BRCA1 haploinsufficiency impairs iron metabolism to promote chrysotile-induced mesothelioma via ferroptosis resistance.

Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is still a social burden associated with asbestos exposure. Local iron accumulation thereby represents the major pathogenesis, followed by oxidative DNA strand breaks and genomic alterations in the mesothelium. BRCA1 is a critical component of homologous recombination repair directed to DNA double-stranded breaks, whereas BRCA1 germline mutation is an established risk for breast/ovarian cancer, its role in MM development remains to be elucidated. Murine Brca1 mutant models so far have not reproduced human phenotypes. However, a rat Brca1 mutant model (Mut; L63X/+ )

Bis(benzimidazole)amino thio- and selenoether Iron(II) complexes as proton reduction electrocatalysts.

Two novel Iron (II) complexes featuring tetrapodal bis(benzimidazole)amino thio- and selenoether ligands (LS and LSe) were synthesized, characterized, and tested as electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction. The bromide complexes [Fe(LS,LSe)Br2] (1-2) are highly insoluble, but their DMSO solvates were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing an octahedral coordination environment that does not feature coordination of the chalcogen atoms. The corresponding triflate derivatives [Fe(LS,LSe)(MeCN)3]OTf2 (1c-2c) were employed for electrocatalytic proton reduction, wit

Iron-doped cross-linked lipoic acid nano-aggregates for ferroptosis-mediated cancer treatment.

Recently, Fenton reaction-mediated ferroptosis has attracted great attention in cancer treatment while the metabolism loss of iron and the limited endogenous H2O2 level imped its clinical application. Here, a new ferroptosis inducer (Fe@cLANAs) constructed only by Fe(II) and (R)-(+)-lipoic acid (LA) was developed for tumor ablation. After entering the tumor cells, the Fe@cLANAs dissociated into disdihydrolipoic acid (DHLA) and released iron, which would regenerate each other to continuously provide iron and H2O2 to enhance ferroptosis. The Fe@cLANAs demonstrated the IC50Fe below 10 μM against

Surface modified iron-oxide based engineered nanomaterials for hyperthermia therapy of cancer cells.

Magnetic hyperthermia is emerging as a promising alternative to the currently available cancer treatment modalities. Superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are extensively studied functional nanomaterials for biomedical applications, owing to their tunable physio-chemical properties and magnetic properties. Out of various ferrite classes, spinel and inverse-spinel ferrites are widely used but are affected by particle size distribution, particle shape, particle-particle interaction, geometry, and crystallinity. Notably, their heating ability makes them suitable candidates for heat-

Iron Sequestration by Galloyl-Silane Nano Coatings Inhibits Biofilm Formation of Sulfitobacter sp.

Microbially-induced corrosion is the acceleration of corrosion induced by bacterial biofilms. The bacteria in the biofilms oxidize metals on the surface, especially evident with iron, to drive metabolic activity and reduce inorganic species such as nitrates and sulfates. Coatings that prevent the formation of these corrosion-inducing biofilms significantly increase the service life of submerged materials and significantly decrease maintenance costs. One species in particular, a member of the Roseobacter clade, Sulfitobacter sp., has demonstrated iron-dependent biofilm formation in marine envir

The Controllable Synthesis of High-Quality Two-Dimensional Iron Sulfide with Specific Phases.

2D Fe-chalcogenides have drawn significant attention due to their unique structural phases and distinct properties in exploring magnetism and superconductivity. However, it remains a significant challenge to synthesize 2D Fe-chalcogenides with specific phases in a controllable manner since Fe-chalcogenides have multiple phases. Herein, a molecular sieve-assisted strategy is reported for synthesizing ultrathin 2D iron sulfide on substrates via the chemical vapor deposition method. Using a molecular sieve and tuning growth temperatures to control the partial pressures of precursor concentrations

Preparation, structural analysis and physicochemical properties of the Cordyceps cicadae exopolysaccharide iron complex.

In this study, EPS-Fe(III) complexes were synthesized, and their structural characteristics, thermal stability, antioxidant activity and digestive properties were evaluated. The content of iron in the EPS-Fe(III) complex was 6.34 ± 1.43 %. The absorbance bands of EPS and EPS-Fe(III) complexes were easily changed, indicating that iron ions can interact with the hydroxyl or carboxyl groups of EPS. Energy spectrometric analysis showed that a strong iron signal was observed in the EPS-Fe(III) complex. The IC50 values of the EPS-Fe(III) complex for DPPH, hydroxyl radical and ABTS were 1.52 mg/mL, 2

Iron oxide-EDTA nanoparticles for chelation-enhanced chemodynamic therapy and ion interference therapy.

As an emerging anti-tumor strategy, chemodynamic therapy (CDT) utilizes a Fenton/Fenton-like reaction to generate highly toxic hydroxyl radicals to kill tumor cells. However, the efficiency of CDT is still hindered by the low Fenton/Fenton-like reaction rate. Herein, we report the combination of ion interference therapy (IIT) and chemodynamic therapy (CDT) via an amorphous iron oxide (AIO) nanomedicine with encapsulated EDTA-2Na (EDTA). Iron ions and EDTA are released from the nanomedicine in acidic tumors and chelate to form iron ion-EDTA, which improves the efficiency of CDT and promotes the

Crystallization-based upcycling of iron oxyhydroxide for efficient arsenic capture in contaminated soils.

Arsenic (As)-contaminated soil inevitably exists in nature and has become a global challenge for a sustainable future. Current processes for As capture using natural and structurally engineered nanomaterials are neither scientifically nor economically viable. Here, we established a feasible strategy to enhance As-capture efficiency and ecosystem health by structurally reorganizing iron oxyhydroxide, a natural As stabilizer. We propose crystallization to reorganize FeOOH-acetate nanoplatelets (r-FAN), which is universal for either scalable chemical synthesis or reproduction from natural iron ox

Spatial variability of aerosol iron mineralogy and oxidation states over the Arctic Ocean.

