Epidemiology of Herpes Zoster in Adults in Mexico: A Retrospective Database Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The risk of herpes zoster (HZ) increases with age. In countries with an ageing population such as Mexico, a rise in the risk of HZ and complications is expected. The goal of this study was to provide an updated estimate of the potential burden of HZ and associated complications in Mexico. METHODS: A retrospective database study was performed using data from the national surveillance database of the Ministry of Health (Secretaría de Salubridad y Asistencia/Dirección General de Información en Salud). HZ cases and associated complications were identified via the International Class

Common Combinations of Pregestational Diagnosis and Pregnancy Complications.

Objective Single pregestational diagnoses have been demonstrated to be associated with pregnancy-related complications. But, the effect of multiple diagnoses is understudied. The objective of this study is to determine the most common combinations of pregestational diagnoses and to determine if specific combinations increase the risk of pregnancy-related complications. Study design We performed a cross-sectional study of the 2016 Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project's National Inpatient Sample (HCUP NIS) database. Inclusion criteria were: Diagnosis-related groups assumed to be associated wi

Causes of preterm and low birth weight neonatal mortality in a rural community in Kenya: evidence from verbal and social autopsy.

BACKGROUND: Under-five mortality in Kenya has declined over the past two decades. However, the reduction in the neonatal mortality rate has remained stagnant. In a country with weak civil registration and vital statistics systems, there is an evident gap in documentation of mortality and its causes among low birth weight (LBW) and preterm neonates. We aimed to establish causes of neonatal LBW and preterm mortality in Migori County, among participants of the PTBI-K (Preterm Birth Initiative-Kenya) study. METHODS: Verbal and social autopsy (VASA) interviews were conducted with caregivers of dec

The Impact of Plastic Surgery Volume on Inpatient Burn Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Acute burn care involves multiple types of physicians. Plastic surgery offers the full spectrum of acute burn care and reconstructive surgery. The authors hypothesize that access to plastic surgery will be associated with improved inpatient outcomes in the treatment of acute burns. METHODS: Acute burn encounters with known percentage total body surface area were extracted from the National Inpatient Sample from 2012 to 2014 based on International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Edition, codes. Plastic surgery volume per facility was determined based on procedure codes for flaps,

Prevalence and Trends in Management of Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus in the United States: Insights from the National Inpatient Sample.

BACKGROUND: Over the past 2 decades, management of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) has evolved significantly. In the current study, we sought to evaluate the national prevalence and management trends of iNPH in the United States using a national database. METHODS: The National Inpatient Sample was queried for patients with an International Classification of Diseases diagnosis code for iNPH from 2007 to 2017. Trends in prevalence and procedure type were evaluated per 100,000 discharges and as a percentage of discharges, using weighted discharges. Utilization of procedure type a

Methadone maintenance treatment and survival of schizophrenic patients with a lifetime comorbid substance use disorders: a long-term follow-up study.

Background Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) remains the most widely used effective therapeutic approach for opioid use disorders. However, there is paucity of empirical data regarding the relationship between the MMT and survival of subjects with schizophrenia. Aim The aim of this study was to examine the effect of MMT on the long-term survival of subjects with schizophrenia and a lifetime comorbid substance use disorders. Methods The charts of 277 consecutive subjects admitted in our center during a period from January 1, 2002 to February 1, 2007 were assessed. Psychiatric diagnoses have

Chronic kidney disease mortality trends in selected Central America countries, 1997-2013: clues to an epidemic of chronic interstitial nephritis of agricultural communities.

BACKGROUND: In Central America, chronic interstitial nephritis of agricultural communities (CINAC) has reached epidemic proportions. Clusters of cases have been described in several farming communities. Its aetiology remains uncertain and a controversy exists on its key triggers, among them the heat stress-dehydration mechanism and the toxic exposure to agrochemicals. METHODS: This study analysed the mortality pattern and trend of chronic kidney disease code N18 (CKD-N18) according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems-10th Revision, the proxy

Thiamine Prescribing and Wernicke's Encephalopathy Risk Factors in Patients With Alcohol Use Disorders at a Psychiatric Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is the leading cause of thiamine deficiency and can lead to Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE). WE has a higher prevalence of development in patients with AUD, and current recommendations emphasize parenteral administration of thiamine. Our objective was to characterize thiamine utilization in patients with AUD who were prescribed thiamine and evaluate if those who received oral thiamine had risk factors for the development of WE. METHODS: This retrospective chart review enrolled adults admitted to a psychiatric hospital from October 2014 through September 2

Genetic and environmental determinants of violence risk in psychotic disorders: a multivariate quantitative genetic study of 1.8 million Swedish twins and siblings.

Patients diagnosed with psychotic disorders (for example, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder) have elevated risks of committing violent acts, particularly if they are comorbid with substance misuse. Despite recent insights from quantitative and molecular genetic studies demonstrating considerable pleiotropy in the genetic architecture of these phenotypes, there is currently a lack of large-scale studies that have specifically examined the aetiological links between psychotic disorders and violence. Using a sample of all Swedish individuals born between 1958 and 1989 (n=3 332 101), we identifie
