Are myths surrounding long-acting reversible contraception the reason for a huge unmet need for spacing pregnancies?

BACKGROUND: Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC), a highly effective class of contraceptives, has a limited uptake by few couples due to lack of awareness, unavailability, and myths surrounding their application and side effects. AIMS: This study was undertaken to understand and to clear myths of LARC among patients as well as to assess the knowledge, attitudes, practices, and preference. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study using a semistructured questionnaire was conducted in the out-patient Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, in a tertiary level hospi

Physiological breech birth training: An evaluation of clinical practice changes after a one-day training program.

BACKGROUND: The "physiological breech birth" one-day training program is based on evidence about the physiology of breech births and how clinicians learn breech skills. Previous evaluations have demonstrated positive effects on confidence and knowledge, but the training's effect on clinical practice and outcomes is unknown. METHODS: A mixed-methods evaluation was conducted in eight National Health Service hospitals in England and Northern Ireland. Changes in confidence and knowledge were assessed using pretraining and post-training surveys. Mode of birth and maternal birth positions were eval

Biomechanical mechanisms of atypical femoral fracture.

Antiresorptives such as bisphosphonates (BP) and denosumab are commonly used osteoporosis treatments that are effective in preventing osteoporotic fractures by suppressing bone turnover. Although these treatments reduce fracture risk, their long-term use has been associated with atypical femoral fracture (AFF), a rare potential side effect. Despite its rare occurrence, AFF has had a disproportionately significant adverse impact on society due to its severe outcomes such as loss of function and delayed healing. These severe outcomes have led to the decrease in the use and prescription of osteop

Impact of a hidradenitis suppurativa patient decision aid on treatment decision making: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Patient decision aids are tools that facilitate shared decision making when clinical evidence and patient values and preferences inform the process. Evidence-based guidelines have been developed for clinicians in hidradenitis suppurativa management. To address treatment decision-making needs of hidradenitis suppurativa patients, we developed a hidradenitis suppurativa patient decision aid. OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of the hidradenitis suppurativa patient decision aid during treatment decision making. METHODS: An online, participant-blinded, parallel-group, randomized cont

Rate of progression from mild cognitive impairment to dementia in an essential tremor cohort: A prospective, longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Essential tremor (ET), among the most common neurological diseases, is associated with cognitive dysfunction. Yet, nearly all knowledge of ET-related cognitive impairment is static and cross-sectional (e.g., prevalence), with virtually no dynamic information (i.e., course and progression, conversion rates, and clinical outcomes). OBJECTIVES: To quantify the rate of progression from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to dementia in a cohort of elderly ET cases. METHODS: 167 ET cases, enrolled in a prospective, longitudinal, clinical-pathological study, underwent an extensive neuropsy

Preventing child sexual abuse: A systematic review of interventions and their efficacy in developing countries.

BACKGROUND: Research on prevalence, risk factors, and prevention interventions for child sexual abuse has continued to focus on western and developed countries. Where country-level prevalence data or large-scale research exists, rates of child sexual abuse are consistently higher in developing and non-western countries than their western and developed counterparts. OBJECTIVE: We systematically reviewed research on the nature of child sexual abuse interventions in developing countries, the settings and populations included to identify types of child sexual abuse prevention initiatives being im

Interpersonal communication campaign promoting knowledge, attitude, intention, and consumption of iron folic acid tablets and iron rich foods among pregnant Indonesian women.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Indonesia's community health delivery system offers services such as prenatal care and supplementation. Despite accessibility to these services, compliance with supplementation is low, and childhood stunting rates remain high. To address undernutrition, a National Nutrition Communication Campaign (NNCC) - using interpersonal communication (IPC) strategies - was implemented to promote consumption of iron-folic acid (IFA) supplements and iron-rich foods (ATIKA). The purpose of this study was to understand how participation in IPC activities influenced knowledge, attitu

Inferior parietal lobule and early visual areas support elicitation of individualized meanings during narrative listening.

INTRODUCTION: When listening to a narrative, the verbal expressions translate into meanings and flow of mental imagery. However, the same narrative can be heard quite differently based on differences in listeners' previous experiences and knowledge. We capitalized on such differences to disclose brain regions that support transformation of narrative into individualized propositional meanings and associated mental imagery by analyzing brain activity associated with behaviorally assessed individual meanings elicited by a narrative. METHODS: Sixteen right-handed female subjects were instructed t

Self-Justifications for Unsafe Sex Among Incarcerated Young Men Who Have Sex with Men and Are Living with HIV: Results from a New York City Jail-Based Pilot Intervention.

Young men who have sex with men (YMSM), especially African American and Latinx YMSM, accounted for the highest proportion of new HIV diagnoses in 2016. Minorities and persons living with HIV are over-represented in correctional settings. To influence risk behaviors of incarcerated YMSM who are living with HIV, New York City Health + Hospitals adapted, implemented, and evaluated an evidence-based intervention (EBI)-Personalized Cognitive Counseling-as a pilot program for YMSM, aged 20-29 in New York City jails from May 2015 to July 2016. Strengthening the Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) Surveillance Component of the Polio Eradication Initiative through Short Message Service (SMS) Reminders; Experience from Sokoto State, Nigeria 2014.

Eradication of poliomyelitis remains a public health priority due to the paralytic effects of the virus on children and impact on global health system. However, existing gaps in surveillance can hinder eradication. Improved timeliness of identification and reporting of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) cases with further confirmation of Wild Poliovirus (WPV) in stool samples, can help Nigeria achieve the performance indicators of non-polio AFP rate of ≥ 2/100,000 population aged < 15 years and ≥80% stool sample collection adequacy. To ascertain the awareness of AFP case definition and detection by

Knowledge of and Interest in the Copper Intrauterine Device Among Women Seeking Emergency Contraception.

OBJECTIVE: Emergency contraception (EC) includes hormonal pills (levonorgestrel or ulipristal acetate) and the copper IUD (Cu-IUD). The Cu-IUD is more effective for EC than hormonal pills but remains underused, possibly because of lack of knowledge or interest. The objective of this study was to examine knowledge of and interest in the Cu-IUD for EC among Canadian women seeking EC. METHODS: The study used a cross-sectional convenience survey of English-speaking women presenting for EC at two sexual health clinics in Toronto. The anonymous paper-based survey was completed in the waiting room.