The mineralogy and oxidation state of aerosol iron (Fe) play important roles in controlling aerosol Fe solubility and consequent bioavailability in seawater. In this study, the spatial variability of Fe mineralogy and oxidation states in aerosols collected during the US GEOTRACES Western Arctic cruise (GN01) were determined using synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. Both Fe(II) minerals (biotite, ilmenite) and Fe(III) minerals (ferrihydrite, hematite, Fe(III) phosphate) were found in these samples. However, aerosol Fe mineralogy and solubility observed d

Enhanced tetracycline abatement by peracetic acid activation with sulfidation of nanoscale zerovalent iron.

Iron-based heterogeneous catalysts due to the environmental friendliness have been widely studied for activation of peracetic acid (PAA) for abatement of organic contaminants in the water and wastewater treatment. However, the slow reduction from Fe(III) to Fe(II) of the iron-based catalysts as the rate-limiting step results in the low PAA activation efficiency. With regard to the excellent electron-donating capability of the reductive sulfur species, sulfidized nanoscale zerovalent iron is proposed for PAA activation (simplified as the S-nZVI/PAA process) and the tetracycline (TC) abatement e

Binding of Iron (II) Ions by Aqueous Extractions from Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis).

We studied the ability of an aqueous extract from yerba mate and a dry extract obtained on the basis of this aqueous extract to remove Fe(II) ions from an aqueous medium. Aqueous extracts from mate dose-dependently reduced the concentration of free Fe(II) ions assayed by the reaction with 1,10-phenanthroline. This can be attributed to polyphenolic compounds with iron-chelating properties present in aqueous extracts from mate, namely quercetin, rutin, caffeic and chlorogenic acids. These substances effectively removed Fe(II) ions from the medium (the initial concentration of these ions was 15 μ

Surface Functional Groups Affect Iron (Hydr)oxide Heterogeneous Nucleation: Implications for Membrane Scaling.

Because of its favorable thermodynamics and fast kinetics, heterogeneous solid nucleation on membranes triggers early-stage mineral scaling. Iron (hydr)oxide, a typical membrane scale, initially forms as nanoparticles that interact with surface functional groups on membranes, but these nanoscale phenomena are difficult to observe in real time. In this study, we utilized in situ grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering and ex situ atomic force microscopy to examine the heterogeneous nucleation of iron (hydr)oxide on surface functional groups commonly used in membranes, including hydroxyl

Solutions for an efficient arsenite oxidation and removal from groundwater containing ferrous iron.

Manganese (Mn) oxides are extensively used to oxidize As(III) present in ground, drinking, and waste waters to the less toxic and more easily removable As(V). The common presence of multiple other cations in natural waters, and more especially of redox-sensitive ones such as Fe2+, may however significantly hamper As(III) oxidation and its subsequent removal. The present work investigates experimentally the influence of Mn(III) chelating agents on As(III) oxidation process in such environmentally relevant complex systems. Specifically, the influence of sodium pyrophosphate (PP), an efficient Mn

Spiky Silver-Iron Oxide Nanohybrid for Effective Dual-Imaging and Synergistic Thermo-Chemotherapy.

Nanophotothermal therapy based on nanoparticles (NPs) that convert near-infrared (NIR) light to generate heat to selectively kill cancer cells has attracted immense interest due to its high efficacy and being free of ionizing radiation damage. Here, for the first time, we have designed a novel nanohybrid, silver-iron oxide NP (AgIONP), which was successfully tuned for strong absorbance at NIR wavelengths to be effective in photothermal treatment and dual-imaging strategy using MRI and photoacoustic imaging (PAI) in a cancer model in vivo and in vitro, respectively. We strategically combine the

Nickel-iron-driven heterogenous bio-electro-fenton process for the degradation of methylparaben.

Discharge of emerging contaminants such as parabens in natural water bodies is a grievous concern. Among parabens, methylparaben (MP) is most prevalent due to its extensive usage in personal care and food products and has been purported to trigger hormonal-related diseases. In this regard, the bio-electro-Fenton (BEF) process garners attention for remediating refractory compounds because of its ability to generate in situ hydroxyl radicals (•OH) utilising the energy harvested from electroactive microorganisms. In the present investigation, a Ni-Fe-driven heterogenous BEF system (BEF-MFC) was u

Iron(III)-based metalloradical catalysis for asymmetric cyclopropanation via a stepwise radical mechanism.

Metalloradical catalysis (MRC) exploits the metal-centred radicals present in open-shell metal complexes as one-electron catalysts for the generation of metal-stabilized organic radicals-key intermediates that control subsequent one-electron homolytic reactions. Cobalt(II) complexes of porphyrins, as stable 15e-metalloradicals with a well-defined low-spin d7 configuration, have dominated the ongoing development of MRC. Here, to broaden MRC beyond the use of Co(II)-based metalloradical catalysts, we describe systematic studies that establish the operation of Fe(III)-based MRC and demonstrate an

Iron Catalysis of C(sp3)-H Azidation Using a Heteroarene Radical Cation Strategy.

The FeIII(phen)3 catalysis of the benzylic C(sp3)-H azidation of indoles has been investigated. The Fe(III) complex can selectively oxidize indoles to form arene radical cations, which are transformed into benzylic C(sp3) radical intermediates. This strategy exhibits a difference in reactivity between N-heteroarenes and benzene, which is difficult to achieve via direct hydrogen abstraction approaches. Various biorelevant azide precursors were constructed, highlighting the utility of this mild first-row transition-metal catalyst system.
