Bacterial enteritis caused by Salmonella Kedougou after returning from Thailand: A case report.

Non-typhoid Salmonella (NTS) includes many serotypes that differ in host, geographic distribution, and virulence. We report the case of a 64-year-old man who developed enteritis caused by Salmonella Kedougou without bacteremia after returning from Thailand. The patient stayed in Chiang Mai, Thailand, for 10 days to play golf and was hospitalized with fever, chills, watery diarrhea, and vomiting on the day the patient returned to Japan. The patient was treated with intravenous azithromycin followed by ceftriaxone for 6 days. NTS was detected in the patient's stool culture, and additional strain

Implementing an electromagnetic tracking navigation system improves the precision of endoscopic transgastric necrosectomy in an ex vivo model.

Endoscopic transgastric necrosectomy is crucial in the management of complications resulting from necrotizing pancreatitis. However, both real-time and visual-spatial information is lacking during the procedure, thereby jeopardizing a precise positioning of the endoscope. We conducted a proof-of-concept study with the aim of overcoming these technical difficulties. For this purpose, a three-dimensional (3D) phantom of a stomach and pancreatic necroses was 3D-printed based on spatial information from individual patient CT scans and subsequently integrated into a silicone torso. An electromagnet

A review of bites by non-front-fanged snakes (NFFS) of Europe.

Non-front-fanged snakes (NFFS) have long been overlooked by snake venom research, likely due to most of them being considered non-medically relevant for humans. The paucity of information about composition and activities of NFFS venoms and oral secretions makes it difficult to assess whether a given species can inflict medically significant bites. Here, we provide a review of the information currently available about the symptoms/signs elicited by bites from European NFFS, aiming to offer a foundation for understanding the threat they pose in terms of snakebite. Despite an overall limited amou

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a human viral infectious disease involving the central nervous system (CNS). It is caused by the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV). At present, there is very limited information regarding the clinical importance and health burden of TBE infections without signs of CNS inflammation. Moreover, such cases are omitted from official TBE surveillances and there are no reports of population-based studies. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A nationwide population-based study was conducted in Latvia by intensively searching for symptomatic TBEV infections recorded i

Understanding the Impact of COVID-19 on Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) Caregiving and Related Resource Needs.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) caregivers play a central role in disease management-a role that has been heightened during the COVID-19 pandemic given the healthcare system's reliance on frontline family caregivers and CLL patients' increased risk of infection and mortality. Using a mixed-method design, we investigated the impact of the pandemic on CLL caregivers (Aim 1) and their perceived resource needs (Aim 2): 575 CLL caregivers responded to an online survey; 12 spousal CLL caregivers were interviewed. Two open-ended survey items were thematically analyzed and compared with interview f

Novel method for predicting nonvisible symptoms using machine learning in cancer palliative care.

End-of-life patients with cancer may find expressing their symptoms difficult if they can no longer communicate verbally because of deteriorating health. In this study, we assessed these symptoms using machine learning, which has excellent predictive capabilities and has recently been applied in healthcare. We performed a retrospective clinical survey involving 213 patients with cancer from August 2015 to August 2016. We divided the reported symptoms into two groups-visible and nonvisible symptoms. We used decision tree analysis, an analytical machine learning method that organizes and analyze

How brain diseases affect the lower urinary tract function?

This article reviewed brain mechanism of the lower urinary tract (LUT). Among autonomic nervous systems, LUT is unique in terms of afferent pathophysiology; bladder sensation is perceived soon after the storage phase and throughout the voiding phase. Within the brain, this is measured in experimental animals by the firing of single neurons and in humans by evoked potentials/functional neuroimaging. The evidence indicates that sphincter information goes up to the precentral motor cortex and other brain areas, and bladder information goes up to the insular cortex (IC)/anterior cingulate (ACG) an

Parosmia and altered taste in patients recovering from Covid 19.

Parosmia is a well-documented consequence of smell loss associated with Covid 19. Those who experience this qualitative olfactory disorder during recovery find that the odour of common foods and household items is distorted, and the experience can range from merely altered to profoundly disgusting. This can lead to a greatly altered relationship with food, including the physical symptoms of loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, as well as wider reaching issues such as withdrawal from social situations, emotional distancing from others in their close social circles, and anhedonia. There is at pre

Next-generation sequencing in the evaluation of biliary strictures in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis.

BACKGROUND: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a well-described risk factor for the development of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). Early detection of CCA in these patients is of great importance because it expands options for therapeutic interventions, including liver transplantation. Current diagnostic tests for the evaluation of biliary strictures are limited to biliary brushing (BB) cytology and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has become an important diagnostic tool in oncology and may be a useful tool for diagnosing CCA on BBs. It is not clear how

Treatment against helminths in Norwegian sheep: a questionnaire-based survey.

A questionnaire was distributed to 5487 farmers throughout Norway in order to obtain information about management practices regarding helminth infections in sheep. In addition, the farmers' perceptions of helminths and anthelmintic efficacy were investigated. Most farmers (80%) treated prophylactically against nematodes, and 24% also used prophylactic treatment against Fasciola hepatica. Overall, few farmers (11%) used parasitological analysis as a tool to assess the timing of treatment, but rather based it on other factors such as previous experience (70%). In the surveyed sheep flocks, the u

Diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in hairy cell leukemia-variant: where are we in 2021?

INTRODUCTION: Hairy cell leukemia-variant (HCL-V) is a rare B-cell neoplasm arising or homing primarily in the spleen. It has been considered in the WHO classification of Hemopoietic and Lymphoid Tumors as a provisional entity since 2008 and included under the umbrella of unclassifiable splenomegalic B-cell leukemia/lymphomas. The diagnosis is a challenge to hematopathologists and management of these patients by the clinicians is difficult due to the lack of diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines and prospective studies.
