Celiac disease in African American children with type 1 diabetes mellitus in inner city Brooklyn.

OBJECTIVE: There is a strong evidence for association between type 1 diabetes and Celiac Disease. Up to 8% of patients with type1 diabetes have characteristic features of CD on small intestinal biopsy. Type 1 diabetics who have HLA DQ2 or DQ8 are at risk for CD. However most of this data is from studies conducted in Europe, with mostly Caucasian population. This study aims to identify the prevalence of celiac disease in African American children with Type1 diabetes in inner city Brooklyn, New York. METHODS: IgA and IgG Antigliadin antibodies, IgA tissue transglutaminase and HLA typing was mea

Appraisal of gut lavage in the study of intestinal humoral immunity.

Direct investigation of intestinal humoral immunity requires collection of intestinal secretions or mucosal biopsy specimens, or both. A non-invasive technique of gut lavage, with a polyethyleneglycol electrolyte lavage solution as a means of collecting intestinal secretions for immunoglobulin and antibody studies, was evaluated. Fifty patients were studied--25 immunologically normal patients or volunteers, 15 patients with untreated coeliac disease, and 10 patients with active Crohn's disease. Protease inhibitors were added promptly to samples to prevent proteolysis of immunoglobulin content.

Coptisine ameliorates colitis in mice by modulating cPLA2/TRPM8/CGRP-1 signaling pathways and strengthening intestinal barrier function.

Coptisine (COP), a naturally occurring alkaloid, is recognized for its varied pharmacological impacts and its supportive function in intestinal well-being. However, the role of COP to protect the colonic epithelium in colitis has not been extensively investigated. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of COP in ameliorating colitis by investigating intestinal histopathology, mucosal barrier function, and transient receptor potential (TRP) signaling pathways in mice with colon disease compared to a control group, thereby elucidating the underlying mechanisms of its action. Neuroprotective Effect of a Multistrain Probiotic Mixture in SOD1G93A Mice by Reducing SOD1 Aggregation and Targeting the Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating neurodegenerative disease characterized by the selective loss of motor neurons. A bidirectional communication system known as the "microbiota-gut-brain" axis has a regulatory function in neurodegenerative disorders. The impact of probiotics on ALS through the "microbiota-gut-brain" axis remains uncertain. A longitudinal investigation was conducted to examine the alterations in the structure of the ileum and colon in mutant superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1G93A) transgenic mice models of ALS by using immunofluorescence and Western blotting. Subseq

The Influence of Alcohol Consumption on Intestinal Nutrient Absorption: A Comprehensive Review.

Chronic alcohol use has been attributed to the development of malnutrition. This is in part due to the inhibitory effect of ethanol on the absorption of vital nutrients, including glucose, amino acids, lipids, water, vitamins, and minerals within the small intestine. Recent advances in research, along with new cutting-edge technologies, have advanced our understanding of the mechanism of ethanol's effect on intestinal nutrient absorption at the brush border membrane (BBM) of the small intestine. However, further studies are needed to delineate how ethanol consumption could have an impact on al

Frontline Science: Abnormalities in the gut mucosa of non-obese diabetic mice precede the onset of type 1 diabetes.

Alterations in the composition of the intestinal microbiota have been associated with development of type 1 diabetes (T1D), but little is known about changes in intestinal homeostasis that contribute to disease pathogenesis. Here, we analyzed oral tolerance induction, components of the intestinal barrier, fecal microbiota, and immune cell phenotypes in non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice during disease progression compared to non-obese diabetes resistant (NOR) mice. NOD mice failed to develop oral tolerance and had defective protective/regulatory mechanisms in the intestinal mucosa, including decrea

Necrosis of the small intestine leading to a diagnosis of polyarteritis nodosa: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Polyarteritis nodosa is a disease that presents with necrotizing vasculitis in small and medium-sized arteries. It may occur in various organs, but approximately half of cases have gastrointestinal involvement. Prognosis is not favorable once organ dysfunction begins as evidenced by gastrointestinal symptoms; thus, treatment with steroids should be promptly initiated. We report the case of a patient who presented with necrosis of the small intestine, which was pathologically diagnosed as polyarteritis nodosa and treated successfully with steroids. CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old

The mesenteric lymph duct cannulated rat model: application to the assessment of intestinal lymphatic drug transport.

The intestinal lymphatic system plays key roles in fluid transport, lipid absorption and immune function. Lymph flows directly from the small intestine via a series of lymphatic vessels and nodes that converge at the superior mesenteric lymph duct. Cannulation of the mesenteric lymph duct thus enables the collection of mesenteric lymph flowing from the intestine. Mesenteric lymph consists of a cellular fraction of immune cells (99% lymphocytes), aqueous fraction (fluid, peptides and proteins such as cytokines and gut hormones) and lipoprotein fraction (lipids, lipophilic molecules and apo-prot

Celiac disease: diagnostic criteria in progress.

