in the pathogenesis of biliary atresia, and related clinical outcomes. In this research for determination of the possible role of HBV, HCV, HCMV, adenovirus, and BK virus infections in biliary atresia related clinical complications, the molecular and antigenic prevalence of these viral agents were studied. In this retrospective study, 34 formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) biopsy and autopsy liver tissue samples of neonates with biliary atresia were evaluated. The molecular prevalence of these viral infections was assayed by different PCR and RT-

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the incidence, characteristics and predictors of infections in patients with PM and DM.
METHODS: The medical records of 192 PM/DM patients followed up in a tertiary teaching medical centre from 1999 to 2008 were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: Seventy-six episodes of major infection, defined as infections requiring>1 week of treatment with anti-microbial agents, occurred in 53 (27.6%) patients, and 15 (7.8%) patients had two or more episodes. The incidence rate of major infections was 11.1 episodes per 100 patient-years in PM/DM patients. Aspiration pneumonia [n (%

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Intestinal parasites are widely prevalent in developing countries, probably due to poor sanitation and inadequate personal hygiene. It is estimated that as much as 60% of the world's population is infected with intestinal parasites, which may play a significant role in morbidity due to intestinal infections. This study was designed to estimate the prevalence of helminthic infections among school children in Puducherry, South India.
METHODS: The prevalence of helminthic infections was studied in 1,172 children in public schools in Puducherry (Pondicherry), South India, betw

Exploiting the RNA interference (RNAi) pathway to inhibit viral gene expression has become an active field of research. The approach has potential for therapeutic application and several viruses are susceptible to RNAi-mediated knockdown. Differences in the characteristics of individual viruses require that viral gene silencing be tailored to specific infections. Important considerations are viral tissue tropism, acute or chronic nature of the infection and the efficiency with which antiviral sequences can be delivered to affected tissue. Both synthetic short interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and expr

Legionella pneumophila is an important causative agent of pneumonia in humans which is difficult to diagnose because the signs and symptoms are nonspecific and do not distinguish Legionella infection from other common causes of pneumonia. Currently, the diagnosis of Legionnaires' disease is based on phenotyping (culture, antibody detection in human sera, antigen detection in urine) and genotyping methods such as PCR (polymerase chain reaction). This review focuses on current diagnostic tests for surveillance of Legionella pneumophila infections in Poland.

BACKGROUND: A relatively underestimated facet of infectious diseases is the association of chronic bacterial and parasitic infections with cancer development. Therefore, we sought to evaluate the evidence regarding the association of such infections with the development of malignancy, excluding the overwhelming evidence of the association of Helicobacter pylori and cancer.
METHODOLOGY: We searched Pubmed, Cochrane, and Scopus without time limits for relevant articles.
RESULTS: There is evidence that some bacterial and parasitic infections are associated with cancer development. The level of

Whipple's disease is a rare multi-systemic disease associated with the ubiquitous environmental bacterium Tropheryma whipplei. Over the last 10 years, since the isolation of the bacterium, recent advances in medical microbiology, epidemiology and cellular biology have provided major insights into the understanding of the pathophysiology of T. whipplei infections that may result in Whipple's disease.

Influenza A virus infections may spread rapidly in human populations and cause variable mortality. Two of these influenza viruses have been designated as select agents: 1918 H1N1 virus and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus. Knowledge of the pathology of these virus infections in humans, other naturally infected species, and experimental animals is important to understand the pathogenesis of influenza, to design appropriate models for evaluation of medical countermeasures, and to make correct diagnoses. The most important complication of influenza in humans is viral pneumonia, whic

Waste from cattle production contains protozoa, such as Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia, which can be transmitted to humans. People residing in areas of high cattle density may be at increased risk for protozoan infections. The objective of this study was to assess spatial and temporal associations between cattle density and hospitalizations for protozoan infections in the U.S. elderly. Data on protozoan infections were abstracted from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services datasets for a 14-year period (1991-2004). Cattle inventory data were abstracted from the 2002 U.S. Census of Agricu

Ureteral stents are commonly used in the field of urology, and, given their indwelling nature, are often a nidus for infection and a cause of discomfort. To minimize symptoms, the urologic surgeon should first consider whether a stent needs to be placed at all. Softer stents do not seem to improve patient comfort. Stents that are too long, specifically those that cross the midline of the bladder, significantly increase the frequency of stent-related symptoms. Administering alpha blockers while the stent is indwelling can reduce these symptoms. Antibiotic prophylaxis or concomitant antibiotic a

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a serious health problem affecting millions of people each year. Infections of the urinary tract are the second most common type of infection in the body. Catheterization of the urinary tract is the most common factor, which predisposes the host to these infections. Catheter-associated UTI (CAUTI) is responsible for 40% of nosocomial infections, making it the most common cause of nosocomial infection. CAUTI accounts for more than 1 million cases in hospitals and nursing homes annually and often involve uropathogens other than Escherichia coli. While the epid