Until a few years ago, celiac disease (CD) was thought to be a rare food intolerance that was confined to childhood and characterized by severe malabsorption and flat intestinal mucosa. Currently, CD is regarded as an autoimmune disorder that is common in the general population (affecting 1 in 100 individuals), with possible onset at any age and with many possible presentations. The identification of CD is challenging because it can begin not only with diarrhea and weight loss but also with atypical gastrointestinal (constipation and recurrent abdominal pain) and extra-intestinal symptoms (ane

[Diagnosis of vesico-intestinal fistulas by contrast medium enhanced 3-D ultrasound].

AIM: Standard diagnostic tools for vesico-intestinal fistulas are cystoscopy, cystography, colonoscopy, and contrast enema. The aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of transrectal 3D-ultrasound with contrast media in these patients. METHOD: From 5/98 to 12/99 we examined 10 patients with symptoms of a vesico-intestinal fistula (pneumaturia, faecaluria). After placement of a transurethral catheter a transabdominal ultrasound examination (Kretz Combison 530) was performed with the bladder half full to evaluate the bladder wall. Then the bladder was filled with diluted ultrasound contra

Laparoscopy and robotic-assisted surgery for endometriosis: how intestinal and ovarian involvement impact operative time.

Surgical duration for endometriosis treatment varies based on the anatomical complexity of the disease and the surgical technique applied. However, the independent effects of each of these factors remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that intestinal involvement and the presence of endometrioma, whether isolated or combined, significantly increase operative time, regardless of the surgical technique. This study aimed to assess how endometriosis phenotype and surgical approach influence operative time. This retrospective observational study included 263 patients who underwent either convent

A submucosal variant of Whipple's disease.

We describe an unusual case of Whipple's disease, in a patient previously treated for tuberculosis, in which involvement of the small intestine was restricted to the submucosa. This is of diagnostic importance since the presence of Whipple's disease cannot be established by jejunal biopsy in such cases unless the submucosa is adequately sampled. It is possible that this unusual distribution of intestinal infection is related to the effects of e antibiotic therapy. Retrospective study of the patient's serum cholesterol, carotene, and albumin suggests that malabsorption may occur in Whipple's di

Myosin-9b Controls Epithelial Brush Border Architecture through Motility-Dependent RhoA Signaling.

UNLABELLED: Genetic variations in the MYO9B gene have been associated with Crohn's disease, celiac disease, and ulcerative colitis. These diseases have been characterized as primarily immune disorders. However, the overall molecular basis for the influence of Myo9b in these diseases remains poorly understood. Using in vivo small intestine ileum and human cell culture models, we identify a molecular function for Myo9b in the regulation of epithelial brush border microvilli. Using live-cell super-resolution microscopy, we characterize the motility of Myo9b as it moves toward enriched puncta at t

Large language models as versatile predictive engines for notifiable infectious diseases.

Accurate forecasting of infectious disease cases and deaths is crucial for public health decision-making. Traditional statistical and machine learning approaches may be challenged by complex temporal patterns and heterogeneous surveillance data. We evaluated large language models (LLMs) for infectious disease forecasting. We collected monthly reported cases and deaths data from China National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) from January 2009 to February 2025, and monthly reported cases from the United States NNDSS from 2016 to 2023, covering 79 notifiable infectious diseases an

Gut microbiota and sarcoidosis: a concise review.

Microbial involvement in sarcoidosis pathogenesis is suggested by the observation that histological findings in sarcoid granulomas are like those of leprosy, tuberculosis and parasitic infection. Some studies have shown that the lung microbiome in patients with sarcoidosis is different from healthy individuals. Results are conflicting, reporting an abundance or decrease in bacterial and fungal species. The altered composition of the microbiome in sarcoidosis can contribute to the formation of granulomas, typical lesions of the disease, through interactions with the host immune system. However,

Role of antibiotics for treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

Inflammatory bowel disease is thought to be caused by an aberrant immune response to gut bacteria in a genetically susceptible host. The gut microbiota plays an important role in the pathogenesis and complications of the two main inflammatory bowel diseases: Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis. Alterations in gut microbiota, and specifically reduced intestinal microbial diversity, have been found to be associated with chronic gut inflammation in these disorders. Specific bacterial pathogens, such as virulent Escherichia coli strains, Bacteroides spp, and Mycobacterium avium subspecies

[Approaches to developing a procedure for mapping water basin regions, by using the parasitological criteria].

The structure of a parasite system is formed and its functioning takes place in qualitatively different environments. The aquatic environment serves as a source of new elements and modules, energy, and information for parasite systems. And the parasite systems, for their part, affect the physical and biological parameters of the environment. Many intestinal infections caused by pathogenic microorganisms generally characterized by an acute disease course are related to a water factor. Such are typhus, typhoids, dysentery, cholera, salmonellosis, virus hepatitis, and others. Many parasitic disea
